 What country, nation, state province, and region in which you teach taught, or attend a

school?

I am an Elementary School drama teacher in an International School in Beijing, China.

 How would you best characterize the learning environment at your school or in your
classroom?

Because this school is an IB school and accredited by WASC, the learning environment is
student-centered, IB-inquiry-based learning, and a cross-cultural environment. In my drama
classroom, the atmosphere is fun and relaxing. I encourage the students to express themselves
through speaking, playing, and acting. Students are delighted and excited about a drama
class.

 What are the needs, expectations, challenges?

Almost 100% of students at our school will apply for overseas universities. Therefore, school
is the place for students to grow their abilities to meet the academic standards, which is also
parents’ expectations. Besides that, because it is an IB school, all the graduates should meet
the attributes of the IB learner profile (n.d.). At the same time, the school locates in China;
parents also want their children to experience Chinese culture and have a global view and
international mindsets.
The biggest challenge of our school is to build up a multicultural school community. Because
all the people of our school community have very diverse cultural backgrounds, their
understandings of a school’s responsibilities are based on their experiences. Building up a
mutual understanding of a school’s culture and mission is very critical. For example, some
Chinese parents question there are too many activities at school and kids do not have enough
time to learn. But actually, students are learning from joining different activities. Hence,
teachers also have the responsibility to communicate and explain its reason. To help parents
understand IB and understand how we teach more, the Chief Principal of our school
organizes a weekly Parent Workshop every month. We also have our regular morning tea to
invite parents to communicate directly with the school and share their feedback and concerns.

 How do you define learning?

Learning is a process of acquiring knowledge, building up skills, and growing up into a

physically and psychologically healthy person.

 What factors seem to be the most influential to a student’s learning process?

I think whether the learning process is student-centered is the most influential factor to the
learning process. Because if the process is student-centered, schools and teachers should
show trust to students to explore themselves in their most interested and confident areas, the
learning process will be fun and positive. The student will become motivated and self-driven.
Then no matter which kind of obstacles they have to face in their learning, they will
proactively find out solutions and will feel achieved and more motivated in their future
learning and future life.
