CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Millions of dollars are spent every year for pump maintenance. According to one expert,
annual replacement and maintenance costs in the chemical industry average 50% of the
initial investment. One reason for these high costs is the lack of interchangeability of parts
within a given manufacturer's line of centrifugal pumps. This leads to difficult mainte-
nance, high parts inventories and often, extended periods of down time.
Worthington standard end suction centrifugal pumps are years ahead in interchangeability
because we have extended parts interchangeability to include a series of integrated models
in many different materials of construction.

Worthington SESC pumps have incorporated an optimum degree of standardization. 126 different liquid assemblies
are affixed to only four basic 'bearing frames. Frame 1 accepts .26 liquid assemblies; Frame.2 accepts 62 liquid
assemblies; Frame 3 adcepts.21 liquid assemblies and Frame 4 accepts 17 liquid assemblies.
Good engineering practice dictates that the shaft deflection measured at the face of the stuffing box should
not exceed .002 inches. Deflections beyond this limit will reduce packing and mechanical seal life:
All radial-load curves for volute-type casing design have similar shapes. Thus individual radial-load curves
have been averaged and grouped into the four curves shown on the radial load chart; the co-ordinates have been
expressed in percentages. Radial loads for a specific pump can be determined by knowing shut-off load and
capacity which is expressed as a percent of the best efficiency capacity.
Good engineering practice also dictates that both line and thrust bearings have 16,000 hours minimum rated life.
Minimum rated bearing life is the point at which 10% of bearings will statistically fail; average bearing life
is equal to 5 times minimum rated life. While radial loads mainly affect the pump line bearing, they also
effect thrust bearings. Therefore the thrust bearing life chart includes a reasonable value for radial loads
in addition to the thrust load from suction pressure.
Deflection limits of .002 inch and minimum rated bearing life of 16,000 hours are based on maximum impeller
diameter, specific gravity of 1.0 and shut-off head.
The shaft of a centrifugal pump, in addition to radial forces, must also transmit the torque from the driver to
the impeller. The rating curves 2004-8 list the maximum allowable bhp for specific rotative speeds. Since
torque times rpm is proportional to horsepower, shaft limitations can be calculated for other speeds.
LOAD
(a) Consult reference data chart and for specific pump involved note the frame size, radial load curve, shut-
off radial load and design rotative speed.
(b) Determine operating capacity ofthe selected pumpinpercentof best efficiency capacity. (Note thatpumps above
3 in. size are not expected to be operated at less than 45-50% of their best efficiency capacity point.)
(c) Determine the percent of the shut-off radial load from the radial load curve.
(d) Multiply the percent of the shut-off radial load by the shut-off radial load.
(e) When using cut-down impeller and/or operating at other than design rpm of pump, correct radial load by
multiplying by the 4th power of the ratio of cut-down to maximum impeller diameters and by multiplying by
the square of the ratio of operating to design rotative speed.
(f) Multiply radial load by specific gravity.
SHAFT DEFLECTION
Enter shaft deflection chart with resultant radial load and determine shaft deflection for specific frame size
pump (maximum acceptable deflection .002 inch at seal faces.)
LINE BEARING LIFE
)nter line bearing life chart with resultant radial load and pump frame size and determine line bearing life.
minimum acceptable life 16,000 hours).
THRUST BEARING LIFE
Enter thrust bearing life chart with resultant radial load and pump frame size and determine thrust bearing
life (minimum acceptable life 16,000 hours).
EXAMPLE:
Conditions of Service
98% H2SO4 Sp. Gr. = .1.98
300 gpm at 114 feet
Suction Pressure = 80 psi
(1) From the "Reference Data" chart find that the 3 CNG —52 is a Frame 2 pump with a design speed
of 3600 rpm. The radial load reference curve is C, and the radial load at shut—off is 147 pounds.
(2) The operating capacity as a percent of the best efficiency capacity is 121 „15
423 '
(3) From the radial load curve find that the radial load equals 385 of the shut—off radial load.
(4) The radial load, then, equals 147 X .38 = 56 lb.. This is, however, for maximum diameter
impeller and a gravity of 1.0.
(5) The C.0.S. requires only a 5i in. impeller whereas the maximum diameter is 5-5/8 in. The
gravity involved is 1.98 instead of 1.0.
(a) 5.500 ~ 5.625 = .98
(. 9 5) 4 = .924 = correction for diameter
(b) 1.98 = correction for gravity
Corrected Radial load = 56 X .924 X 1.98 = 102 lb.
Similarly, for the same pump at 1750 rpm with C.O.S. of H 2 SO 4 , Sp. Gr. 1.98. 153 gpm at 27 ft.,
suction pressure 80 psi, following values are obtained:
Note the tremendous increase in line bearing life and reduced deflection at seal face. This points
out the relationship between radial load and rotative speed. If rotative speed is reduced by one —
half, the radial load is reduced by three quarters, thus reducing shaft deflection and increasing
line bearing life. A reduction in rotative speed also increases line and thrust bearing life.

For example: a 4 CNG-I04 pump (frame 4), at 1150 rpm has a maximum allowable suction
pressure of 285 psig. At 1750 rpm, the maximum allowable suction pressure is 275
psig.
The sum of the suction pressure and differential pressure should never exceed the
maximum allowable working pressure of the pumps.
Using the maximum allowable suction pressure obtained . from, the chart based on bearing
life, a proper shaft sealing method must also be selected. The chart below indicates
the maximum allowable suction pressure for the most common methods of shaft sealing.

TYPE CNGO-DNGO
FOR CRYOGENIC SERVICE
Tests have proven that the standard horizontal Worthite pump can operate satisfactori—
ly on cryogenic services such as liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, etc. Worthite retains
its strength at temperatures well below those encountered on these services.
Worthite pumps operate smoothly even though the temperature is —300 0 to— 350 0 F. A
specially designed plastic heat dam separates the liquid assembly and the bearing
frame (or monobloc motor bell housing). With this, the bearing temperature is 115 F.
where normal temperature is only 150 0 to 1 60oF . Proper bearing lubrication is insured
through the use of a special grease.
An important consideration is that of NPSH. Since cryogenic liquids are usually han—
dled at their boiling point the available NPSH must come from the liquid level (static
head). Because of its low NPSH reou1rements the CNG (Dumps find a wide range of appli—
cation in this service.
Another important cons . deration is sealing the stuffing box area. A soft packing will
work for short durations but a special mechanical seal, specifically designed for
these services, gives outstanding performance.
The standard CNG/DNG elevations and rating curves may be used when applying these
units.

*NOTE: The standard Worthite CNG—DNG and CNGK—DNGK pumps with EA mechanical seal will cover most ap—
plications where a mechanical seal is desired. .The standard type EA seal is good for almost
all environments in which Worthite is acceptable. However, certain liquids attack the binder
used in the carbon mechanical seal bushings. When an EA seal is offered for such services a
Teflon mechanical seal bushing must be supplied at the extra charge shown on 2004-1 page 7.
Since the ceramic coated seal ring cannot be run against glass filled Teflon, a Worthite seal
ring with work—hardened Worthite insert will be furnished. Chemicals which attack the stand—
ard carbon bushing are:
Do not offer Teflon mechanical seal bushings where they are not required since they do not
resist wear as well as carbon.

Limitations
I. Pressure must not exceed 35 psig on an externally mounted seal, or 100 psig on an
internal-1y mounted seal.
2. Temperature of liquid being pumped must not exceed 300F unless a water—cooled
stuffing box is used. (Care must be taken not to recommend cooling when this
would cause crystallization, freezing, or solidifying of the liquid being pumped).
3. Do not offer these seals on liquids being pumped above their atmospheric boiling
point without referring to Ampere.
4. Do not use these seals on hydrocarbons with a specific gravity of 0.63 or less.
5. Do not use these seals where fine solids or crystals are present in the liquid
being pumped.
6. Do not apply these seals where the corrosion rate on the metal selected is greater
than 0.002 inches per year (1PY). If in doubt, consult Standard Pump Division,
Sales Department.
In addition these seals should not be used under the following conditions:
A. Fluorine compounds, or hydrofluosilicic acid.
B. Solutions containing the equivalent of (0% or more free caustic soda.
C. Nitric acid over 45% concentration.
D. Chromic acid over 25% concentration.
E. Oleum (100% or more sulfuric acid).
F. Hydrogen peroxide over 10% concentration
For solutions which will not corrode the metal selected at a rate greater than
0.002 IPY, but which are listed in one of the exceptions "8" through "F" above, a
Dura Seal can be supplied which is slightly modified from the standard, but which is
not carried in stock at Ampere. The variation in construction, and price difference
are listed below. (Shipment on pumps with these modified seals will be 6-8 weeks
where pump parts are available in 4 weeks or less; if more than 4 weeks are required
to obtain pump parts, add 2 weeks for seal installation and test).

The SESC line of pumps, with the exception of the CNG line, are all designed to use Crane type No.1 mechani-

The rotating "seal head" is factory assembled as a single unit. It consists of a flexible synthetic rubber
bellows, lapped sealing washer, retainer, driving band, and disc.
The rotating sealing washer mates with a stationary floating seat. Both faces are precision lapped to prevent
leakage and to eliminate break-in-runs.
Positive drive within the seal head is achieved by pre-loading the driving (left) end of the rubber bellows
against the shaft by means of a metal band so that it will rotate with the shaft. Drive is achieved by means of
projections on the metal driving band which engage slots in the retainer shell. This retainer shell in turn drives
the sealing washer by means of interlocking notches.
Spring pressure is transmitted to the sealing washer through the retainer, disc, and bellows flange. Accordion
action of the bellows allows the seal head and washer to move freely, so that constant contact with the seat face
is maintained at all times.
The floating seat is held by a synthetic rubber sealing ring, which eliminates stress distortion of the lapped
face during installation and operation.
Type 1 seals are satisfactory when handling liquids which will not affect the synthetic rubber bellows, or are
not corrosive to the metal parts. The limitations listed below are not to be exceeded.
1. These seals are suitable for a maximum pressure of 100 lb. providing
casing pressure permits.

Where the suction pressure exceeds the pressure limitation of Type 1 seals (100 psi), or where hydrocarbons with
specific gravity less than 0.65 are encountered, Type 1B seals may be applied. Type 1B seals are suitable for
pressures exceeding the maximum working pressures of SESC pumps. The temperature limitations are the same as
the Type 1_ seals. Type 1B seals are usually limited to type CNR-DNR pumps, however they may be applied to other
SESC pumps under special conditions. If such an application arises, refer to Standard Pump Sales with full operating
conditions.
The Type 1B seal is arranged for recirculation from the discharge volute through the seal gland. The recircula-
tion pii3ing is furnished by Worthington.
Type 1 BP-271 and BP-171 seals are carried in stock at Ampere. The materials of construction are shown below
for the various parts of these seals. Type 1B and Type 1 seals of different materials of construction are available;
however, they are not carried in stock.
Standard sleeve material will be bronze on all bronze and standard fitted pumps, and steel on all iron pumps.
11-13 chrome sleeves are available at an extra cost.
Below is a representative list of chemicals which can be handled by the seals mentioned. For liquids not
covered refer to Ampere with complete details as to C.O.S., temperature, specific gravity, suction pressure in psig,
vapor pressure and full identification of fluid.

(QUANTrTY)
centrifugal pumps, for service. Pumps are to be (*standard fitted) (*all iron) (*all
(TYPE)
bronze) construction and to be mounted on a cast iron or steel baseplate extending under pump and
(TYPE)
driver. Pumps are to be coupled to the driver by means of an approved type'flexible coupling.
OPERATING CONDITIONS
Each pump shall be'capable of delivering against feet total head.
(LIQUID)
Net positive suction head available to the top of the pum:7o uo fndation will be feet.
The characteristics of the liquid to be pumped are as follows:
Liquid handled
Temperature
Specific Gravity
Nature of solids Present
Percentage of solids by weight
Viscosity of Liquid at Pumping Temperature—
(Add any additional facts concerning the nature of the liquid which might effect pump construction or ap—
plication).
CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The construction features shall be:
(a) The casing and suction head of the pump shall be of (*cast iron) (*bronze) material. The casing and
suction head shall be equipped with (*In lb. flat faced flanges) — (*standard threadded connections)
for inlet and outlet connections.
(b) Impeller — The impeller shall be of the enclosed type and shall be of (*cast iron) (*bronze) material.
The impeller shall be statically balanced and hydraulically balanced by use of balance ports and rear
wearing ring joints. Impeller shall be keyed to the shaft and held in place by a self locking nut.
(c) shaft — The shaft shall be of steel. The shaft shall be one piece construction, incorporating a
separate shaft sleeve. The shaft shall be machined throughout and in addition ground on all surfaces
except the surface between the bearings. The shaft shall be of adequate size and design to prevent
excessive deflection. The maximum allowable end play'of the shaft shall be 0.001 in. The maximum
allowable run—out of the shaft with respect to the stuffing box shall be 0.002 in.
(d) Shaft sleeve shall be of (*steel) (*bronze) (*hardened chrome steel) material and shall be securely
keyed to the shaft. The surface of the sleeve shall be finished to 32 micro inches. A synthetic
rubber 'ow ring seal shall be provided at the impeller end of the sleeve to prevent leakage of the
fluid pumped under the sleeve.
The sleeve shall extend through and beyond the packing or mechanical seal gland.
(e) Stuffing box — The stuffing box shall be integral with the casing and shall incorporate an external
connection throur which sealing liquid may be provided to the seal cage within the packing. Pump
construction sha. 1 permit_conversion fram packed_stuffing box to mechanical-seal or visa—versa with—
out special machining.
(f) Mechanical seal — (If pump is to be supplied with mechanical seal give complete designation of mechani—
cal seal).
(g) Bearings — The shaft shall be supported by two anti—friction ball bearings located in the pump bearing
frame. The outboard bearing shall be a combination line and thrust bearing. Both bearings shall be
adequately protected from entrance of contaminating materials by use of lip type closures, and the
inboard bearing (closest to the stuffing box) shall also be protected by a slinger on the shaft, and
by an inert grease seal between the lip seal and the slinger. Bearings are to be sized for 2 year
minimum rated bearing life based on the maximum diameter impeller.
(h) Bearing lubrication — Bearings are to be ring oil lubricated, the oil beingcontained in a sump in—
tegral with the bearing frame. A constant level Trico or equal oil reservoir shall be provided to
allow visual inspection of oil level.
Standard fitted bare pumps should be ordered by Group Number only. For example,
an order for a ICN-22 standard fitted bare pump with maximum diameter impeller
would read: ONE (1) GROUP CH2A Pump.
A standard fitted belt driven pump should be ordered as: ONE (I) GROUP CH2A
Pump with Pulley.
A standard fitted motor driven pump should be ordered as: ONE II) GROUP CH2A
Pump with Lovejoy Coupling and Base for customer's 2HP 3600 RPM NEMA frame 204
Motor.
Any other variations such as all iron pump, all bronze pump, 13% chrome sleeve
or mechanical seal should be ordered by a full description, such as: ONE (I)
ICN-22 all iron pump with A impeller and base and Lovejoy coupling for custom—
er's 2HP, 3600 RPM NEMA frame 204 motor and with Crane BF 871 Mechanical seal.
(Note that by specifying the impeller from the rating curve, it is not necessary
to state conditions of service.)

With the four symbol group number for the CN and CNE pumps:
a) the first letter indicates the type of pump, i.e., C means CN and CNE
frame mounted pumps (CCNE uses double C and has five symbols)
b) the second letter indicates the size pumR (either CN or CNE), i.e.
1 means 2
2 means 22, 24 etc. Such as ICN-22.
3 means 32
4 means 42
5 means 52
6 means 62
7 means 72 or 74
8 means 82 or 84
. 0 means 104
d) the fourth letter indicates, the impeller diameter (and also whether CN
or CNE pumps when there are pumps of the same casing diameter in both
types.
EXAMPLE: Determine the Group Number for a riCN-62 standard fitted bare pump
with the-maximum diameter- impeller.
By referring to the above explanation, the first three symbols of the group
number will be CK6 which can be found on W-305 Page 1 column 15 or on W-305
,
Page 31, curve ER-I617 (in the upper left hand corner). From the curve ER-1617
or from the tabulation on W-305 Page 11, the impeller symbol "A" . signifies the
maximum diameter impeller. This makes the complete Group Number CK6A.
Because a liCNE-62 standard fitted bare pump has the same basic first three
symbols in its Group Number, the impeller symbol for the maximum diameter is
"K" as shown on W-305 Page 31, - curve ER-I618 or the tabulation on W-305 Page II.
This makes the complete Group Number CK6K.
