o Use parallel structure.*
o Use various types of phrases (noun, verb, adjectival, adverbial, participial,
prepositional, absolute) and clauses (independent, dependent; noun,
relative, adverbial) to convey specific meanings and add variety and
interest to writing or presentations.

L.9-10.2
 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization,
punctuation, and spelling when writing.
o Use a semicolon (and perhaps a conjunctive adverb) to link two or more
closely related independent clauses.
o Use a colon to introduce a list or quotation.
o Spell correctly.

 Identify the components of a complex sentence.
 Find errors in complex sentences.
 Write their own complex sentences and incorporate them into their argumentative
essays.
 Use ellipses correctly.
 Identify reliable sources.
Assessment

 Students will go through the information on their complex sentence worksheet.


 Students will correct example sentences provided in the worksheet.
 Students will provide their own example of a complex sentence.
 Students will provide their own example of ellipses on their gold sheet.
 Students will perform a CRAAP Test on an article.

Anticipatory Set

 Ellipses practice on gold sheets/Grading gold sheets. (8 minutes)


 Hand out compound sentence worksheet. (2 minutes)
 Go over the informational side of the worksheet. (5 minutes)

Teaching: Activities
 The first error example, we will do as a class. (5 minutes)
 Students will then correct the second complex sentence provided on the
worksheet. (5 minutes)
 In order to complete the worksheet, students will write their own compound
sentence. (5 minutes)
 CRAAP Test (15 minutes)
o Students will be given an article that can be found on the campus site.
o We will then go over how to do a CRAAP Test using the provided article.

Closure
 Students will be given information for next class.

 Pen/Pencil

 I can identify the different parts of a complex sentence.
