This report narrates the events that occurred more than two decades ago where
Venezuela and the world witnessed a series of landslides that destroyed part of the
coastal state and changed the lives of the people of Vargas due to a meteorological
phenomenon of torrential rains in the Vargas State. . These generated a catastrophe
with some 15,000 disappeared, 3,500 million dollars in losses, as well as the
destruction of more than 15,000 homes and some 75,000 victims. This event became
known as the Vargas tragedy.
How the events occurred.
On December 5, 1999, the Civil Defense issued the first alert in Vargas state
after the intense rains that were recorded for five consecutive days in the area and
then lasted 5 more days. By December 15, 911 millimeters of rain had fallen, this in
turn caused the flow of water to drop down slopes of more than 30 degrees, bringing
with it landslides, rocks, trees and the vegetal layer of the mountains, the streams of

landslides that killed hundreds of lives and homes.
70% of the population and 30% of the infrastructure of Vargas state were
affected by the natural disaster, which was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as

The state's waterfront was modified after sediment, mud, and rock slides.
Five hospitals and outpatient clinics were damaged, the black and white water
systems collapsed, the electricity and telephone services were deficient and the
activities of the port and the Maiquetía International Airport were suspended.
