The documents discuss concepts of carrying capacity and limiting factors in population ecology, using graphs to illustrate population changes over time in relation to environmental limits.

A population's growth will increase until it reaches the environmental limits of its carrying capacity, at which point resources become limited and the population will stabilize.

Biotic factors like predation and competition for resources as well as abiotic factors like climate and habitat availability can impact the carrying capacity by increasing or decreasing the number of individuals an ecosystem can support.

Carrying Capacity and Limiting Factors –Worksheet 1

1. Define carrying capacity:

2. In the graph below, the carrying capacity is rabbits.

rabbits

3. How many rabbits were in the population in:

4 years? 6 years? 7 years?

4. How many years did it take for the rabbits to reach their carrying capacity?

Explain how you decide on this.

5a) Define limiting factors

b) List as many biotic and abiotic factors that affect the carrying capacity of an ecosystem
(in other words limits the number of individuals in a population).

c) Organize your factors in the following arrows to show if they increase or decrease the
number of individuals an ecosystem can support. You may need to include words like increase,
or decrease. Some factors can go in both arrows

6. Predict how the carrying

capacity of the rabbit population would
change if there was a drought that
killed much of the grass that the
rabbits eat for food. Draw a line
showing where you think the new
carrying capacity will be.

Carrying Capacity - Worksheet 2

The shape of the population line tells us the story of what is happening to the number of
individuals over time. This graph can take the form of many shapes, each which tells us a story.
“Read” the line left to right and pretend that you are in a roller coaster. Are you going up or
down? If you are going up the population is increasing, if you are going down the population is
decreasing.

Most healthy populations oscillate around the carrying capacity line. In the graph below, the
rabbits overshoot their carrying capacity. At this point there was not enough food, more rabbits
die and fewer rabbits were born. The population then crashes (decreases rapidly). Eventually
more rabbits are born and the population goes up.

1. Draw a line representing the carrying capacity, and estimate the number of beetles
that would be found in a healthy ecosystem. beetles.

ECOLOGIST CONFERENCE – Worksheet 3

You are a park ecologist who has just received environmental monitoring data in the form of
graphs from your field technician. You now have to determine what is happening to the
populations of a number of species in your park.

Look at each of the following graphs and see if you can describe the story they are telling. What
is happening to the populations and carrying capacity for each? Confer with your fellow
ecologist and brainstorm to come up with reasons behind the story of the graph. Be ready to
share and defend your reasons with all the other ecologists in the park.
