1.1 Summary of Essential Concept

Embedded Multimedia

Multimedia is defined as the mixture of different content forms such as texts, music, photos or
images, interactive content, animations, or videos. Multimedia is also referred to as rich content
because of its abundance of variation in presenting information. It is able to stimulate the different
senses because you are able to see, hear, listen, and interact with it.
In particular, multimedia applications target the satisfaction of the audience. User Experience
is used to evaluate the effectiveness of a product to consumers. It is defined as the behavior shown
(either good or bad) by the person or individual that uses the application or product. It can be
evaluated by the emotions that an individual has while using the product.

BIG IDEA
Multimedia is a combination of different content forms such as videos, images, or texts, which
makes a website or offline application effective and attention grabbing.

Categories Of Multimedia
Multimedia can be categorized by the manner of interaction with the viewers or audience
toward it. These two categories are linear and nonlinear.
Linear – This is a multimedia type wherein the flow of the content is predetermined by the
creator the progression of the multimedia is straightforward, similar to video clip.
Nonlinear – This is a multimedia type that uses navigation components to provide the users
freedom to move around the application and seek the information they want. Normally, this type of
multimedia prioritizes interactivity with the audience.

Types of Multimedia
Multimedia can take different forms and manner of presentations.
 Multimedia Games and Simulations – Information is presented to the audience by imitating
a real-life information source into its digital environment equivalent. Then the users can freely
explore the environment to search for the information they need.
 Multimedia Presentation – The information is navigated in a sequence of slideshows and
uses an application player. Common types are video clips, audio clips, and audio-visual
slideshows.
 Multimedia Navigation – This type of multimedia uses different graphical elements and is
linked to different pages. Also, different Web elements such as buttons and text links are
incorporated. The page that users are directed to contains the information that they seek or can
direct them to other pages that may contain the information.

Applications of Embedded Multimedia


The efficiency in spreading information through embedded multimedia finds its way in different
fields of application. Common fields that use multimedia are presented here.

 Advertisement – Different forms of advertisement use multimedia formats. One of the newest
forms of advertisement is the one placed on public website. Companies pay web hosts in
exchange for placing ads of their products on the websites.

 Entertainment – This is considered as one of the most popular among multimedia applications.
Movies are now edited and incorporated with animations and special effects to enhance the
experience of the audience. Video games are one of the first applications of multimedia.
Similar to movie applications, videos games mimic real-life graphics and effects. Because of
this, video games have improved together with the development of multimedia.

 Education – Multimedia is now used as an unconventional method of teaching and learning.


Electronic books are of the highlights of multimedia in education. Graphics and images
included in electronic books can catch the interest and entice readers to continue reading.
Computer-based learning is another key use of multimedia in education.

 Industrial - Multimedia is corporate and industrial fields play a major role in different aspects
of the industry from management to sales. There are outsourcing companies that accept
multimedia projects from different companies. The most popular industry nowadays probably
is the creative industry, which depends greatly on the creation of multimedia for arts,
entertainment, and infographics.

Online Participation

Ever since web 2.0, websites have been enabled to accommodate and process information from
its viewers. This is the start of the interaction between users and online facilities to improve
user experience. After that, online communities were created. These are composed of several
groups of individuals that use the web for certain advocacy. Members usually contribute
content to publish on the website. This is the most common manner of online user
participation.

Video of Demand

Video on Demand (VOD) are systems that enable users to select video and audio content
when they want it. This system uses a database of videos and audio accessed on request by the
user. One example of this is podcasting. It is used to transmit or broadcast digital radio
programs over the internet. Another example is the voscast, which refers to the transmission of
video broadcast.
