SE 151A – DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE

FINAL EXAMINATION

Problem 1 of 2: 50 points total

8:00 am to 9:15 am. Submit to Gradescope before 9:25 am.

This exam is open-book.

The simply supported beam shown below carries its own weight, a uniformly distributed live load
of 300 lbs/ft, and a concentrated dead load PD at midspan. The cross-section of the beam is U-
shaped. It has two rows of reinforcing bars at the bottom. The bottom row has five #6 bars and the
top row has three #6 bars. Let f c =4,000 psi and f y = 60 ksi. The cross-sectional area of a #6 bar
is 0.44 in.2.

(a) State the difference between a tension-controlled beam and a compression-controlled beam
in terms of the strain in the reinforcement in precise and succinct sentences. Why does ACI
require that a beam has to be tension-controlled? (6 pts)
(b) For the beam section show in the figure, determine the minimum width b (rounded up an
integer value) which will result in a tension-controlled beam.(20 pts)
(c) For the beam width b determined in part (b), determine the maximum dead load PD that
can be carried by the beam. (14 pts)
(d) Consider the beam with the value of b determined in part (b). If the number of bars in the
top row is increased to five to have a total of ten #6 bars in the two rows, what is the
minimum amount of compression steel, As , required? The centroid of the compression
steel is to be at 2.5 in. from the top face of the beam. Show with calculations that the beam
is indeed tension controlled. (10 pts)
