for it, for no matter what direction you take regard in, it's
limitlessly varied. Like time - relative, and dependent on
whatever reference frames and points one would decide to look
at. Now, what is our stand on gender identities and their roles;
shall it be labeled, hierarchized, regarded only in a particular
VV
manner, or just, be it what they want and stand as? Should we be
compelled to just follow widely-held beliefs, or shall we follow
the echoes of our hearts yearning for true equality?
The song “Sirena” by Gloc-9 was about the struggle of gay
individuals in the Philippines. While it mostly follows the life of
a homosexual male, it could be applied to other sexualities that
EE
face the same taboo status due to the stereotypes placed on them.
The song starts with the chorus where the speaker displays their
firm belief of their sexuality with the first line “Ako ay isang
sirena” the word “sirena” being a slang term for a homosexual
male. The music video of the song depicts the lead as abused by
RR
other men around them; mostly their father, who was shown to
dunk their head to a drum filled with water. As implied with the
lines “Drum na may tubig ang sinisisid”
and “Naglalakihang mga braso, sa 'kin dumidikdik”. The
oppression that the speaker endured was noted to have been part
of their life. The speaker expressed their prominent femininity
SS
as they could play female-based games and were often using
makeup; which in one line indicated was to cover the bruises
sustained from their beatings. It could be inferred that the
beatings worsened and more around them started to dislike their
presence as the speaker went into adulthood within some cases
doubting their hereditary relationship with their parents. Later
II
on, their siblings moved out and they were left with their aging
father, who proclaimed in the end that he was remorseful for
1
how he treated his son and that he was braver than most. The
song ends with the chorus with its last lines “Kahit ano'ng gawin
nila, bandera ko'y 'di tutumba” indicating that the speaker fully
accepts themselves and is not influenced by the negative input of
TT
others.
Iba-iba man pananaw natin tungkol sa
The music video of "Sirena'', depicts the speaker's daily
SS
challenges as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. It can be
inferred from the lyrics that the character was abused,
discriminated against, and had an identity crisis at a young age.
However, they claim that they are no different than other
genders and that they stand for what they feel is right and
makes them happy and content. Homosexuals are just like
II
everyone else, that they deserve to be treated with the same
respect, and that they are just as important in our society as
2
each and every one of us. Homosexuality is not a disease and,
like other genders, they have a fundamental right to life and
pursue happiness.

kanyang kasarian.
EE
asexuals or whatever you name it, deserves respect just as us
heterosexuals.
nangangahulugang mali. Stereotyping and discrimination to
correct others based on own subjective interpretations and
RR
preconceptions would certainly be ethically inappropriate. How
would humanity even achieve true equality, if they are not
willing to start onto themselves? Reality is never subject to what
we believe, it is this: we are different, varied, and diversified,
that if we are, there would be no concrete basis for comparison.
Different limitlessly, just as the skies above us, wouldn’t it be so
SS
bad to endeavor as an open-minded society, - the bliss of
exploring so many differences without discrimination, rather
than the groundless competitions made subjectively.
Uniqueness is what of
II these differences,
3
worshiping gender
TT hierarchy is juvenile -
how about focusing on
the beauty of our
YY diversity?
