COMMUNICATING STUDENT PROGRESS

Upon completing the process of assessment and evaluation, it is imperative that

stakeholders particularly the parents, should be informed about the results of the process.
In this lesson, you are going to:
1. Determine how to effectively communicate the learner needs, progress and
achievement to key stakeholders.
2. Use of assessment data to enhance teaching and learning practices and programs

typical reaction of the student towards their
parents if they have not achieved the expected

intervention as it could hinder the child’s capacity
and willingness to improve.

Set an interview with a teacher on how they manage the distribution of report cards
and parent-teacher conference. Post an evidence of your interview and a short
transcript of you conversation.

TEACHER BACKGROUND: Teacher Maria Aurora Gorospe-Tatoy, 38 years old who graduated
Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in English and currently an elementary school
teacher teaching ESP and English was the interviewed teacher.

1. What are your memorable experiences on reporting pertinent information about
students’ progress to parents?
Answer: My memorable experience is that regarding sa mga progress ng bata is when I
heard the parents, saying that my children is improving. I’m so proud and happy when I
heard them (say that) “Teacher simula nung sinabihan mo yung anak ko nagsisimula na
siyang magbasa (study) sa sarili niya.” Sabi ko dun sa parent thank you mommy kase you
helped them na maimprove yung bata and so yun yung di ko malilimutan na experience
nung sinabi sa akin ng parents na nagbago yung anak niya dahil sa nanay natulungan ko
yung anak niya specially ngayong pandemic hindi namin nakikita (physically) yung mga
bata.

2. What challenges have you experience in communicating student progress to
parents?
Answer: Yung how to tell the parents na, that your daughter (child) needs to improve
in this matter. Paano mo sasabihin sa kanila in a way na hindi sila maooffend like yung
student, hindi siya ganun kadali magpick-up ng lesson. So I try first to say positive
ideas na kailangan dito po magbasa siya na parang binibigyan ko siya ng idea kung
paano icocope yung lesson na “Ah parang mahina yung anak ko dun kase sabi ni
teacher.” Bibigyan ko siya ng idea in a way na (delivered) positively. And then dun na
ako magbibigay ng suggestion na ganito po yung dapat na gawin ninyo para
maimpove po yung study habits ng bata.

Follow-up question: Are there instances that the parents complain with your feedback
on the students?
Answer: Ahh yung sa feedback, hindi naman kase inaaccept naman ng parents
kapag sinabi mo kase sa parents na yung anak niyo po medyo mahina sa ganito,
sinasabi nila na “Ahh ganun po ba teacher? Sige po sasabihan ko po yung bata”. So
tinatake nila yung feedback ni teacher tapos nag-aagree naman sila sa suggestion
namin na tulungan kami regarding sa improvement nung anak nila.

3. How do you manage the challenges or conflicts during parent-teacher conference?

Answer: Ayun, I, open-minded ako tsaka welcome ako sa mga suggestion ng parents
and lalo na if may mga complains sila regarding sa mga halimbawa sa mga
seatworks, quizzes so nirerespect ko ang hinihintay yung mga suggestions or yung
mga complains nila for example regarding sa giving ng quiz, sasabihin ng parent
“Teacher hindi po nakahabol yung anak ko sa quiz so ano pong gagawin ko?”. So
sinusuggest nila na may visual (aids), may powerpoitn sa pagququiz. Very
open-minded ako and then afterwards sasabihin ko po sa parent na “Oh sige po
mommy gagawin po natin iyan sa ikakabuti ng students” yon. So I respect the opinion
of the parent. Tas, sa regarding sa mga conflict, sa mga quizzes, pati sa mga student
and maging sa online class.

Statement: Yes and there are a lot of adjustment po because of the pandemic.
Answer: Yes, because nowadays mahirap kase I need to be focus kase kailangan
nilang may matutunan and see to it na may natututunan sila sa online approach.

1. Why is it important to communicate student progress to the parents?
It is important to communicate student progress to the parents because this
will enable them to have an idea on their child’s performance in school and could be
an initiative for their cooperation in helping develop the student’s performance in
school with the help of teacher’s feedback.
1. What principles should be followed in communicating student progress to parents?
Transparency and consideration is the primary principle in communicating
student progress to parents. Teachers must inflict transparency with their feedback
on student and also consideration on the parent’s feelings upon hearing the
feedback. Teacher must try elaborating positive feedback and suggestion before
opening the main concern of their child’s progress in school.

The article help me understand the importance of the role of assessment data as
feedback in teaching and learning practices and programs as it mainly contributes to the
improvement of the students’ school performance. This was in congruence with how it
was viewed by Darling-Hammond (2006) that assessment data had the goal of enabling
students to be a more effective and self-directed learners. Assessment data that are
well-executed also play an important influence in educational outcome and are an
essential component of long-term quality processes of improvement at the lesson,
course, and curriculum levels. As this was an attribute in current management and
learning tool that improves learning, it also states that effective management could
attain good results and that is one of the critical components of evaluation.

How did you communicate student progress to parents?
I have not yet experienced communicating student progress to parents but our
supervisor enables us to second-handedly have a glimpse of it as she shared her own
experience on the phenomena. She shared that in order for us to thoroughly understand
and fairly evaluate the student, we must make an effort to seek and get to know them.
There is this student who have not been able to take the short quiz for the reason that he
is ‘tired’. Our supervisor did not easily buy his excuse and told him that she wants to meet
his mother which he says is busy. She diligently seek for the mother who told her that he
is indeed tired from playing basketball in the afternoon. The statement of the student is
partly true and the teacher decided to give consideration as she had known him to be
responsible and this is his first time doing this. In the end, she agrees to permit him to
take the quiz but with deduction.

What principles did you observe?
The principle of consideration and proper approach to both the student and their
parent is observed. As it is an essential factor for us to get to know our students, we must
give consideration to them in anyway we can without being unfair to the other students
which is more prevalent because of our current setup in learning.. Our consideration
must always have a basis, we must still teach them a lesson so they would not repeat the
same mistakes next time. Next, being able to approach them and their parents without
being offensive. We must rely of feedback and suggestions to them in a polite and
approachable manner. One thing that I have learned is that feedback of student
progress to their parents is very important that it could serve as a determinant for their
future motivation in school. Our supervisor shared that students who seems to be a bit
slow in school tends to improve with parent involvement, which is in contrast to students
who do well in school but does not receive enough supervision from their parents or
guardians in school.

What else can you improve?
I can improve my way of communicating to parents and making an effort to get to
know my students better. Currently, I am familiar with their last names and their usual
performance in class but I know within myself that it is not enough for me to assume
that I am capable enough to evaluate them with the small information I know on them. I
will work hard to improve myself and be a better teacher for my students.
