Mathematics 5
Quarter 4 – Module 1
AREA OF A CIRCLE
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to Mathematics – Grade 5 Self-Learning Module (SLM).

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help you in guiding the
learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to Mathematics-Grade 5 Self-Learning Module (SLM).

This module, Mathematics 5 Quarter 4-Module 5 is written to further enhance
your critical thinking and develop the love of Mathematics. This acquired skill would
soon be applied in your everyday lives.

This module covers the concepts of Temperature. This topic is presented is such
a way that they are easy to understand and visualize.

The following are the special and unique features of this module:

➢ WHAT I NEED TO KNOW. This part presents the competency or the

objective that each learner should know and master.

➢ WHAT’S NEW. This part of the module presents the content input of the
topic that will be discussed.

➢ WHAT IS IT. This contains the discussions of the topic which include
illustrative examples of the lesson.

➢ WHAT’S MORE. In this part, the first activity will be given to each learner.

➢ WHAT I HAVE LEARNED. Another activity will be answered by the pupils.

➢ ASSESSMENT. This is the last part of each topic in which another activity
will be given and answered by the learners to assess if each of them learned and
mastered the skill.
“Learning Mathematics is fun. It is not as difficult as you think. We hope
this module can help you explore the world of mathematical concept in
relation to your everyday life.”

The Author

What I Need to
i Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to indulge
you in finding area of a circle. The scope of this module permits it to be used
in many different learning situations. You have learned from the previous
lesson that the distance around the circle is the circumference. Meanwhile, if
we want to know the space covered by the interior of the circle, we refer to it as
the area.

The most essential learning competency/ies aligned in this module is/are:

1. Visualize area of a circle. (M5ME-IVa-72)
Primarily, the scope of this module is to develop your skills and knowledge in
circles. While going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Find the area of a given circle(M5ME-IVa-74);
and
2. Solve routine and non-routine problems involving the area of a
circle.(M5ME-IVB-75)

Lesson

1 Area of a Circle

WHAT’S IN

When you were in grade 4, you have learned about the concepts
related to circles, its circumference and its radius. The
knowledge and skills you acquired are very important to understand how to
find the area of a circle. Hence, let us review all about circles, and also the
terms we need to know like radius, diameter, pi(π) and others.

DEFINITION

that are the same distance from its center. The area of a circle is the region enclosed by the circle. The

meter. The value of pi(π) is approximately 3.14159265358979323846…. but usually rounding to

Example #1. What is the area of a circle with radius of 3m??

r=3

Area= π r2
3
 = π × 32
 = 3.14159... × (3 × 3)
 = 28.27 m2 (to 2 decimal places)
Example #2:

What is the area of a circle whose diameter is 14 meters?

Since the given is the diameter, divide 14
by 2 to get the radius. So, A= 3.14 x (7)2
=3.14 x 49
=153.86 meters

What’s New

At this point of the module, you are about to learn the Area of a Circles. To
understand better how to find the area of a circle, you will have to perform the
simple activity below.

Were you able to complete the task? If yes, you may proceed to the next page.
If no, take time to finish for you to better understand the next discussions.

Activity #1: Calculate the area, given each radius. Use 3.14 as the value of π.
a. 25 mm f. 12.5 cm
b. 3.5 m g. 7.5 ft
c. 12 m h.15 yards
d. 10 cm i. 16 ft
e. 9 mm j. 20 in

What Is It

How did you find activity # 1? Have you given an idea on how to find the area
of a circle? Let’s answer some of these problems involving area of circles.
