Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1Background History

A creeper is a low-profile tool used to help a person more easily slide in and out of
confined spaces, such as the underside of a car, for performing inspection or
maintenance. Other names for such devices include car creeper, garage creeper and
mechanic creeper. They are built with a low profile to reduce the amount of added
height above the ground, thereby providing as much clearance as possible for the
person lying on it.

This project examined the potential use of a modifiable type of equipment that could be adjusted
to become a creeper pad and a creeper seat. It was also designed to be more comfortable in a way
that supported body posture. This enabled car mechanics to position themselves in the most
efficient, comfortable and least harmful manner when they had to lie down under the car to do
maintenance and repairing work. The makeshift pad or the conventional car creeper did not
properly support human body and they did not cater to the comfortable and safe posture that car
mechanics needed to be at. Consequently, car mechanics tended to suffer muscle pain, body
aches and fatigue. Thus, this modified creeper pad was invented to overcome this issue by
cushioning their body against hard surface while supporting their postures and body during the
process.
1.2 Basic component of creeper

Fig. 1

A basic car creeper consists of a steel or aluminum frame, a metal or cushioned surface on which
the mechanic lies, and a set of wheels to make it easy for the mechanic to maneuver. Car creeper
cushions are usually covered in vinyl, which makes it easy to clean up spilled oil or other car-
related grime. Car creepers often have cushioned headrests

1.3 Objective of The Project

This project sought to determine whether this equipment could assist car mechanics or students
to perform repair and maintenance duties by providing them support structure that fulfilled the
following functions:

1. Enable car mechanics to lie down or sit in appropriate and comfortable positions.
2. Reduce the risk of back pain, muscle soreness and fatigue as a result of bad body posture
3. Allow car mechanics to fully use their arms during repair duties since they previously
used one of their arms to support their positions.

We put forward the objective in to two:

1. General objective
2. Specific objective

1.4.1 General objective

The objective of this project is to design mechanic creeper that has a capacity to carry load of
620N and with minimum ground clearance of 2.5cm to facilitate work underneath a vehicle. That
combines functionality and comfort enough to support prolonged tasks while boosting
maneuverability.
1.4.2 Specific objective
Specifically, we would like to design and analyze each and individual component of mechanic
creeper:

 To design the car creeper frame.

 To select material and design the car creeper castors.

 To select material and design the padded back bench and padded headrest.
 To design a a creeper ram(stand).
 Check for safety in our design.
 To design assembly and part drawings using solid works.
 To calculate the stress analysis.
 To construct bill of material

IDENTIFYING CUSTOMER NEED
Identifying customer needs is an integral part of the concept development phase of the product
development process. The resulting customer needs are used to guide the team in establishing
product specification, generating product concepts, and selection a product concept for further
development.
The key benefit of this method is that the product is focused on customer needs and that no
critical customer need is forgotten.
These are some of the potential customers need for the mechanic creeper:
1. I need the creeper to be comfortable .
2. I want it to Enhanced Mobility & Flexibility.
3. I want it to have a good clearance
4. I need it to hold high enough maximum weight capacity to support the user
5. I want to work on any weather.
6. I hate every moment when I work on creeper it hurt my back
7. It is not easy to maneuver.
8. I need it to be made from high-quality materials.
9. I need it to last long.

• The corresponding interpreted customer need of the mechanic creeper is the following

1. The creeper is comfortable

2. The creeper have boosting flexibility and flexibility
3. The creeper have the smallest possible good ground clearance
4. It has the highest possible weight capacity
5. The creeper operates normally on any weather.
6. It Reduce the risk of back pain.
7. The creeper is easy to maneuver
8. It Build quality
9. It works for long period.

2.1 Who Is Our Customer?

The customer of mechanic creeper is every person who have a car. But companies will be
our big customer because most companies have both garage and in light vehicle assembly shop
the operators or workers access the underneath of the vehicle by lying on their backs, kneeling,
bending, and crawling on the floor using only piece of sheet or cartoons, etc during repairs and
maintenance which substantially induces strain. So for the sake of health and safety of their
employee they will buy our product.
2.2 Gathering Customer Information

After seeing and assessing our customers (the mechanic who works in the garage)
responses, we have got some useful information. Its summarized as follows: -

The mechanic told us that he use cartoons as a creeper or with out using any thing to lay
on and this doesn’t keep him out off from the cold and the dirty ground . Also that it isn’t
maneuverable , neither very comfortable nor good for health . He have to crawl his way under a
vehicle’s belly every time he needed to access it and this task would require his hands to power
his movement which means he can’t get under a vehicle while holding on to some tools. And the
other thing he told as was that it sore his back after resting on hard surface with time and
repetitive movements he will more than likely begin to suffer the effects that lead to
musculoskeletal disorders and overexertion leading to potential injuries that could result in
required therapy, surgery and with enough time possibly disability.

The mechanic told as that there are ways to solve these matters like commercial garages or
repair shops usually use hydraulic lifts to hoist the car into the air, facilitating any work that
needs to be done from the underside; similarly, oil-and-lube shops typically have a pit, a
basement level of the shop from which the technician can access the underside of the car via an
opening in the floor. For the do-it-yourself mechanic, hoists or pits are generally too expensive to
install in a residential garage; the alternative is jacking a car with a two- or three-ton floor jack
and setting up jack stands underneath the car.

So we believe that if we can proved comfort able ,long lasting ,strong and affordable creeper
we can solve the mechanic and many people problem and we Will also have many customers
who will purchase our product.

2.2.1 Information to Be Gathered .

The information to be Gathered are about portability ,ground clearance , weight capacity,
comfort and safety of our mechanic creeper design .

2.2.2 Respondent Identification and Questionnaire Design

The two tables revealed the findings obtained from the two data collection methods. Table 1
illustrated the results of the testing checklist and Table 2 presented students’ reviews which
derived from the questionnaire.

It could be confirmed from the tests that were conducted on this equipment that every
component was in reliable condition and it functioned properly. There were few setbacks that
the subjects experienced during the tests but these had been addressed. The final results of
the tests for every component showed that they were all fully functional.
Table 2 showed the results from the questionnaires. The instrument contained five items and
the 20 respondents were expected to rate their level of approval that ranged from one to five:
1 (strongly disagree), 2 (disagree), 3 (neutral), 4 (agree) and finally, 5 (strongly agree).

The results from the questionnaires revealed that majority of the respondents expressed their
approval on the functions and features of the equipment and this indicated the plausibility of
this equipment to be utilized at car workshops or vocational institutions. Although there was
some doubt on the safety and readiness of the equipment to be used as a part of automobile
maintenance apparatuses, these limitations could still be improved

2.6 The Final Reflection of The Results and The Process

It could be deduced from the findings that this modifiable creeper pad might assist car mechanics
and any people who have a car at vocational institutions to perform car repairing jobs in the a
more comfortable and healthier posture and position. This could increase the productivity of car
mechanics while reducing the risks of suffering physical pain. The main feature of this
equipment that could be folded and unfolded to either become a creeper pad or a creeper seat
could be considered one of its unique features. Hence, there was a possibility for this equipment
to be commercialized and used across automobile workshops and vocational institutions in order
to offer a safer and comfortable creeper for the car mechanics to perform certain tasks.

CHAPTER FOUR
CONCEPT GENERATION
4.1 Clarify the Problem
Clarifying the problem consists of developing a general understanding and then breaking the
problem down into sub problems if necessary.
In most automotive industry it has been observed that in both garage and in light vehicle
assembly shop the operators or workers access the underneath of the vehicle by lying on their
backs, kneeling, bending, and crawling on the floor using only piece of sheet or cartoons, etc
during repairs and maintenance which substantially induces strain. As a result Car mechanics
often suffered back pain and muscle soreness as a result of improper body posture while
repairing and maintaining cars.
Car mechanics regularly suffered back pain and muscle soreness as a result of improper body
posture and lack of equipment that could support their body weight and position while repairing
cars. Their tendency to simply slide their body under the car without any physical support posed
greater risk to their health and made them prone to injuries and pain. They also often bent their
bodies for a longer duration or squatted next to their cars when they were doing maintenance
duties on the interior parts of the car. Consequently, car mechanics tended to suffer muscle pain,
body aches and fatigue.
As stated before, the challenge was to “design a comfortable wheel driven mechanic creeper.”
The scope of the design problem could have been defined more generally (e.g., “load carrying
capacity”) or more specifically (e.g., “improve the max load carrying capacity of the creeper”).
Some of the assumptions in the team’s mission statement were:
 The creeper can move on rough surface
 The creeper carry loads up to 95kg
 The creeper very comfortable for human body
Based on the assumptions, the team had identified the customer needs for the mechanic creeper.
These included:
 The creeper is comfortable
 The creeper have boosting flexibility and flexibility
 The creeper have the smallest possible good ground clearance
 It has the highest possible weight capacity
 The creeper operates normally on any weather.
 It Reduce the risk of back pain.
 The creeper is easy to maneuver
 It Build quality
 It works for long period
The team gathered supplemental information to clarify and quantify the needs, such as the
approximate energy and speed of the creeper. These basic needs were subsequently translated
into target product specifications.

4.2 Search Externally

Is gather information from lead users, experts, patents, published literature, and related products

 Existing patents

Upon conducting a patent search for products similar to our proposed design, many patents for various
creepers with typical “shopping cart” wheels, metal frames, and head rests were found, though none of
these patents utilized a compromise between a normal creeper and a foldable ram like our proposed
design does.
Nonetheless, the patent search proved to be useful to find certain functional features in other automotive
creepers that would be useful to incorporate into our own design.
1. Inventor: Ben Brooks,
Patent
When looking through patents of different creepers patent US 4,895380 adjustable variable slop
elevating creeper was a good one to consider for our potential solution for a new creeper.  This
patent entailed” An improved adjustable variable slope elevating creeper including a mobile
horizontal frame, a platform for supporting a reclining person, and a device for lifting one or
both ends of the platform by a control operable by the reclining person.” Two features of this
design that stand out are the frame support which runs underneath the upper portion of the
support surface and the adjustable head rest. Therefore, they will need to be considered in our
design and implemented based on the material used.

Patent
Multipurpose adjustable mechanic support and creeper assembly US 6824149B1 .A multi-
purpose adjustable mechanic support and creeper assembly provides an adjustable device that
can be used to support the body while working with variously sized vehicles, compactly stored,
and converted into a mechanic’s creeper. The device includes a base frame and a pair of support
assemblies each having a support member. A height a adjustable tool support, expandable leg
portions to broaden the base frame, and storage areas are also provided. The support members
are removable and securable to each other to form a creeper or a seat. Adapting this concept of
adjustable head rest to our creeper design could be worthwhile if it is determined that there is an
excessive amount of unwanted movement in the prototype design.

Patent
Lock Wheel Mechanic's Creeper - US 2879865 A - This creeper allows the operator to lock the
wheel to prevent the creeper from moving. Operator would be able to use the control stick locate
at the sides of the plate to trigger the brake. There are total of four breaks, each of them is attach
to the four wheels. One of the disadvantages about this model is that the plate does not make a
good use of ergonomics. The plate is completely flat and would be uncomfortable to lie on. From
this we can see that there is a need to lock the creeper in place. Our design will have a similar
feature in place – one that is controlled through the manual handling of the mechanic. The
primary goal of our design is to eliminate frustration. We can use the failures of this patent,
along with its strengths, to bolster the overall effectiveness of our final prototype.
4.2.1 Mechanic creeper product at the present market
Before standard creepers were designed and manufactured mechanics use carpets and packaging
cartons to work under cars and other vehicle while it’s on jack stand.
The first mechanics creeper was introduced having one solid bench and wheels to on the frame to
move the creeper in and out under the car while the mechanic is laying over it.

Fig 4.3The first mechanics creeper

Then the bench is modified to two parts namely back bench and padded headrest to give comfort
for the mechanic and avoid neck hurt.

Fig 4.4 Modified Bench with Padded Head Rest

In the last decade more advanced mechanics creepers are introduced having a better mobility and
comfort having four wheel steering and a back bench design on the shape of the person body
Fig 4.5 advanced mechanic creepers

4.3 Internal Search

In internally developed concept the use of team knowledge to find the solution in general
problem and sub problem listed from the above. The team has discussed and have come across
the concept of inserting a fold able ram and the creeper can be adjusted to become a seat as
potential concepts. These concepts are illustrated below:
1. Fold able ram: the fold able ram concept is developed to eliminate the use of the buckets.
Thus this fold able ram can be used instead by the worker or mechanic to stand and do inspection
on the upper portion areas of the vehicle i.e. area under the hood and the ram can be folded back
in to the creeper to be used in as a normal creeper.
2. Fold able seat ( bench): this concept provides a transformable mechanic’s creeper which is
transformable between a mechanic’s creeper and seat which provides support to the worker in an
upright position.
4.3.1 Design Meeting Agendas
Meeting agenda helps you and your colleages prepare for a meeting and guide yourselves
through the items you need to discuss.
 Introduction part: goals and agenda of the meeting.
 Introductions of team members: name , organization , area of expertise or skill(s) they
bring to the team
 Presentation of the performance data :- brief project review
-list of gaps, prioritized in
importance and like hood of closure.
-early theories about interventions to close gaps.
 Gap by gap analysis : -brainstorming for possible interventions
-analysis of interventions on the list
-selection of best intervention

 Formation of teams to work individual interventions

 Assignments to small teams – agreements to deadlines
 Next large group meeting date/time
Our work on creeper design focused on solving problems for our end users. We set out to
develop an intuitive product to solve multiple challenges faced by both professional and
backyard mechanics.
In our team meeting we explored many different ideas around articulation and tool storage. with
a stack of sketches to pick through we started combining and expanding on concepts we felt
showed promise and were in line with our vision.
Using a mechanic’s creeper to access a vehicle’s underbelly eliminates strain inducing postures
such as kneeling, bending and crawling during repairs and maintenance. We also discus to work
our design basically to satisfy our customer needs.
4.3.2 Explore Systematically
The solution gained from externally and internally search is fragmented. The aim of systematic
exploration is to navigating the space of possibilities by organizing and synthesizing these fragmented
solutions. Concept classification tree is used to divide the space of possible solution into several distinct
classes that will facilitate comparison and pruning. In this design there are three main consideration in
designing of the creeper these are:
1. Consideration for comfort of the creeper:

Padded material

Comfort

Lock adjustable
headrest

Fig4. 6 Consideration for comfort

 Padded material: padded material provides comfort when the mechanic is lying on his back.

 Lock adjustable headrest: the lock adjustable headrest allows the mechanic to adjust the creeper in
elevated position also providing comfort.

2. Consideration of the mobility of the creeper.

Lock wheel

Mobility

Light weight
structure

Fig4. 7 consideration for mobility

 Lock wheel: swivel type wheel which can freely rotate 360 thus providing mobility in any direction and
lock on the wheel prevent the creeper from moving

 Light weight structure: light weight makes it easy to maneuverer and transports it from place to place.
3. Consideration of slippage of the ram

High coefficient
of friction
materials

To prevent
Lock
slippage

Rigid structure

Fig4. 8consideration to slippage of the ram

 High coefficient of friction material: the coefficient of friction between the foot of the ram and
the floor must be greater than the calculated coefficients of friction so as to withstand slippage of
the ram in upward leaning position.
 Lock: the locking mechanism enables it to stand in stationary position.

 Rigid structure: rigid structure with no compromise with the creeper which can stand in
upright position.

4.4 Reflect on the Solutions & the Process

The team is confident that the solution space has been fully explored. The idea of each individual
member in the team is accepted and then combined and integrated in one solution of the team.
Concepts that are dropped are:

 The rigid structure to prevent slippage.

CHAPTER FIVE
CONCEPT SELECTION
In the above process first identification of need is done and then alternative solutions concepts
are generated for those needs. In concept selection evaluating of the concepts with respect to
needs, economical, ergonomically and also the relative strengths and weaknesses of the concept
and then selection of the final design concept is carried. There are two stages of concept
selection process
 Concept screening and Concept scoring. For both concept screening and concept scoring
matrices are used for evaluating the concept relative the reference. For screening and
scoring matrices there are six steps to follow these are:
1. Prepare the selection matrix.
2. Rate the concept.
3. Rank the concept.
4. Combine and improve the concepts.
5. Select one or more concepts.
6. Reflect on the results and the process.
For the concept selection process of this design both methods are applied

Concept Screening
Screening is a quick, approximate evaluation aimed at producing a few viable
alternatives. During concept screening, rough initial concepts are evaluated relative to a common
reference concept using the screening matrix. At this preliminary stage, detailed quantitative
comparisons are difficult to obtain and may be misleading, so a coarse comparative rating system
is used.

Preparation of Selection Matrix

Selection criteria and concepts are used to provide the basic rows and columns of matrix.
Concepts should be presented at similar levels of detail for meaningful comparison and unbiased
selection. These criteria are usually expressed at a fairly high level of abstraction and typically
include 5 to 10 dimensions such as “low manufacturing cost”. These equally weighted
dimensions are chosen in part in order to differentiate between concepts. In general preparation
of selection matrix :
 Determine what product attributes are important.
 Rank these attributes, distributing one hundred points among them.

Concept Scoring
Concept scoring aim is on increasing the resolutions with a better differentiate among
competitive concept. In concept scoring the relative important of the selection criteria is
weighted and the focus on more refined comparisons with respect to each criterion. In the first
step a matrix is created and the entering of concept and criteria in the matrix. After adding
weight to the matrix for each criterion allocating of the weight 100 points among them. The
value 1-5 is used to rating the concepts to compare them with the reference concept.
Rating Relative performance
1 Much worse than reference
2 Worse than reference
3 Same as reference
4 Better then reference
5 Much better than reference
After entering the rate of each concept, calculating of the weight scores by multiplying
raw scores by the criteria weights also calculating the total score for each concept by the sum of
the weighted score of each concept.

The Concepts that are considered while designing of this creeper:

 Adjustable headrest: to allow working in elevated position.
 Tool storage: provides a place to store tools and small components near the user‟s
legs.
 Fold able ram: that can be adjusted to be used as stand or ladder.
 Fold able bench: to be used as bench in upright position.
The concepts are rated and evaluated with respect to the criteria and each concept will be
ranked then the concepts that have high ranking will be used in this design and the concepts that
have low ranking are dropped, non the less the concepts that have low ranking but that have good
feature and that provides a better performance to design will be considered to be combined with
other concepts and they will considered in the design.

Reflection of Information
The Final stage of the process, the team decides to elect concepts and combine them with each
other Approved concepts:
 Adjustable headrest.
 Tool storage system.
 Fold able ram.
Concepts that would benefit this product if they are combined are:
 Fold able ram with adjustable headrest and with the tool storage system.
 The dropped concepts:
 Fold able seat.

Therefore the design will be able to combine functionality and comfort enough to support
prolonged tasks while boosting maneuverability.
 Taking into consideration the above concepts the creeper will be light weighted
structure with padded surface that has an adjustable head rest system and that
applies lock wheel mechanism. In addition to this the creeper will also have
Foldable ram with high coefficient of friction material to resist slippage while
working. The next process in this design will be selection of material that can
satisfy the concepts.
