Product Overview

Model MSX Modular

Supply Unit
The Greenheck model MSX is an ideal make-up
air unit where gas-fired heating is not desired or
available. Coil heating and/or cooling tempering
options are available with airflow volumes up
to 48,000 cfm. The MSX may also be used for
untempered applications.
A flexible design concept enables each product
to be customized for its application. Units are
factory-assembled and wired to minimize field
installation labor. The result is a semi-custom
product at an attractive cost.

Heating Options supply fan and end discharge.

Hot water, steam and electric heat options are available. The heating section consists of a factory-installed
heating coil in a pre-engineered housing. Water and steam coil connections are stubbed through the wall
for installation convenience. The heating coil section is installed upstream of the fan section for a draw-thru
arrangement and provides a streamlined transition to adjacent sections.
For proper coil sizing, use Greenheck’s CAPS selection software or contact your local representative.

40,000 cfm.

Cooling Coils
Both chilled water and direct expansion coils for split systems are available. The cooling section includes the
cooling coil, double-pitched stainless steel drain pan sloped in opposite directions for positive draining, and
insulated double-wall construction. Drain and coil connections are stubbed
through the wall for convenience.
Chilled Water Coils: Available from two to six rows and numerous circuiting
configurations to meet various load conditions. Airflow ranges up to
11,700 cfm in both water and glycol applications. Coil performance shall be
calculated in accordance with AHRI 410.

Direct Expansion (DX) Coils: DX coils for use in split systems are available
from two to six rows. Circuiting options include single, face-split, and
interlaced arrangements.
All heating and cooling coils can be coated with an
ElectroFin® coil coating upon request!

Packaged Direct Expansion (PDX)

Providing unconditioned make-up air through ceiling diffusers or perforated kitchen hood plenums can create
an uncomfortable work environment during summer months in commercial kitchens. Although conditioned
make-up air can increase comfort levels, the need to cool and dehumidify this air to a 55°F supply air
temperature can be detrimental to the food preparation process, significantly increase equipment first cost, and
annual energy cost.
The packaged DX cooling option is designed to cool the kitchen make-up air to a 70-75°F supply air condition
to improve space comfort and enhance employee productivity at an economical first cost while keeping energy
costs low.
• Airflow Arrangement - Optional variable air volume or 100% outdoor air constant volume
• Performance Range - 1,000 to 7,500 cfm
• Cooling Capacity - 3 to 16 nominal cooling tons
All units selected with the PDX option include:
• Efficient, direct drive condenser fans that are statically and dynamically balanced.
• Condenser and evaporator coils with copper tubes mechanically expanded in aluminum fins. Evaporator
coils are mounted on a stainless steel drain pan.
• Thermal expansion valves provide refrigerant control.
• Quiet-running, hermetic scroll-type compressors mounted in an isolated compartment to be serviceable
without affecting airflow. Mounted on neoprene isolators to minimize vibration transmission and noise.

Features Benefits
Even airflow across coils for efficient cooling
Draw-thru cooling arrangement
operation and less chance of water carryover
Standard high and low pressure cutouts
Increased compressor life
and crank case heaters
Low discharge temperature cutout Prevents coils from freezing

Evaporative Cooling
The evaporative cooling section includes a galvanized steel housing with a
louvered intake, 2-inch aluminum mesh filters and a stainless steel evaporative
cooling frame around the media. The evaporative cooling media is Munters
CELdek® or GLASdek® and has a depth of 12 inches for 90% cooling
effectiveness.
The entire section mounts directly to the front of the unit, eliminating transition
or ductwork by others. Drain and overflow are conveniently tapped through the
side of the cooling section. The supply line connection is field located where
convenient.
Airflow capacity for evaporative cooling is up to 48,000 cfm. The evaporative
cooling section for units above 9,000 cfm ships separately.
Control Options:
Recirculating Pump: Includes a pump that recirculates water over the evaporative media and is activated by a
call for cooling. A field-adjustable bleed-off valve keeps mineral concentrations low.

Auto Drain and Flush: Includes a recirculating pump and a field-adjustable timer that will periodically flush the
sump to minimize mineral build-up.

Unit Options and Controls

Mixing Box
The mixing box option expands the make-up air application capabilities of the unit. This section includes low
leakage control dampers for outdoor and return air and an actuator
in a face and bypass configuration. Either 2-inch pleated disposable
or 2-inch aluminum mesh filters are available within the mixing box
section. Double wall construction is available. Weatherhoods with
a mixing box include a louvered intake with 2-inch aluminum mesh
filters to prevent moisture from entering the mixing box section.
Control Options:
Building Pressure Control: Outdoor air and return air dampers
modulate to maintain desired building pressure. Furnace control
is based on discharge temperature. A remote control panel with
photohelic gauge is required with this option.
Potentiometer Control: Enables manual control of the outdoor air and
return air damper positions. A remote control panel is required with
this option.
External Signal: Outdoor air and return air dampers modulate based on an external 2-10 VDC or 4-20 mA signal.

Unit Controls
Remote Panel - Greenheck offers three types of remote control panels featuring a variety of switches,
thermostats, temperature selectors and indicator lights. Installation and field-wiring is easy by using a
numbered terminal strip for point-to-point wiring between the make-up air unit and the remote panel.

Industrial/Severe Duty: The industrial Kitchen (KSCP): Features toggle

switches mounted in/on a stainless
steel panel satisfying the following NEMA enclosure
requirements: 3, 3R, 4, 4X, 12.

Network Interface Controller - An optimum solution for connecting a make-up air unit to a Building
Management System (BMS). The network interface controller offers an easy-to-use, remote-mounted display. It
easily integrates to BACnet® IP, BACnet® MSTP, LonWorks® or Modbus. Two operating options are available:
Monitor only: Allows the BMS to monitor the status and functions of the unit through a
factory-installed controller. Control commands will be provided by terminal style signals
from a remote panel or external to the unit.
Monitor and Control: Allows the BMS to monitor the status and command the basic
functions of the unit through a factory-installed controller. A remote panel is not available
with this option.

Kitchen Combination Packages

The Greenheck combination package simplifies installation and reduces field labor costs for kitchen ventilation
systems. The pre-engineered design ensures that the supply fan, exhaust fan, curb and combination extension
components interface properly.
Equally important, Greenheck combination packages are
specifically designed to comply with NFPA 96.
NFPA 96 states:
• Exhaust duct must terminate at least 24 inches above
the roof deck
• Fan discharge must be at least 40 inches above the
roof deck
• Air intake shall have a horizontal separation of Consult local codes and the authority having jurisdiction
