New applications for polyurethane adhesives

for bonding rotor blades
Dr. Michael Gansow, Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, Düsseldorf, Germany

I n the last few years, development work on high-performance adhe-

sives has consistently contributed to the realization of increasingly
efficient wind turbines. Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has now, for the
proved a polyurethane (PUR) adhesive from Henkel for the bonding
of self supporting rotor blade constructions.

first time, certified a new polyurethane adhesive that makes the pro-
duction of rotor blades significantly more efficient than with epoxy
technology.

Wind turbines have to withstand extreme stressing, with the tips

of the rotor blades whipping through the air at top speeds of up to
300 km/h. And the bigger the rotor diameter, the higher the energy
yield. Today’s rotor blades are up to 61 meters long and weigh up to
15 metric tons. Proving equal to these gargantuan parameters, ther-

though larger wind turbines are more efficient, profitability depends
decisively on production costs. The race is on to shorten production
cycles and bring down production costs overall. The bonding process
is of course also affected by this trend. However, maturing over the
years, epoxy technology is now reaching its limits here because of
its restricted range of possible formulations. New technological ap-
proaches are called for. Henkel is now presenting a solution in the
shape of its newly developed polyurethane adhesive Macroplast UK
1340.

Because of their large spectrum of possible polymer architectures,
polyurethane adhesives have been employed for assembly bonding The two-component polyurethane adhesive consists of resin and

comparison, 200 g of mixed components, pot life 60 min.

Reducing the exothermic reaction benefits the process in two ways.

When composite materials are bonded, stress cracking caused by
excessive thermal loading may weaken the rotor blade as a whole.
This risk is significantly reduced if the reaction temperature is lower.
Polymerization that takes place at high temperatures is always ac-
companied by changes in volume. Low heat emission and hence
lower thermal loading during chemical crosslinking thus reduce
heat-related shrinkage. The exothermic reaction also depends on
the quantity of adhesive reacting and releasing heat. This means
that areas where larger amounts of adhesive are applied get much
hotter than those with smaller quantities. On a rotor blade there

hence considerable differences in stress. At the interfaces between
