graduates!

Afrikaans is a lekker language and part of our heritage in South

Africa. The majority of our Born in Africa learners are schooled in
Afrikaans.
This year we focused on improving their mother tongue in various
ways—one of which was to hold a Spelling Bee or dictation competition
for our Gr 2-10 learners. A total of 110 Born in Africa learners gathered
for this fun filled event. First, second and third places were selected and
we are incredibly proud of each child who participated.
In lieu of promoting Afrikaans we have also purchased 40 dictionaries
We are looking for for children to use to complete their homework, projects and even
new godparents to research complicated words or double check their spelling. This
support more improves their vocabulary in a big way. The Afrikaans library we also
children have for our learners allows them to select books to read and really
works wonders in support of their mother tongue. We are also so proud

can enter poetry in Dutch or Afrikaans and for years now, our children
have been selected as winners and runners up. We continue to boost
our learners to exceed at Afrikaans, which is very much alive in South
Africa our Rainbow nation where we boast 11 official languages.

Our mission is to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults who act as role
models in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children
and young adults from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.

Education is incredibly important as it not only enables individuals to earn and live well but also aids the
economy by increasing the country’s value of human capital, natural capital and skilled workforce,
allowing countries to compete and succeed economically and combat poverty in the long run. While
mentioning all this, we constantly think of all the socio economic issues Born in Africa deals with while
working with our young people.

More Learners Excelling...

To be selected for your province is a big honour, not only for
yourself but also for your whole community and school.
A few of our learners were selected by the Eden Provinical
team to play netball or rugby this coming July in the holi-
days:
For netball Dovyone Jansen (U19), Esona Matshikiza
(U14), Cheiniel Seedat (U12), Natasha Williams (U16) and
for rugby Alvinio Mintoor (U13). Well done Springboks!
Activities
Our World Gadget Factory
Born in Africa learners at The Crags Primary were part of the World Gadget Factory for eight weeks, where they
built their own creations out of recyclables and learning to implement electrical components. Have a look….

Educational Coordinator Veronique and volunteer Liselot taught

this excited bunch the basics about electrical circuits, using fun
educational tool boxes. Discussing why it is so important to recycle
and upcycle, with the kids bringing recyclables from their homes to
build something new. They were free to choose what to build, as
long as they integrated an electrical component. After weeks of
planning and building, they showcased the end result to judges Ms.
Blouw (teacher and BIA alumni), Belinda and Isabelle. They
decided who the best three were and gave them lovely prizes.
Thank you all!

Spelling Competition Continued

What an awesome day for all the Born in Africa participants, judges,
teachers, staff and volunteers. We all gathered at the Kranshoek
Education centre where our 110 learners from Gr 2 to Gr 10
participated in the Semi-Finals by writing a test. The top three went
through to the Finals where they had to write words on a white board
and display this in front of the judges and students. The winners
received vouchers, memory sticks and goody bags. In our eyes
everyone was a winner and therefore each child who participated
received a goody bag and Diploma.
The brilliance of this competition is that each child had to learn more
than 500 complicated Afrikaans words. They had to learn the correct
spelling of the word, the meaning of the word, the correct use of
punctuation, grammar and capital letters. Kudos to the mentors for
assisting the learners and most of all well done to each and every child
at Born in Africa for your efforts.
Volunteers on a Roll
While we are writing this newsletter, we are preparing to say farewell to this vibrant group of volunteers. After
having them on the team for about four months, it really is quite sad to see them leave.

Mathisse Noelmans, Liselot Van Nieuwenhuyze, Pauline Maelfait and Simon Krause introduced themselves in our last
newsletter and now that their time at Born in Africa is coming to an end, we would like to shed some light on what it is like to
be a volunteer.

When a volunteer decides to apply via the website to work at Born in Africa, they first get in touch with Lotte Van Buyten
and Nele Schroyen - volunteers and board members of Born in Africa in Belgium. These two amazing ladies meet up with
all candidates, either over a cup of coffee or virtually, if the volunteer does not live in Belgium. This offers volunteers the
opportunity to ask all necessary questions they have and for Lotte and Nele to make sure the volunteer’s needs and
expectations are in line with Born in Africa’s volunteering program.
Afterwards, both parties take some time to process the information and if everyone’s keen to get started, the candidate will
get the green light to plan their trip to South Africa. For many, that also means applying for a visa, as Born in Africa
recommends volunteers stay for at least three months. Those volunteers who do their practical or internship with us, must
of course submit a lot of paperwork for their college or university. Educational mentor Veronique, who is also the intern
mentor at BIA, gladly helps with filling these in. Born in Africa strives to support its volunteers in the entire process as best
possible as they are crucial for the goals we pursue with the children.
Upon arrival in George, the closest airport to Plettenberg Bay, a staff member will pick the volunteer up and bring them
safely to the volunteer house and office of Born in Africa. There the adventure begins! During the first two weeks they get
to see the different schools, meet the BIA staff members and attend different after school activities. Once they know how
things are run at Born in Africa, they choose the school they want to work at and organize their own afterschool program.
This is entirely dependant on the strengths and interests of the volunteer or intern.
Interns in Applied Psychology, Liselot and Pauline, worked about emotions and positive psychology, while volunteer Simon
taught a small group of boys the basics of coding. Social work intern Mathisse taught our children about budgeting. It is only
fair to say that volunteers at Born in Africa get a lot of freedom in what they want to offer to the kids. All of this contributes to
volunteers always leaving Born in Africa with a happy heart and a lot of personal growth. If you are interested in becoming a
volunteer, make sure to apply on the website asap as places are limited!

Dreams in Africa
Born in Africa kids dream big, because they know they can! Thanks to the amazing
sponsors of Dream in Africa, we can make so many dreams come true. The smile on
their faces when their dream becomes a reality, is so precious.

Big thanks goes to Jane & Alan Bradley who are the
reason behind a lot of these smiles. They gave vouchers
to those dreaming of going shopping, headphones to our
music lovers and beds to children who dream of having a
bed of their own. Thank you for your amazing support!
We are also grateful to Steve & Teresa Carr who
sponsored microwaves and made a valuable contribution
to those households and families.

bedroom she had been dreaming of. This make over
means a lot to her, thank you.
Finally, Pretty Sisipho N. had a very special birthday this
year thanks to Ton & Kora. They made it possible for her
to decorate her very own cake at famous bakery ‘Clare’s
Cakes’ in Plett. This was exactly what she dreamt of.
Thank you all for making our children believe in their
dreams again!

It is with great sadness that we inform our readers, sponsors, friends and family of the passing
of Hilde De Baets. May you rest in peace, Hilde.
Hilde has been a part of the Born in Africa family for many years. She joined Born in
Africa when she and her husband Jo became godparents in 2006, since then she has
been instrumental in various fundraising projects year after year. Hilde was always
passionate about her very own flea market for Born in Africa which she would
organize ever year in May. Hilde was also a board member of Born in Africa Belgium.
She was loved by all who knew her. Her lust for life was admired by all she touched
and the Born in Africa children and team are going to miss her dearly. We send lots of
strength to her family and friends and hope Hilde is in a sunny spot somewhere, as
she lived to travel and enjoy warm climates all around the world.
