I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
According to a meteorologist from PAGASA the Philippines has a tropical climate which is either dry
or wet. Climate is affected by temperature and precipitation. There are other factors affecting climate.Find
out as you perform the next activity.
1. Describe the effects of topography, latitude, altitude, distance from bodies of water
and landmass to climate,
2. Explain how different factors affect the climate of an area
III. ACTIVITIES:
A. Activity
a. Topography: Compare the left and right sides of the mountain. Read each statement beside
the picture and decide whether it describes the left or right side of the mountain. Write the letters of your an
swers on the boxes provided.
A. Wind blows and is blocked by the
LEEWARD mountain, forcing it to move upward
WINDWARD B. Wind moves downward
Dry Air C. Area becomes dry and has less
Warm, moist air precipitation or rainfall
D. Dry region is called rain shadow
E. High amount of rainfall
F. Vegetation includes desert plants
and grassland
G. Lots of vegetation

c. Latitude: Why do you think the Earth has different Climate Zones? Shade the areas with high temperatu
re using a red color and the coldest places on Earth with a blue/green shade.

d. Now let's take a look at these Climate Info-Chart. Read the give information.
LATITUDE: As latitude increases, the average Belts at 0° and at 60° North and South latitude
yearly temperature decreases. s produce heavy precipitation. Belts centered
at 30° North and South latitudes produce dry cl
imate and deserts.

This time provide the correct term/s from this table in order to complete the following statements abo
ut climate.
Places near the ______________ receives much of the radiant energy released by the sun so, they
have ______________climate. As the Altitude increases, the air temperature _______________. At higher
elevations, there's less air which means less pressure. The gas molecules collide less frequently with each
other, thus reducing their kinetic energy and so their temperature. That is why the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro in
Africa is covered with ice though it is found near the equator.
2
Coastal areas have more moderate climate due to the neighboring bodies of water than those places near.
This is because soil ______________faster than water and soil _____________ heat faster than water. The
body of water regulates the temperature.
2.How does the climate in coastal areas differ from that of continental areas or places near land
masses? _____________________________________________________________________________

3.How will you compare the climate of the windward and leeward sides of a mountain?

D. APPLICATION:
By this time do you think you can now act as a travel consultant or as a meteorologist/climatologist to
guide some people who wants to explore and visit places in this imaginary continent which is surrounded by
water? Take note of the climate in the areas as affected by the different factors in the previous discussion.
3
The degrees in latitudes are also indicated. The arrows indicate the direction of the prevailing winds. Large
mountain ranges (^^^) are also indicated. Points A, B and E are located at sea level. Points C and D are in
the foothills of the mountains. Point F is high in the mountains. What advice or precautions will you give to
some travelers who will go to any of these places?
