A sequel is a movie with a story that continues the previous one. It, usually, has a sign like
number at the title, such as 2, or 3. The main character is still the same, but the
differences are in the conflict and plot. As the example, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3,
and Toy Story 4.

A prequel is a movie which made after the first film but the story tells before the first film
(back story). Same as the sequel, the major character is still the same, but the differences
are in the plot and conflict. Monster Inc released in 2001 and Monster University released
in 2013. Although Monster Inc released before Monster University, the story in Monster
University is earlier than Monster Inc.

Remake

A remake movie recreates the movie with the same story and universe from the previous
movie. The film usually made far different time span. For example, the first movie of
Aladdin released in 1992. Then, the remake movie released in 2019. The point of a studio
film to create a remake film is to bring back the sense of glory like the success in the first
film. Besides, there’s a remake film also made a cross country. The Grudge, which is the
original movie from Japan named Ju-On, was a remake film by Hollywood.

A reboot is a movie which used a new universe from the same major character. The story
in Reboot doesn’t have any connection with the previous one. Thus, this film doesn’t look
like the same from the previous film. A reboot movie makes a new identity. For example,
there are many differences in the Spider-Man franchise. As you can see, you can compare
which Spider-Man movie do you think is the best? The first Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire),
or the first reboot (Andrew Garfield), or the second reboot (Tom Holland).

A spin-off movie is a type to tell the minor character story as the main character. Spin-off
story uses the character from the same universe. The differences only in the conflict and
the main character. As an example, Minion, as we know from Despicable Me franchise, is a
minor character. The main character of Despicable Me is Gru as the owner of Minions. The
spin-off movie from Despicable Me franchise is Minions.

Crossover

Crossover is a combination of many differences film from the same universe. The film
created from the same studio. They want to combine some successful main characters to
become one film. The film can create in the form of a franchise or standalone movie. As an
example, The Avengers made by the superhero combination of the Marvel Cinematic
Universe.

That’s all types of the franchise along with the function and the example. The differences
aspects are in inside of the story, the main character, and the universe. The reason why
the studio creates a franchise because of an enthusiastic audience. The enthusiastic
audience wants to see the next film and every movie from the franchise. As long as the
audience still likes the franchise, they won’t die. So, for the filmmaker, if they want to
create a franchise movie, they required to make an interesting film. That’s the way the
audience will feel attracted to see every movie of a franchise.
