Assessment task details

Assignment Three

For this assignment you should prepare a critically argued essay that sets out
the methodologies considered for your planned research project. The essay
should include philosophical aspects of research design that demonstrate a
critical understanding of key over-arching theoretical frameworks. You should
also demonstrate and articulate a critical understanding of key terminology
including ontology, epistemology, paradigm and ethics.

This assignment requires you to write your research proposal in readiness for
completing your own research project in the ONLED05 Research Project
Module.

In this assignment, you need to provide a clear and critical rationale for your
chosen approaches to your research, and should include the following elements.

 Title
 Introduction/Context – A brief summary of your workplace or
Module title Research Proposal

 Aims and Objectives/Purpose – Your Research Question

 Literature Review – Overview of relevant literature, theoretical framework
 Research Design/Methods – Sampling strategy, data collection and
analysis
 Ethical considerations – including a completed ethics form in your
appendix
 Outputs/Dissemination
 Timetable
 Resources

You do not need to follow this structure rigidly, but should include critical
consideration of these elements to meet the assessment criteria effectively.

You will find detailed information about writing your research proposal in the
micro-lectures for Week 7 of the Module.

As part of Assessment 3, you will be required to submit a research ethics form,

you will find the form and the information related to this at
https://moodle.glyndwr.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=26703 and you can also
download the ethics form from this assessment page in the Module.

You should refer to appropriate literature to support your critical consideration of

each of the elements of your research proposal. References are expected from
the module materials, as well as wider reading related to your own context (e.g.
discipline, country, educational institution).

You can approach this proposal in the first person, as this is a consideration of
your own theoretical framework and your proposed approaches to your chosen
research question.

Your work will be assessed according to the framework and criteria in the
assessment rubric.

I strongly suggest that you spend some time looking at this so that you
understand the expectations of Level 7 study.

Hints and tips

Plan your time!

You have a lot to get through on this module and being organised is essential.
Make sure that you spend your first week familiarising yourself with the
assignment tasks, deadlines and marking rubrics and then get started.

Leave yourself at least a day to edit and review your assignment before
submitting it. Reading it out loud can be helpful, or ask someone else to cast an
eye over it for typos if you can.

Plan your work!

You only have 1500 words to write for this assignment, so you need to be very
clear about the arguments that you want to make. There is no room for
descriptive writing here, and definitely no room for vague, superficial language –
precise and concise language is needed. Set the scene with a brief context and
short introduction. Then, be brave! Go straight in with the analysis and work to
convince your reader of your arguments. Systematic engagement with
theoretical concepts is a MUST at this level of writing so make sure you’ve done
your reading and participated in all of the learning activities.

Help each other!

Talk about your assignments in the module discussion spaces, put your
arguments out there and ask others to challenge what you say. This helps us to
clarify our ideas and dialogue is key to learning so give it a go and support each
other.

Marking and moderation

All work is second marked and moderated internally. A sample of work is then
reviewed by an external examiner.

Your work will be assessed using the framework and criteria included in your
Module Handbook.
