It's not possible
to take away 6

What is the balance with Ammu?

• How did you find it?

Rupees 175 means 100 + 70 + 5

Rupees 156 means 100 + 50 + 6

100 + 60 + 15 −
$ If one ten rupee is taken from
seven ten rupees and then 100 + 50 + 6

We can write this as

Subtract 248 from 436. rupees from 3 ten
rupees.
• What is the way?

3 ten rupees in
436 rupees. 400 + 30 + 6 − 400 + 20 + 16 −
We can add 1 ten
rupee with 200 + 40 + 8 200 + 40 + 8
6 rupees
Next 4 tens from 2 tens.
There are 4 hundred
rupees. Change one
hundred into tens

300 + 120 + 16 −
Then we can write
it this way 200 + 40 + 8

That is,

400 + 30 + 6 − 400 + 20 + 16 − 300 + 120 + 16 −

200 + 40 + 8 200 + 40 + 8 200 + 40 + 8

We can shorten these steps like this.
Hundreds Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones
