Research paper on matter of conscience, faith and tolerance

The highest result of education is tolerance. Long ago men fought and died for their faith;
but it took ages to teach them the other kind of courage, - the courage to recognize the
faiths of their brethren and their rights of conscience. — Helen Keller 4. Conscience defines as
something that people must decide about according to what they believe is morally right,
Faith is strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension
rather than proof and tolerance is the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the
existence of opinions or behaviour that one does not necessarily agree with.

Conscience exists as a faculty of the human soul. Conscience is fed and nourished, ordered
and directed by what is presented to it in the rational ability of man to know objective moral
truth — that is, to grasp what is truly good and what is truly evil. It does not exist apart from
man’s intellect or free will. Contrary to some popular misconceptions, conscience is not the
“source” of morality, but rather is its “servant.”

There are 5 psychological characteristics of faith loosely connected with 5 periods of

adolescent development: experience of love and de-centration, knowledge of moral fault,
acceptance of mystery and development of "symbolic sense," sense of expectancy, and
finally, joyful assurance and security. The expression “just have faith, it will work out” is used
by people to encourage and comfort someone facing serious problems or stressful situations.
Faith is the substance or assurance of things we hope for, but have not yet received. Faith
(confidence, belief, trust) is also our evidence of that which is not seen—the invisible spiritual
things. Faith comes before a prayer is answered or before an individual has received what he
or she has requested from God. If we have received what we asked for, then faith is not
needed.

Religious toleration may signify "no more than forbearance and the permission
given by the adherents of a dominant religion for other religions to exist, even though
the latter are looked on with disapproval as inferior, mistaken, or harmful".Religious
Tolerance refers to the ability to appreciate spiritual values, beliefs and practices
which are different from your own. This goal is a complex one due the great diversity
of religions and spiritual beliefs existing in the world today. Religious tolerance is
necessary for individuals within the society to get along, especially when a variety of
cultures and people with different religious beliefs live in one community or nation.
When religious tolerance is practised, unity and consistency exist in society.

As nouns the difference between conscience and faith is that conscience is the moral sense

of right and wrong, chiefly as it affects one's own behaviour while faith is a feeling,
conviction, or belief that something is true or real, not contingent upon reason or
justification.
Fundamental freedom of thought, conscience and belief. Islam emphasizes the
establishment of equality and justice, both of these values cannot be established
without some degree of tolerance. The Qur’an speaks about the basic dignity of all
human beings. freedom of faith and conscience is, to put it briefly, the universal right
to independently adopt and practice a faith of one’s choice. This right includes being
able to receive the education required for a thorough practice of one’s faith and the
liberty to teach others about a faith’s beliefs and practices. We are not born with the
ability to make mature, reasoned decisions of conscience immediately, rather we
learn about the world through a process of growth and development. We do not have
to have faith in order for conscience to work well. It is possible to learn how to live
well by learning from good role models, from reflecting on experience and by striving
to know ourselves. For Christians, though, faith in God brings another important
dimension. Those who consider religion merely a matter of conscience are
corrupting religion by way of interpretations that contradict a faith’s Divinely ordained
nature

Religion is a source of prosperity and kindness. It is not an unpleasant thing that

people can only accept by compulsion. In this respect, enforcing religion and
religious issues rather than explaining the topic of faith in a civil manner may cause
antipathy towards religion.
