Expanding the Content of an Outline Using Notes from

Primary and Secondary Sources
Background Information:
In writing, especially in non-fiction, it is always a must to get a reliable source that can
strongly back up the content of a piece. A good reliable source is the very foundation of an excellent
written work.
This Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) aims to let you expand the content of an outline using
notes from primary and secondary sources which will help you learn about being reliable, not just in
writing a piece, but also in your day-to-day living.
Let us learn about the two types of sources first. A primary source is a document or
physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were
present during an experience or period and offer an inside view of a particular event. Some types of
primary sources include:
• ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS (excerpts or translations acceptable):
✓ Diaries
✓ Speeches
✓ Manuscripts
✓ Letters
✓ Interviews
✓ News film footage
✓ Autobiographies
✓ Official records
• CREATIVE WORKS:
✓ Poetry
✓ Drama
✓ Novels
✓ Music
✓ Art

Secondary sources discuss, interpret, analyze, consolidate, or otherwise rework

information from primary sources. In researching a paper about Philippine Laws, you might read
articles about legal cases that involved court trials, or editorials expressing commentary on the
Philippine Constitution. These would be considered secondary sources because they are one step
removed from the primary source of information.
• PUBLICATIONS:
✓ Textbooks
✓ Magazine articles
✓ Histories
✓ Criticisms
✓ Commentaries
✓ Encyclopedias

Now, let’s take a look into Content Outline writing. The writing process can be complicated,
especially when you don’t know where to start. That is why outlining is a vital part of the writing
process. A Content Outlining is simply a framework for presenting the main and supporting ideas for
a particular subject or topic. Outlines help you develop a logical, coherent structure for your paper,
making it easier to translate your ideas into words and sentences.
1
Once your outline is complete, you’ll have a clear picture of how you want your paper to
develop. (Horkoff, 2021)
Here are the parts of an outline:
• Introduction
The purpose of the introduction is to give your reader a clear idea of what
your outline will cover. It should provide some background information on the specific
problem or issue you are addressing, and should clearly outline your answer.
• Body
The body is where you fully develop your argument. Each body paragraph
should contain one key idea or claim, which is supported by relevant examples and
evidence from the body of scholarly work on your topic (i.e. academic books and
journal articles). The body is usually composed of more than one paragraph.
• Conclusion
It's the last paragraph of your essay or any other college pager, summarizing
its thesis and arguments. (Horkoff, 2021)
