MATHEMATICAL OPERATIONS

Mathematical operations:

In this type, you are provided with substitutes for

various mathematical symbols, followed by a
question involving calculation of an expression or
choosing the correct / incorrect equation. The
candidate is required to put in the real signs in the
given equation and then solve the questions as
required. Note: - While solving a mathematical
expression, proceed according to the rule

BODMAS – i.e. Brackets, Of, Division,

Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.
Different types of questions covered in this topic
are as follows:

 Symbol Substitution
 Balancing the Equation
 Interchange of Signs and Numbers
 Trick Based Mathematical Operations

Note: While solving a mathematical expression,

proceed according to the rule BODMAS — i.e.,
Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition,
Subtraction
Type 1: Symbol Substitution

Example: if × means -, ÷ means +, + means ×,

then 18 × 5 ÷ 5 +6 is equal to
A. 58 B. 49 C. 43 D. 37

Solution: C
Change of symbols according to the question,
18 × 5 ÷ 5 + 6 = 18 – 5 + 5 × 6
18 – 5 + 30 = (18 + 30) = 43
Type 2: Balancing the Equation
Example: If the following equations has to be balance,
then the signs of which of the following options will be
used?
24 6 12 16 = 0
A. -, + and +
B. ÷, + and ÷
C. -, - and -
D. ÷, + and –

Solution: (d)
24÷6+12-16 = 4+12-16
=16-16=0=RHS
Type 3: Interchange of Signs and
Numbers
Example: Which one of the given interchange in signs would make
the given equation correct?
10– 2 +9 × 2 ÷ 4 = 19
A. - and ÷
B. - and +
C. ÷ and ×
D. × and ÷

Solution: (a)
Let us check the options one by one
From option (a), If we replace – by ÷ and ÷ by- we get,
10÷2+9×2-4
=5+18-4(BODMAS)
=19
Type 4: Trick Based Mathematical
Operations
Example: If 9 × 5 × 2 = 529 and 4 × 7 × 2 = 724, then 3 × 9 × 8 =?
A. 983
B. 839
C. 938
D. 893

Solution: (a)
Practice Examples

1. If × stands for 'addition', ÷ stands for

'subtraction', + stands for 'multiplication' and -
stands for 'division', then
20 × 8 ÷ 8 - 4 + 2 = ?

A) 80
B) 25
C) 24
D) 15
 20 × 8 ÷ 8 - 4 + 2 = 20 + 8 - 8 ÷ 4 X 2
 =24
 Option C
2. If - means ×, × means +, + means ÷ and ÷
means -, then 40 × 12 + 3 - 6 ÷ 60 = ?

a) 7.95
b) 44
c) 20
d) None of these
 40 + 12 ÷ 3 X 6 - 60 = 4
3. If + means ÷, × means -, ÷ means × and -
means+, than 8 + 6 × 4 ÷ 3 - 4 = ?

a) -12
b) 20/3
c) -20/3
d) -20
 8 ÷ 6 – 4 X 3 + 4 = - 20 / 3
4. If × means ÷, - means ×, ÷ means + and +
means-, than (3 - 15 ÷ 19) × 8 + 6 = ?

a) 8
b) 6
c) 5
d) 2
 (3 X 15 + 19) ÷ 8 - 6 = 64/8- 6=2
5. If + means ×, ÷ means -, × means ÷ and -
means +, what will be the value of
4 + 11 ÷ 5 - 55 = ?

a) 23
b) 45
c) 29.3
d) None of these
