Objectives
:
At the end of the lesson, the students would be able to:

a. Distinguish between common and proper nouns;


b. Determine rules in pluralizing nouns;
c. State the importance of nouns in communication; and
d. Transform the given nouns into their plural forms.
Common and Proper Nouns
Common Nouns
- used to name general groups,
people, places, things and ideas.
Example:
month, day, country, ocean
Proper Nouns
- refer to a specific person,
place, or thing and are always
capitalized.
Example:
September, Tuesday, Philippines, Pacific Ocean
RULES IN
PLURALIZATION OF NOUNS
Rules for Making Plurals
Rule # 1

Add an (s) to form the plural of most of words.

Examples: book – books


bug – bugs
friend – friends
tutor – tutors
flower – flowers

Rule # 2
For words that end in (s, z, x, ch, sh, ss) add (es) to form the
plural.

Examples: bus – buses


box – boxes
church – churches
bush – bushes
class – classes

*With words that end in Z sometimes we add an extra Z to the


plural form of the word (such as with the plural of quiz).

If the word ends in a vowel + (y)


[ay, ey, iy, oy, uy] add an (s) to the word.

Examples: tray – trays


key – keys
stay – stays
toy – toys
buy – buys

Rule # 4

If the word ends in a consonant + (y) change the (y) into (i) and
add (es) to form the plural.

Examples: enemy – enemies


cherry – cherries
baby – babies
party – parties
dictionary – dictionaries

Rule # 5

For words that end in (f), drop the (f) change it to (v) & add (es) for the
plural. For words that end in (fe), change the (f) to (v) & ad (es) to form the
plural.

Examples: wolf - wolves


wife - wives
knife – knives
self – selves

*Some exceptions: roof - roofs, cliff - cliffs, chief - chiefs, belief - beliefs,
chef - chefs

Rule # 6

For most nouns that end in a consonant + (o), add (es) to make the
noun plural.

Examples: tomato – tomatoes


hero - heroes
potato – potatoes
volcano - volcanoes

To form the plural of some nouns that end in a consonant + (o), just
add (s).

Examples: ego – egos


dynamo – dynamos

*In most cases, if a noun ends in a consonant + (o), and it is related


to music, just an (s) is needed to form the plural.

Examples: solos, pianos, contraltos, altos, cellos, sopranos


Irregular Plurals
a. Some nouns change spelling in the plurals.

b. Some nouns do not change in plural.

- scissors
