Indonesians like to use home remedies to cure sickness. These home remedies are usually
passed on through many generations. For example, to cure cough, Indonesians use syrup
made of lemon juice mixed with soy sauce; for diarrhea, they boil guava leaves for a
drink; for fever, they use shallots and oil.
Read the following passage about the Indonesian pharmaceutical industry and answer the
questions. After that, compare the answers with your partner.
kecil,” kata mantan Sekretaris Bidang Industri Gabungan Pengusaha Farmasi Indonesia Drs. M.
Dani Pratomo.
Penyebab
lain, produksi mereka cenderung profit oriented, tanpa memikirkan investasi infrastruktur jangka
panjang.

Many Indonesian children get their important vaccines from PUSKESMAS (Pusat
Kesehatan Masyarakat - Public Health Center). This is a government operated clinic
which exists in every Kecamatan in Indonesia. The services costs less than hospitals
or private clinics. Some PUSKESMAS have one or two resident doctors; and others
have nurses or paramedics. Departemen Kesehatan (The Health Department) also
works with schools to make sure that all children are vaccinated.
In villages, periodic health services for children are held called POSYANDU (Pusat
Pelayanan Terpadu - Integrated Service Center). These centers are manned by
volunteers from the village, usually members of women groups that exist in the village
or university students. Vaccinations are sometimes available in these centers, but this
center is mainly focused itself on nutrition. In these centers, the children will have their
weight checked and with simple charts the volunteers can determine whether the
children's weights are normal. Vitamins, milk and nutritiously balanced food are
usually distributed as a part of the service.

Jamu is very famous in Indonesia as an alternative medicine for curing various diseases.
These herbal medicines have been used since ancient times, and are largely consumed by
people of different social levels in the villages and in the big cities.
Today, one can buy ready-made jamu in modern packaging in the form of powder, pills,
capsules, drinkable liquids and ointments. You can also find jamu shops which only sell
jamu ingredients or prepare jamu on the shop as required by buyers. It is also common to
see vendors (mostly women) across the country roaming the streets selling jamu.
There are different types of jamu for various purposes. In general though, there are two
types of jamu. The first type are those for maintaining physical fitness and health, such
as Galian Singset (to keep women’s body fit and slim) and Sehat Lelaki (to keep men’s
bodies healthy) for instance. The second type are jamu for curing various kinds of
illness.
The Javanese take good care of pregnant women during the pre-and postnatal periods by
producing a special jamu for pregnancy. There is also a special jamu for baby.

Form groups of four. Each group will read the following passage about an Indonesian
pharmacy. Discuss the content of this passage in your group.
sedangkan sisanya perusahaan swasta lokal. Dari jumlah itu 60 di antaranya menguasai 84%
pasar.
orang mampu mendapat asuransi.
