I.LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency
Navigate a website using essential features, e.g., using heading, links, etc.

B. Objectives
1. Recognize essential features of websites such as links and headings
2. Use skimming and scanning in locating information from website navigation
3. Appreciate the use of links and headings in searching for information from websites

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Gathering information from the internet has become a part of everyday life. You
browse websites to search for topics assigned by your teachers. You watch videos on
YouTube to explore how to prepare Dalgona coffee or how to use the scanner. You open
your social media account to get the latest news feeds and messages from your friends and
loved ones. Indeed, almost everything is within the click of the finger.

Hence, this lesson will help you to use headings and links in websites so that searching
topics and information would be easy, fast, and reliable.

You have already learned how to use electronic search engines and locate web
sources in the previous module. Nonetheless with the multitude of websites on the internet,
are you certain that the links you’re opening are safe and reliable? When you open the links
and are presented with articles, videos, illustrations, and other graphics, are you sure that they
are updated and accurate?

Watch this video clip to guide you in checking facts online.

Please click the link below to watch the video: How to Fact-Check Online Sources.

So, if you're visiting an online site for the first time or downloading a new app, ask
these five questions:

Who ran or created the site or app? Can you trust them?

What is the site or app promising or offering? Are the claims too good
to be true?
When was its information written or reviewed? Is it up-to-date?
Where does the information come from? Is it based on scientific
research?

Why does the site or app exist? Does it sell something?

Furthermore, you should also check the domain name of the site. Looking at the URL
or address of the website will already give you insights on whether the information contents
are valuable or not. Take note of the following extension at the end of the websites:

.org: An advocacy .net: A site from a network

.com: A business or
website, such as a not- commercial site
organization or an Internet
for-profit organization service provider

.il.us: A state government

.edu: A site affiliated with
.gov: A federal site, this may also include
a higher education
government site public schools and
institution
community colleges

.uk (United Kingdom): A

site originating in another
country (as indicated by
the 2 letter code)

Again, as a review of your lesson on module 2, once you have decided to get
information from the web, make sure that you also take note of the:
● Author(s) (if available)
● article or document title
● organization that sponsors the site
● database name (if applicable),
● date of publication
● date you accessed the site
● URL

Nonetheless, with the countless topics, articles, videos and other materials, how would
you be able to digest as much information given limited time and access? You must learn
some reading techniques like skimming and scanning.

2
RO_English_Grade 7_Q2_LP3
Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When you read the
newspaper, you are probably not reading it word-by-word, instead you are skimming the text.
Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim
when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when you
want to see if an article may be of interest in your research.

The following skimming strategies are beneficial in reading:

titles and subtitles/headings and

sub-headings
first and last paragraphs

illustrations, graphs, tables and

charts
the first sentence in each
paragraph

Scanning is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book
or dictionary. You search for key words or ideas. In most cases, you know what you're looking
for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your
eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also used when
you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer your questions. Once you have
scanned the document, you might go back and skim it.
