QUESTION ONE
a) Open source software is the best to use in small businesses. Do you agree with this
statement or not? Justify your stand by giving at least four valid reasons for your
stand.(5 Marks)

Open source software is a type of software that gives users access to the source code, which
they can edit. Open source software has been extremely popular in recent years, particularly
in the IT industry. It is currently employed in a variety of industries, including business,
education, and personal pursuits. Mozilla Firefox, Open Office, WordPress, and Blogger are
some instances of open source software.

The reason as to why I agree with the above statement is that open source software gives
small businesses unrestricted access to fully functional software that can help them grow and
automate their operations for little or no expense. Open source business software also offers
an advantage over commercial software in that it may be adapted to your needs. Why try to
cram a square peg into a round hole when you can have software that is tailor-made for your
business and its objectives.

Here are some fundamental advantages I believe open source offers small businesses:
i. IT IS FLEXIBLE AND AGILE
IT leaders must ensure that their organization's flexibility and agility are fundamental. You
will be left behind by the competition if you cannot compete on agility. Open source allows
for technological flexibility by providing many solutions to problems. Because a certain
capability is not accessible from a vendor, open source helps keep your IT group from
becoming stymied. You do not have to wait for the vendor to provide that capacity; you can
build it yourself.
ii. SPEED
Most companies if not all will soon be competing on speed. Speed is enabled through open
source. One of the biggest benefits of open source is the flexibility to use community versions
to get started, figure out if they can solve your business challenge, and start delivering value
right away. Professional support and services for open source products, particularly those
offered by Red Hat, are becoming increasingly available once you have made that decision.
iii. IT IS COST-EFFECTIVE
In most cases, open source is far less expensive than a proprietary solution. Not only are open
source solutions in the enterprise often far less expensive for similar or higher capacity, but
they also allow businesses to start small and expand up (more on that coming up). Given how
often businesses are strapped for cash, it only makes sense to look at open source solutions.
iv. ATTRACT BETTER TALENT
Enterprises may attract greater talent by using open source. Open source is well known
among professional technologists, and many believe it is where the industry is headed. Many
people love working on their own projects and collaborating with people outside of their
company to discover solutions. Giving developers more independence and freedom can help
you attract better developers.

b) You have been contacted by your former secondary school to present an overview of
VIRTUAL REALITY to their form four class. Develop a PowerPoint presentation of
not more than 15 slides for this task. Note: Mastery of both VIRTUAL REALITY as a
subject as well as use of PowerPoint presentation software will be the basis of grading
this question. You must show the ability to present this topic to the level of the
audience using a complement of short points and images. (10 Marks)

QUESTION TWO
a) A network administrator advices the top management the need for a server based
network architecture. Give two plausible reasons behind this advice. (2 Marks)
The characteristic of a server-based network is that it is centralized. Furthermore, with this
type of network, storage is centralized. To put it another way, a server-based network is built
on a centralized structure and allows users to communicate via the internet. The Internet is
the most popular client-server network in the world.

Servers are special computers that handle network activities including authenticating users,
storing files, managing printers, and executing applications like database and e-mail systems
in a server-based network. A security provider's security is typically centralized, allowing
users to connect on to any computer on the network using a single user account. Files can be
readily safeguarded and backed up because they are kept centrally.

Reasons for going with server based network;

I. A server provides your business with network security
This is one of the best and most important advantages of having a server. Individual rights
can be provided to users based on the nature and amount of data they can access based on
their needs by creating distinct group and individual accounts.
This can significantly reduce illegal data access and offer your network with the additional
security you have been looking for.
II. A server provides your business with a centralized back up facility
Data loss is widespread in the workplace for a variety of causes, including machine
malfunctions and negligence. These difficulties are particularly problematic when the
workplace works without a server.
In this regard, a server can be regarded a boon because it greatly speeds up the data backup
procedure. You will be able to back up all of your data, including your emails, to a
centralized storage location on your server, reducing the headaches of data loss while also
increasing office productivity.
b) Investigate the Internet of Things. Select one example and describe what it is and how
it works.(4 Marks)
IoT transforms formerly "dumb" gadgets into "smart" ones by allowing them to transfer
data over the internet and communicate with people and other IoT-enabled devices.
A nice illustration of IoT in action is the connected "smart house." Internet-connected
thermostats, doorbells, smoke detectors, and security alarms form a linked hub in which
data is shared between physical devices and users can operate the "things" in that hub
remotely (e.g., changing temperature settings, opening doors, etc.) via a smartphone app
or website. The Internet of Things is not only for the house; it is found in a variety of
gadgets, sectors, and situations. IoT is fast making the world wiser by connecting the
physical and the digital, from smart blackboards in school classrooms to medical gadgets
that can detect signs of Parkinson's disease.
Any physical thing that can be connected to the internet and controlled or communicate
information can be transformed into an IoT device.

Smart Home
Because it is the most affordable and widely available IoT application at the time, the
smart home is likely the most popular IoT application. There are hundreds of items on the
market that customers can control with their voices, ranging from the Amazon Echo to the
Nest Thermostat, to make their lives more connected than ever.

c) Compare and contrast the capabilities of Wi-Fi and 3G/4G wireless networks.
(4 Marks)
The exponential concurrent growth of both the Internet and cellular telephone services have
been the two most important phenomena affecting telecommunications during the last
decade. With email, the Web, and e-commerce, the Internet delivered data communications to
the people, while cellular service enabled "follow -me- anywhere/always on" telephone.

When using your mobile device to browse the internet, you have the option of using the 3G
network or the Wi-Fi network. The most significant distinction between the two networks is
range. Wi-Fi only has a tiny coverage area, yet it is sufficient for a home or office. 3G, on the
other hand, is a cellular network that provides connectivity to mobile phones. You can travel
hundreds of kilometers without losing your connection, depending on where you are and the
network coverage. This is possible because, despite the fact that a typical cellular tower only
covers a few kilometers, the network can transfer communications from one mobile to the
next.

The speeds of 3G and Wi-Fi networks are another distinction. Wi-Fi usually has a
substantially faster connection speed than 3G. Because, in most circumstances, a Wi-Fi
network is only used by a few individuals, whereas a 3G network is used by hundreds, if not
thousands, of people in the area. There is also the matter of the user's distance from the access
point. When using Wi-Fi, the user is quite close to the tower, as opposed to 3G, when
buildings and trees separate the user and the tower.

Another significant benefit of Wi-Fi over 3G is cost. A 3G plan is costly, and you should opt
for the more expensive unlimited plan unless you enjoy being surprised by your bill. Wi-Fi is
not always free because you have to pay for the internet connection. However, the majority of
businesses with internet access use it for other purposes. As a result, instead of paying two
bills, you can just pay one.

d) A key requirement in today's business environment is the ability to communicate

more effectively, both internally with the employees and externally with the trading
partners and customers. Explain the nature of the communication infrastructure
required to support such communication (5 Marks)
The foundation for the effective transfer of information between people is the set of tools,
procedures, and concepts that make up communication infrastructure. Groupware, e-mail,
project management software, fax, phone, teleconferencing systems, document management
systems, and word processors are just some of the tools available. Meeting ground rules and
procedures, issue solving, decision-making, dispute resolution and negotiation tactics,
reporting guidelines and templates, escalation procedures, and other techniques are examples
of techniques.

The best communication infrastructure is a complex ecosystem of separate yet interconnected

systems. It can consists of a variety of networks, including the broader Internet, cellular
networks, optical backhaul networks, and local area networks. It provides service to almost
all aspects of an organization daily life and is likely to become even more essential as people
move toward a future involving the Internet of Things (IoT) and vehicular systems.
