1. COURSE OVERVIEW

This course familiarizes students with the financial accounting concepts and its applications in managerial
decision-making. Objective of this course is to help students develop as an informed user of financial statement
information. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation and use of accounting information rather than its creation and
accumulation of data. Thus, the course does not target to train students to become an accountant.

This core module of accounting is fundamental to the understanding of all the finance and accounting courses
that follow. Even if you decide to go into other specialization such as human resources, marketing or operations,
this module remains equally important for you. As a manager you will require knowledge of accounting to
understand the implications of your decisions on the financial health of the organization.

This course is recommended for students who will be using accounting information for managing- manufacturing &service
operations; making strategic decisions; as well as those going into general consulting or thinking of starting their own
businesses. A variety of case studies in different industries and decision contexts are used to examine the application of
accounting concepts.

2. Course Objectives

The overall objective of this course is to develop the capacity to create, analyze and interpret financial information
of a company for business decisions. Using accounting information in decision making provide students with a
conceptual understanding of financial accounting and the skills required in applying knowledge for decision making..
Following the above, our focus will be on Understanding the financial reporting structure of an organization;

Establishing association of business transactions and generation of accounting data; Developing the capacity to analyze
and interpret the financial information of a company; Using accounting information in decision making.

3. Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, it is expected that the following learning outcomes will be achieved. The class provides
opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas:
• Comprehend the association of business transactions and generation of accounting data
• Understand the structure that maps transactions into accounting numbers
• Analyze and Interpret financial health of an organization using accounting information

4. REQUIREMENTS / COURSE PRE-REQUISITES (from the students)


There is no pre-requisite to the module.

For this course class participation is crucial. You will be able to effectively participate in discussions only when you have
prepared yourself adequately well for the class. Please note the quality of learning in each session will be dependent on
how much knowledge we are able to create for each other.
Evaluation of the students would be based on the following parameters:
1. Quiz (2 nos) - 20%
2. Report Submission - 20%
3. Assignments / Case Study Analysis & Submission - 20%
4. End Term Written Exam - 40%

7.1 Evaluation Scheme:

*Class participation though is not as assessment component; students are expected to participate and create a learning experience. All
students shall be evaluated through participation in discussions during case discussions and presentation Q & A.
7.2 GRADING
Students shall be graded as per the institution policy. The scores shall be earned from the evaluations.
7.3 RE-EXAMINATION / SUPPLEMENTARY POLICY
Re-examination shall be conducted in suitable cases. Students shall submit a research paper to display understanding of concepts and
application covered in the course.
7.4 DETAILS OF EVALUATION
Component 1: Quiz: Students will be required to answer two quizzes of 10 marks each. The quizzes will be administered through
LMS and sequenced as mentioned in the outline. Please note, quizzes will not be repeated and a student will lose the marks assigned
in case of absence.

Component 2: Project submission: The students would be required to analyze the annual report of the company of their choice and
provide a comparative analysis vis-à-vis the industry. They would be required submit the soft copy of their report which will include
both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The marks would be given on the basis of individual involvement in preparing report. This
would be a group assignment as per SOBD assigned groups

The project report will:


• Measure the ability to analyze and interpret the financial statements of firms.
• Measure the ability to apply concepts to assess the financial health of companies.
• Measure the liquidity and profitability of firms through ratio analysis.

Component 3: Assignments / Case Study Analysis submission: Students will be required to submit inclass and take home
assignments/analyze case study distributed for discussion. Students will have to submit a copy of their analysis which will include both
qualitative and quantitative analysis. Marks will be awarded on the basis of individual / team involvement in assignment /case analysis
submission. This will be an Individual / Group submission as per SOBD assigned groups
The assignments/case analysis will:
• Measure the ability to analyze and interpret the financial information.
• Explain the role of financial analysis in managerial decision making

Component 4: End-term Examination (2 hours): The closed book end term examination will cover the entire course. The end
term examination assess your understanding the financial reporting structure of an organization, your capacity to analyze and
interpret the financial statements of a company, and use the same in decision making.
7.5 GENERAL GUIDELINES, MINIMUM ATTENDANCE, LATE ENTRY POLICY
Late entry and late submission are not acceptable. In extreme cases, the students shall communicate with the faculty. Students
shall follow attendance policy as set up by the institution.

8. INTRODUCTION TO COURSE INSTRUCTOR(S)

Instructor - Dr.P.Malarvizhi

Dr. P. Malarvizhi is Professor of Accounting & Finance with over 30 years of Teaching, Research, Training, Consulting & Corporate
experience. She teaches courses on Financial Accounting, Cost & Management Accounting, Strategic Cost Management, Management
Control Systems & Corporate Taxation. She is a keen researcher in the field of Corporate Environmental Accounting & Reporting.
She has conducted various Management Development/Training programmes for Corporate Executives and officers of Indian
Administrative Service. She was appointed by Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), GOI as State Level Expert Advisory

Committee (SEAC) member and served as an advisor to Department of Environment, Government of Delhi.. She guides doctoral
research scholars. She has published research papers in reputed journals and is invited to present her research work at numerous national
and international conferences.

Instructor - Dr.Manpreet Kaur

Dr Manpreet Kaur is a passionate researcher and faculty having expertise in data analysis and teaching finance elective courses. She
has around 14 years of teaching experience at graduate and post-graduate level. Her administrative expertise includes data preparation
and collection for various ranking and accreditation agencies including NAAC. She has worked as program co-ordinator for MBA
program at various institutions. She is invited as resource person for FDPs and workshops on Data Analysis, Outcome based Education
and research paper writing.

Her teaching interests are Financial Modeling using MS-Excel, Data analysis using SPSS, excel and Tableau, Financial Accounting,
Corporate Finance, Investment Management, Research Methodology International Investments, Emerging issues in accounting,
Activity-based costing, Risk Management, Financial Derivatives. She has proficiency in various software’s such as Advanced MS
Excel, SPSS, STATA software for statistical modelling and analysis.
