Weld Group Under Shear and Torsion:

x1 P Py Assuming 1-unit throat size:

L = total length of welds = ∑ Li
L1 Px Pure shear effects:
Fx = Px / (1)L
L2 L3 y1 ey Fy = Py /(1)L

y2 c.g. y3 Effect of Torque:

T = Px ey + Py ex

L4 J = ∑ [1Li 3 / 12 + 1Li (xi 2 + yi 2)]

x2 x4 At any point with coordinates x and y:
x3 FTx = Ty / J
ex FTy = Tx / J
The total shear force for 1 unit throat size

F= (Fx + FTX )2 + (Fy + FTY )2

Note: Knowing the throat size t = 0.707w, the
required weld size is obtained by equating Fv (0.707w) = F(1)
or weld size w = F/(0.707Fv) where Fv = allowable shear stress on weld.

Problem: A plate is welded to a gusset plate as shown below. Using E60 electrode,
determine the required size of fillet weld.

Figure: P = 90kN P= 90kN

Solution:
Location of c.g. : (Assuming 1mm throat size) note: centroidal x-axis is obviously
AT x = ∑Ai xi at 75mm from bottom weld.
(150 + 150 + 150)(1) x = 150(1)(0) + (2)(150)(1)(100+75)
x = 116.7mm
ex = 350 – 116.7 = 233.3mm

= 5,593,750.5 150mm c.g T
75mm
Fy = Py /(1)L FT
= 90,000/450 = 200 N/mm C
For the most stressed point, (point B or C) Fy
x = 250 – 116.7 = 133.3mm x =116.7mm ex = 233.3mm
y = 75mm
Using E60 Electrode:
FTx = Ty / J = 21,000,000(75)/5,593,750.5 Fv = 0.30Fu = 0.30(425)= 127.5 N/mm2
= 281.564 N/mm w = F/(0.707Fv) = 755/(0.707x127.5)
= 8.37 mm, say 9mm weld size.
FTy = Tx / J = 21,000,000(133.3)/5,593,750.5
= 500.55 N/mm
F = (Fx + FTX )2 + (Fy + FTY )2 = (0 + 281,564 )2 + (200 + 500.55 )2 = 755 N/mm
