iv
What I Need to Know

Introduction
Literature is a blueprint of human society for it embodies its culture, beliefs
and traditions and even its successes and failures. It serves as a reflection of
reality, a product of art, and a window to an ideology.
Literature provides us with information, pleasure, entertainment and a
sense of history. But beyond these dimensions lie its transcendental significance-
its ability to portray human values and characters necessary in responding to
challenging situations. Indeed, literature is a powerful medium by which these
values and characters are molded, nurtured, strengthened and shared. The works
of Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle (the most famous Greek philosophers) contain
virtues that promote perfection to a society if only human beings have the
willingness to uphold and practice them.
In these trying times of our life, we are confronted with difficult and tough
situations. They challenge us to be more collectively vigilant, creative, resourceful,
forbearing, and critical-minded to be able to make the right decisions and do the
right actions to overcome them.
This module contains reading selections which aim to develop and instill in
you the positive universal values to live by in this volatile, uncertain, complex and
ambiguous world.
It is hoped that this material will find a place in your heart and be able to
empower you in the midst of present challenges.

Most Essential Learning Competency

VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world.

Learning Objectives:

After working on the activities of this module, you are expected to:
1. identify basic details of a literary selection;
2. recognize prevailing universal human values present in a piece of
literature/literary selection;
3. discern positive human values necessary in facing life’s challenges in given
situations; and
4. appreciate the importance of literature as a medium for influencing positive
human values in the midst of challenging situations.

v
What I Know

Before going through this module, you will first take a series of assessments
to measure your level of understanding of the topic provided herein.

Test 1.

Directions: Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow. Write
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

What was the Titanic?

To most of the passengers on board, it seemed that the ship was
successful in avoiding a substantial collision—she had merely slid past the
iceberg with only a slight disturbance. But the calm of the upper decks did not
reach those further below. Down in the boiler rooms, the damage was instantly
obvious, as the sea started rushing in through a large gash. Fireman Fred
Barrett and Assistant Second Engineer James Hesketh were forced to jump
through the watertight door as it slammed shut. Within ten minutes of the
initial iceberg sighting, the water had reached the firemen's quarters, while the
steerage passengers stood in water up to their ankles. Thinking they had gotten
the boiler rooms under control, the firemen wondered if this flooding was simply
something to laugh off.
By this time, the Titanic had come to a stop, and the passengers had
begun to take notice. Curiosity turned to horror as the mail hold quickly filled

What is It

What is literature?
Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material.
Derived from the Latin word literature meaning "writing formed with letters,"
literature most commonly refers to works of the creative imagination, including
poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and in some instances, journalism, and song.
Simply put, literature represents the culture and tradition of a language or a
people. The concept is difficult to precisely define, though many have tried; it's
clear that the accepted definition of literature is constantly changing and evolving.

Why is literature so important?

All literature, whether it be poems, essays, novels, or short stories, help us

address human nature and conditions which affect all people. These may be the
need for growth, doubts, and fears of success and failure, the need for friends and
family, the goodness of compassion and empathy, trust, or the realization of
imperfection. Literature is important and necessary. It provides growth,
strengthens our minds, and gives us the ability to think outside the box.
Indeed, literature explains human values. The works of Plato, Socrates, and
Aristotle (the most famous Greek philosophers) contain virtues that promote
perfection to a society if only human beings have the willingness to uphold and
practice them. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave speaks about the importance of human
wisdom and the penalties that one would face to achieve a higher level of
understanding.

Learning values through literature

Education isn’t just about reading, writing and arithmetic. It’s also about
life, citizenship and the value of being a good person. We need values to build a
morally upright society that will in turn contribute to healthy relationships and
help form our emotional identities with care and courage.
Both the home and school are responsible for inculcating core moral values
such as respect, responsibility, fairness, trustworthiness and citizenship.

911 to me" in the section for her delivery instructions.
Thankfully Pizza Hut Avon Park, who received the message, took the plea for
help seriously and called 911. Hostage negotiator Lt. Curtis Ludden was then

Humanity and Community in the Age of the Covid-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented crisis that brings with it a

lot of problems, especially for the poor and marginalized sectors of our society.
Those who have the least financial and other means have the hardest time
dealing with the pandemic’s impacts on health and health services, loss of
income, limited mobility and other struggles.

communities coming together in support of each other, especially for the front
liners and sectors who are experiencing the most difficulty.

communities are struggling to find their next meals, due either to loss of income
or access to food sources, or a combination of both. But some chefs and other
concerned citizens have set up various community kitchens and food programs
to try and ease a bit of the burden.
The government is hardly doing its best to be able to provide the much
needed financial and material assistance to those who are in dire need. 6Indeed,
