SAK 3002 Information Technology and its Application Assignment 1: Choosing a PC

This assignment requires you to choose a PC that suits your need as a student and summarize your findings in a report. The purpose of the report is to give you first hand experience in choosing a PC based on your requirement and budget. Text books should NOT be your major references as they will be out of date with regard to new advances. This assignment is divided into 3 parts: 1. Outline your requirements for the PC What software and hardware do you require, as a student? Any other special requirement? What is your budget?

2. Select a PC. Indicate the price. List down the hardware components of the PC and its specifications: Tower or desktop case Motherboard Processor Memory Graphic card Sound card Floppy disc Hard disc CD-ROM/DVD-ROM PC Speakers Monitor Optional extras CD writer/printer/etc 3. Explain why you have selected the PC. (software, hardware and cost taken into considerations) Detailed breakdown of the markings are as follows:

You MUST hand in:

Printed copy of the report (Handwritten assignments will not be accepted). Photocopies or printouts of the brochures and price list.
*** You must keep a copy of your assignment until the printed copy has been marked. Your report should consist of the followings:

An abstract which summarizes in one paragraph the content of the report; A table of contents, including section names and page numbers; Main body of report (broken into sections as appropriate); A conclusion; and References. Font Paragraph - Arial (size 11). - 1.5 spacing - 1500 - 2000 words (excluding bibliography). - 30 % of the total marks for this subject.

You are required to summarize the information gathered or opinion of experts in the field. This will involve quoting, paraphrasing and acknowledging the sources of these information or opinions. Marks will be deducted for poor referencing. Remember that you must substantiate any claims you make with supporting references. Note that wherever you quote directly from a source, e.g. from internet, text or article, this text MUST be in quotation marks and the source, including page numbers, acknowledged in the references.
