INTRODUCTION
❑ Aluminum occurs in abundance on the surface of the earth. It is available in various forms such as
oxides, sulphates, silicates, phosphates, etc. But is commercially produced mainly from Bauxite.
❑ Aluminum is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal,
in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface .
❑ In nature, aluminum is found only in chemical compounds with other elements such as Sulphur, silicon,
and oxygen.
❑ Pure, metallic aluminum can be economically produced only from aluminum oxide ore.
❑ Occurs in all types of clay
❑ The aluminum door frames are made from extruded aluminum sections.
❑ The channels and box sections have flanges and grooves for double glazing and weather-stripping.
❑ The glazed doors are commonly advertised as ‘patio doors’.
❑ Aluminum is a conductive material
❑ Heat transmission can be reduced by separating the ALU profile in 2 parts using an insulating material
to reduce the thermal transmission.
❑ Conductivity of Aluminum: 160 W/mK
ALUMINUM DOOR FRAMES
❑ Our aluminum frames lead the way on quality, aesthetics and availability.
❑ We carry a wide range of throat sizes to meet your needs. We also provide a custom sized
option for non-standard wall sizes.
❑ All frames are factory mortised for hinges and strike plates, minimizing field error and labor. The
frame is fastened along the outside edge with fasteners which are then covered with Snap-On
trim. The installation alleviates the problem of securing the frames through the face which, on
occasion, allows the frame to twist on the wall.
❑ We provide standard anodized finishes in clear, bronze or black. Baked-on enamel finishes are
also available in white and black, and any custom color can be matched in our in-house paint
shop.
❑ Our standalone door frames can be provided with an optional 20 minute positive-pressure fire
rating.

FIXING ALUMINUM DOOR IN
VARIOUS OPENINGS
1. Fixing door frame in opening of brick masonry

➢ Stack aluminum door frames at site on level platform to keep them in true shape without any damage.
➢ Keep the size of aluminum doorframe less than the size of opening according to the thickness of cement
plaster on sides of door opening.
➢ Fix doorframe either by cutting bricks or by removing bricks near lugs and avoid plastering on jambs that
look ugly since usually aluminum doorframe are manufactured either equal to or with little margin to the size
of opening.
➢ Use slotted, adjustable, galvanized and steel lugs of size 100x16x3 mm for fixing aluminum doors.
➢ Make use of 8 No lugs, 4 No. on each side of doorframe and keep height of lugs 45cm, 109 cm, 139 cm and
188.5 cm from floor level.
➢ Apply a thick shop coat of clear transparent lacquer on aluminum door frame to protect surface from wet
cement during installation before aluminum doors are fixed in position.
➢ Check the size of opening for obstruction if any. After marking position of lugs, the holes should be made in
masonry and lugs are fixed with cement concrete mix in the ratio of 1: 3: 6.
➢ Set the filling finally after the gap is filled with mastic cement and plaster.
2. Fixing door frame in opening of concrete surface

➢ Stack aluminum door frames at site on level platform to keep them in true shape without any
damage.
➢ Keep the size of aluminum doorframe less than the size of opening according to the thickness of
cement plaster on sides of door opening.
➢ Make use of 8 No lugs, 4 No. on each side of doorframe and keep height of lugs 45cm, 109 cm,
139 cm and 188.5 cm from floor level.
➢ Apply a thick shop coat/temporary cover of clear transparent lacquer on aluminum door frame to
protect surface from wet cement during installation before aluminum doors are fixed in position.
➢ Check the size of opening for obstruction if any. After marking position of lugs, the holes are
made in cement concrete and teak wooden plugs are fixed with cement concrete mortar mix in
the ratio of 1: 3:
➢ Fix door frame after the plugs are duly set.
➢ Set the filling finally after the gap is filled with mastic cement and plaster.
➢ 3. Fixing door frame in opening of woodwork
➢ Make an opening in wood work which are normally rebated and be fixed with approved mastic or
rubber lining to jambs.
➢ Fix doorframe with screws in woodwork already fixed.
BENEFITS OF REDUCED SIZE
ALUMINUM DOOR
As per IS 1948, the sizes of aluminum doors prescribed in drawings issued for construction
are the sizes of modular openings i.e. the sizes of opening to be provided in masonry. The
size of aluminum doorframe should not be equal to the size of opening provided in the
masonry. The following are some benefits of reduced size aluminum doors.
•Easily and properly fixed in openings without disturbing jambs since the width of aluminum
door frames is reduced by 12.5 mm on each side and height by 12.5 mm on top face during
manufacturing.
•Offers good looks. If overall size of aluminum doors frame is not reduced, 12 mm plaster on
jamb would abut the face of aluminum door frame and gives bad look.
•Keeps elevation intact. The 12 mm thick cement plaster on jambs sets in the gap left at rear
face of the frame and keeps original elevation intact.
•No problem of cracks in jambs plaster if the size of aluminum doorframe is reduced than the
opening.
Note: Hence reduction in sizes of aluminum door frames is necessary.
