FERNANDO AMORSOLO
Philippines' First National Artist

Father of Filipino Landscapes

LIFE AND WORKS WORKS OF
AMORSOLO

In the middle of the night in 1892, Pedro and Bonifacia Amorsolo

1
were awakened by a scuffle and shouting outside their home in
Daet, Camarines Norte. Some revolutionaries were outside their
home, fighting against Spaniards and demanding that Perico, their
eldest son, join their cause. Fernando, then seven months old,
awoke crying. Perico left the house that night and eventually joined
the rebels. The Amorsolo family never saw him again. Four years
later in 1896 after the discovery of the Katipunan, the family learned
from their relatives that Perico had died as a prisoner.

Fernando Amorsolo grew up in a period of transition in the

Philippines. Much of his childhood was spent in the countryside, on
which many of the landscapes in his masterpieces are based. In
1901, when he was 11 years old, his father died of a heart attack. But
before his death, Pedro made Bonifacia swear that she would do
everything she could to provide a good education to Fernando.

CARLOS V
LIFE OF BOTONG

FRANCISCO
Carlos Modesto "Botong" Villaluz Francisco (November 4, 1912 –
March 31, 1969) was a Filipino muralist from Angono, Rizal. Francisco
was a most distinguished practitioner of mural painting for many
decades and best known for his historical pieces. He was one of the
first Filipino modernists along with Galo Ocampo and Victorio C.
Edades who broke away from Fernando Amorsolo's romanticism of
Philippine scenes. According to restorer Helmuth Josef Zotter,
Francisco's art "is a prime example of linear painting where lines and
contours appear like cutouts.

Filipino Struggles Through History

WORKS
Filipino Struggles Through History was commissioned by the Manila City Government in 1964,
during the mayoral tenure of Antonio Villegas, and was installed in the Bulwagang Katipunan (later
renamed Bulwagang Gat Antonio Villegas) of the Manila City Hall in 1968. On April 8, 1996, then-
National Museum director Gabriel S. Casal designated the work as a National Cultural Treasure. The
artwork was damaged as a result of plumbing issues at Manila City Hall. The artwork was requested
to be restored by then-Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim with assistance from the National Museum and
funding from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority. The artwork was removed
in 2013 for restoration work, which was completed in 2015 and relocated to the National Museum
of Fine Arts. Filipino Struggles Through History, also known as the History of Manila, is a series of
paintings depicting various events in Philippine history. It is made up of ten canvas panels that
measure 2.7 meters (8.9 ft) high and 79.4 meters (260 ft) wide. [Seven of the panels are exhibited
at the National Museum of Fine Arts' Old Senate Session Hall, depicting the history of Manila from
the historical Tondo period to the end of the American colonial era in 1946. The last three panels
are exhibited at the same museum's Vicente and Carmen Fabella Hall, depicting then-Mayor
Antonio Villegas' vision for the city of Manila.
