1. When the listener already knows which thing we are talking about because it was mentioned
before or because there's only one of them.
I saw a good film yesterday. The film was about a woman who was travelling around the world.
We went to the zoo and saw the kangaroos. (These are the particular kangaroos in that zoo – not
kangaroos in general.)
When we talk about things in general, we normally use a plural or uncountable noun with no article.
1. I’m going to have two desserts – fruit salad and slice of carrot cake.
2. Did you know that there’____ restaurant near here where __waiters sing while you eat?
3. You can get best cookies in Manhattan here!
4. ‘Can I have glass of water, please?’ ‘Of course. Would you like still or
sparkling?’
5. What time are we having lunch? I’m hungry.
6. Did you stay at home in the holidays, or did you go away somewhere?
7. I usually go food shopping once week.

Snails
Have you ever picked up a/the snail? A/The snail is one of –/the most common creatures you can
