Introduction

Course: CE 651 Design of Steel and Timber Structure


Credit hour: 4 hrs. Theory (60 contact hours)
2 hrs. Tutorial (30 contact hours)
Session: 3rd Year, 2nd Part

Objective and Outcome of the Course

- To provide knowledge and skill in the design of different elements of simple steel structures
using rolled steel sections by Limit State Design Methods
- To provide basic knowledge and skill in the design of different elements of timber structures
using structural timber by Working Stress Design Method
- To prepare the students for advanced analysis and design of complex steel and timber
structures

After successful completion of all the learning units and fulfilling the requirements of the course,
students

− Will know the Limit State and Working Stress Design Method of steel and timber structure.
− Will know the structural steel and timber and their characteristics
− Will know the members/components of steel and timber structures and their structural
behavior
− Will be able to design the structural members of timber structures by Working Stress Design
Method
− Will be able to design the structural members of steel structures by Limit State Design
Method
− Will be capable to use the acquired knowledge in real design practice

Delivery of the Course

Course/Subject will be delivered by the course teacher as given below. Course teacher will play role
of teacher/lecturer and facilitator. In the deliverance of course, all necessary requirements and

tasks/inputs of the course will be covered as per course plan and by using interactive and active
learning methods. Students will be insisted/motivated to actively participate in all class activities.
During the entire session, there will be lectures, interactive class/group discussion, individual
presentation, problem solving class.
Interaction and discussions in the classrooms will be effectively complimented with well-designed
assignments. For the purpose, design assignments will be given to each student and make the
students oblique to complete assignment independently and timely.

Evaluation/Assessment of Students

The students’ academic performance will be evaluated/assessed on the basis of internal assessment
and final exam. In this course/subject, weightage of final exam is 80 % and internal assessment is
20% of total marks. Continuous assessments are carried out for internal assessment/evaluation of
students. Criteria for internal assessment of the students will be as follow.
