CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Globally, in China the outbreak of covid 19 virus has been in a total

risk. Through a couple of months, it has turned out as we called global

pandemic in which thousands are affected. Everything has changed, not just

for the economies and health system but also to the educational mode of the

students wherein teachers can provide the students a learning material

(Quinones,2021).

In the Philippines, teachers experienced the current situation of being

in the new normal modality. They are the one who provide the modules for the

students so that the learners will have the learning tool at home while no can

allowed to go to school (Tria ,2020).

Locally, In Lorenzo S. Sarmiento Sr. National High School teachers

invade the modular modality for the learners most especially in General

Academic Strand students. The learners may ask assistance from the teacher

via email, telephone, text message/instant messaging among others. Some

teachers doing there blended learning for the students so that they will have

the clear knowledge if they confused the lessons.

However, I have not come across any studies that specifically

discuss the various type of lived experiences of the teachers during this

pandemic although there are some studies, but it is lack and I want to fill that

gap. Furthermore, this study will provide relevant concepts that would

possibly give an insight to the academic community.


Research Questions:

This phenomenological study seeks the following:

1. What are the experiences that the teachers encountered in new

normal modalities?

2. How did the teachers cope with the situation of being in the new

normal modalities?

3. What insight can you give of being engaged in new normal

modalities?

Purpose of the study

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the

quality of existing modular learning as the primary tool for the teachers to give

the students for them to do their learning during Covid-19 pandemic. The

focus of this study was to explore the lived experienced of teachers in the new

normal modalities. The findings of this study may contribute to the literature

on new normal mode in terms of giving a good quality assurance. The results

should hopefully enable institutions offering good quality of distance learning

during this pandemic and evaluate their programs based on the findings and

the recommendations in this study.

Significance of the study

As a the researcher, I assure that this phenomenological study would

create a great impact on the institution, especially to the teachers who are

currently experience the distance learning this pandemic as well as to spread

invariably the educational system. It is through this study that we will be able
to obtain information about those said students having their best and

undesirable experience, their emotions, hardships, achievements dedication

and commitment, as well as the different problems that they met while

learning in the new normal modality and to how they cope with these

unfavorable. Furthermore, student’s beliefs and attitudes towards the new

normal education and learning play as an important role in distance learning.

Moreover, the advantages of this study would be beneficial to the

following:

1. Department of Education. It can benefit our study by analyzing

the psychological and behavioral factors of the students in order for them to

adjust to the issues. The result of our study will help the students to look

forward to studies.

2. School Administration. They will also gain knowledge in our

study since they will be the ones who will facilitate the school ordinance of a

certain institution. Besides, the school administration will be able to introduce

new ideas and approaches in their school with greater receptivity and have a

better relationship between teachers and students during this pandemic.

3. Teachers. They will benefit from our study since they are the ones

who will help the students to clarify their perception towards the quality of

modular education and for them to do their duty as well.

4. Students. They will benefit the way to clear their thoughts and

enhance their knowledge, clarifies confusion and to learn more on this issue.

Also, they will be able to think better for approaching challenges that they

might be encounter.
5. Future researchers. They will also benefit from our study. It will

serve as a guide in making qualitative research about the student’s

perspective. Therefore, future researchers will gain greater knowledge

regarding this study.

Scope and Limitations

This phenomenology study will be delimiting and aim at investigating

various factors of distance learning of every student in secondary school, and

to their coping strategies to ensure the rivet in every academe. We will pick

fourteen teachers- participants in senior high school, seven females and

seven males, in Lorenzo S. Sarmiento Sr. National High School, Region 11,

and Province of Davao De Oro, Philippines.

Nonetheless, we acknowledge the debilitation of this study which may

cluster the absence of specification in any experiences. In short period of time

in conducting this study, widening of topic may cause a lot of time that may

conflict the presenting of complete resolution in this study. In addition, we

cannot guarantee a perfect study. Thus, this topic will just give a background

essential of the modular learning and the reasons behind this phenomenon.
