QUESTION 1
(PO1, CO1, C2, C2, C2, C4, C4)

a) Classify whether the following processes are batch, continuous, or semibatch, and
transient or steady state:

i) Roasted chicken is being cooked inside a pressure cooker

(2 marks)

ii) A medication fluid inside a syringe and needle is being injected into a patient’s arm

(2 marks)

b) An equimolar liquid mixture of benzene and toluene enters a distillation unit at a rate
of 800 mol/h. The top product leaving the column contains 80 mol% benzene (benzene-
rich phase). The molar flow rate of the bottom stream leaving the column is thrice the
flow rate of the benzene-rich phase. Then, this bottom stream enters a second
distillation column in which the top product leaving the column contains 80 mol%
toluene (toluene-rich phase). The waste stream leaving the bottom of the second
column is of unknown composition with twice the flow rate of the toluene-rich stream.

i) Draw a completely labelled flowchart of the process.

(4 marks)

ii) Determine the molar flow rates for the benzene-rich stream and the bottom stream
leaving the first distillation column
(4 marks)

iii) Determine the molar flow rates of the toluene-rich stream and the waste stream
composition leaving the second column.
(4 marks)

QUESTION 2
(PO1, CO1, C2, C2, C3, C4, C3, C4)

A mixture of fuel containing propane and butane is burned in pure oxygen. The combustion
product consists of 47.4 mole% water, carbon dioxide and oxygen gas, where the mole
fraction of oxygen gas is 45% of that of carbon dioxide. Assume 225 mol of combustion
product as the basis of calculation.

a) Write stoichiometry equations for the reactions.

(2 marks)
b) Draw a completely labelled flowchart of the process.
(2 marks)
c) Determine the degree of freedom (DOF)
(2 marks)
d) Calculate all unknown flowrates and molar fraction.
(6 marks)

e) Determine the molar composition of the fuel.

(2 marks)
f) Calculate the percentage of excess oxygen, O2.
(4 marks)

QUESTION 3
(PO1, CO1, C3, C4, C2, C2, C5)

a) Saturated steam is produced by adiabatically expanding a stream of 1000 kg/h of steam

at 10 bar and 400oC to 0.5 bar in a turbine. As soon as the steam exits the turbine, it is
cooled to produce saturated liquid at 0.5 bar. The flow diagram of the process is shown
below: [Given references: H2O (liquid, 0.01°C, 0.00611 bar)]

superheated steam Saturated steam Saturated liquid

M1= 1000 kg/h Turbine Cooler
M2= 1000 kg/h M3= 1000 kg/h
P1= 10 bar P2= 0.5 bar P3= 0.5 bar
T1= 400oC T2= 81.3 oC T3= 81.3 oC

W Q

i) Calculate the work produced by a turbine (in kW)

(5 marks)
ii) Determine the heat loss in the cooling process (in kW)
(4 marks)

b) The combustion of Ethane is conducted in a reactor. Ethane is fed into a reactor at

300 mol/s and 60oC. Meanwhile, 900 mol/s O2 and 2500 mol/s N2 are fed into the
same reactor at 400oC. The products gas emerges at 1500oC and found to contain 60
mol/s of Ethane, 2500 mol/s of N2, 60 mol/s O2, 480 mol/s CO2 and 720 mol/s H2O.

C2H6 (v) + 7/2 O2 (v) 2CO2 (v) + 3H2O (v)

i) Draw and label the flow diagram of the above process

(2 marks)
ii) Compute the percent conversion of Ethane
(2 marks)

iii) Evaluate the rate at which heat (kJ) must be transferred to or from the reactor by
using the heat of formation method (ΔĤf)
(13 marks)
