ACTIVITY 11B

The Spiritual Self

Instruction: List down at least ten (10) different spiritual practices, rituals, and
beliefs that are practiced in your community (e.g., burial, thanksgiving rituals,
etc.). Discuss how it is conducted and include the purpose of each ritual.

1. Prayer
It is the most common practice that most of us are doing. This is our way to
communicate with god. Praying makes us feel safe and this is done by talking with god
with a sincere heart.

2. House blessing
It is a common tradition in our country which is done before people live in a newly built
house. A priest will bless the whole house with holy water to drive away all the negative
spirits.

3. 40 days after death tradition

This tradition is done to commemorate the death of a person. It is also done because
this will help the spirit to go where it should be. This is done through praying different
prayers at repetitive times.

4. Palm Sunday
This is called Palm Sunday because it is done by spreading the branches and leaves of
the palm where the statue of Jesus will enter Jerusalem on the day of Sunday.

5. Wearing red and orange on a burial

These colors are believed to express happiness, which is why these colors are not
suggested to wear when you are going to burial because they will think that you are
happy in a midst of mourning.

6. Singing religious songs

Singing a religious song is also a type of praying or talking to god. Through singing, we
can also communicate with God.

7. Superstition
This is a practice which is very common in provinces. It is a belief or way of behaving
that is based on fear of the unknown and faith in magic or luck.

8. Fumigation
It is a house cleansing using incense which is a small rock-like thing that is burned to
create smoke and make sure that every side of the house will be smoked by it to drive
away the bad spirits inside and outside the house.
9. Blood-letting
It is often done when a person plans to build a house they will first kill a chicken or goat
and let its blood drip around the site where they plan to build their home because it is
believed to drive away evil spirits and to prevent accidents from happening to the
workers building the house.

10. Body cleansing

It is done by using a white egg, clear glass, and clean water when a person is not feeling
well. While holding a white egg, a person will pray on it and after praying the person will
crack the egg on the glass with water and the bad spirit that’s making the person not
feel well will be seen in the glass. And the person who is not feeling well will take a sip
of the glass.
