Background
Industrial Training refers to the learners’ work experience gained in Occupational Safety
and Health (OSH) field either at the private or government organisation. In Open
University Malaysia (OUM), all BOSHM learners’ MUST complete at least 25 weeks of
Industrial Training course with 25-credit value, as one of the requirements prior to
graduation. Therefore, the Industrial Training is split into TWO courses; XBIT4112 and
XBIT4213. XBIT4112 focusing on the area of OSH legal requirements; hazard identification,
risk assessment and risk control (HIRARC); and OSH management system (OSHMS), while
XBIT4213 focusing on the area of emergency response system; chemical health risk
assessment (CHRA); and accident investigation.
Learners should note that the Industrial Training is an essential component in the
curriculum for Bachelor of OSH in order to meet with the programme learning outcomes
(PLOs) set by Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA). It provides the exposure to OSH
practices and strengthens the development of OSH competencies.
Learners are required to start their Industrial Training before first tutorial in the current
semester and registered for as below:
1) XBIT4112 = 12 Weeks@3 month
2) XBIT4213 = 13 weeks@ 3 month 1
weeks Total = 25 weeks@6 month 1
weeks
If any learner is not able to complete the Industrial Training within the prescribed
period or exceed two semesters, he/she will be given an F grade and need to be re-
registered again. (Kindly Refer Attachment_Pekeliling Pendaftar) At OUM, Industrial
Training is facilitated by administrative assistant from the Research and Project
Management Unit (RPMU) and coordinated by Training Advisor from Cluster of Applied
Sciences (CAS).
1.2 Objective
The objective of this Industrial Training courses are to demonstrate learners’ competencies
in the area of OSH legal requirements; hazard identification, risk assessment and risk
control (HIRARC); OSH management system (OSHMS); emergency response system;
chemical health risk assessment (CHRA); and accident investigation.
Learners’, who are due to undergo XBIT4112 and XBIT4213 courses at the end of the
BOSHM’s programme, need to apply and obtain an industrial placement on their own
initiative. If required, an undertaking letter from OUM can be obtained from the
Administrative Assistant to support the application for the placement. Once placement is
obtained, learners MUST submit a registration form to RPMU. RPMU will assist to get
approval from Training Advisor before students proceed for the industrial training.

It is strictly required that the student is responsible for obtaining an industrial placement for
a minimal period of 25 working weeks (consecutively) and 1000 working hours.
In a situation without any public holidays and leaves taken by the student during the
training period, the requirement above should normally be fulfilled according to the
following calculation:
However, if there are any public holidays and leaves taken by the student during the training
period, they should not be counted as working hours.
Therefore, in this case, the student must compensate any shortage of working hours in order
to fulfil the minimal period of 25 working weeks (consecutively) and the 1000 working hours
as required above.

1.5 Industrial Training Placement Approval
For an Industrial Training to be valid, the proposed placement must be approved by the
Training Advisor BEFORE the training starts. The approval is judged based on the relevancy
of training plan to be conducted, workplace attached and training duration.
Thus, learners are required to submit the Training Registration Form as shown in Appendix
E. Kindly refer to the announcement at MyVle (Cluster Annoucement). The RPMU will
process the form and will notify the learners’ via email about their registration status.
Kindly refer to Figure 1. for further details of Registration procedure.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Student shall inform the administrative assistant of RPMU IMMEDIATELY if there is any
change on the placement.
The industrial training reports for both courses XBIT4112 and XBIT4213 should be prepared
and submit according to the given structure. The reports will act as evidences to display the
implementation of the industrial training. The reports should also reflect learners’ ability in
addressing their skills in communication and problem solving of OSH.
Learners should seek advice from their employers to ensure that no confidential materials
are attached in the report. The student should be able to present the report to the
employers if needed. Any references made in preparation of the report should be using
standard APA 6th referencing formats. Kindly refer to the REPORT WRITING GUIDELINE as
given in APPENDIX A to prepare their report.
The industrial training will be evaluated by Internal Assessor through a monthly report
