6th Grade ELA Syllabus

Objectives:
The objectives of this course are as follows:

● The students will determine a theme and/or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular
details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

● Students will be able to differentiate between central ideas and themes within a text.

The due dates for this course as follows:
● Dec. 2nd - Pear Deck Exercise (Interactive Tool #4)
● Dec. 5th - Blooket Quiz (Interactive Tool #3)
● Dec. 6th - Quizlet Review (Interactive Tool #2)
● Dec. 9th - Main Idea and Theme Nearpod (Interactive Screencast Lesson)
● Dec. 13th - Kahoot Quiz (Interactive Tool #1)
● Dec. 16th - Central Idea and Theme Quiz (Online Quiz)

Assessment:
In this course learning objectives will be assessed through the following methods:
● Diagnostic assessments, check-in quizzes to collect progression.
● Summative assessments, unit tests and major quizzes.
● Formative assessments, weekly reviews about topics.
● Small 2 week quizzes about topics.

Vocabulary will be given on each Monday and quizzes will be given every other Friday.

Remediation:
Remediation will be offered by office hours, before/after schools via appointment, or on as needed basis during
morning time or outside time. If help is needed, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If students need a retake of an assessment they must meet with me to complete a Blooket review before retest.

Grading Criteria:
A=100-90 B=89-80 C=79-70 D=69-60 F= Below 60

Grading weight:
Assignments: 15%
Essays: 15%
Quizzes: 35%
Projects: 25%
Homework: 10%

Feedback:
Feedback will be provided:
● Students will receive a progress report every 4 weeks.
● Report cards will go out every 9 weeks.
● Teacher feedback will be given within the assignments database (Google Classroom) through FlipGrid for
audio and video feedback, Mote for audio feedback and Bitmoji stickers for visual feedback.

Expectations:
● Assignments will be graded within 7 days of completion
● Unit Folders will be updated each week with what students have to complete each week along with what they are
learning.
● Meeting via appointment made by parent or guardian.

Social Media Tools:


Social Media will be used to connect students, parents, and the school in a productive manner. Tools that will be used in this
classroom include:
● Facebook: To share reminders about school events, progression within the classroom, upcoming assignments, and
weekly reminders with parents.
● Instagram: To share classroom progression online to parents, students, and school community.
● Remind: To send out daily/weekly reminders about assignments, quizzes, homework, field trips, meetings, etc.
○ Also allows teachers to have instant text-like messaging between teachers and parents.

Students
Expectations:
Students will be expected to:
● Come to class prepared with materials.
● Show up to class on time.
● Complete and turn in assignments by the due date posted.
● Complete any missing work if previously absent.

Behavior Criteria:
Students will be expected to:
● Respect themselves and others.
● Respect class time and materials within the classroom.
● Communicate respectfully and purposefully with teacher and peers.
● Raise hand prior to blurting out in class.
