ABOUT DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mechanical Engineering, established in 1985, is one of the pioneering departments of SRM IST. The
present faculty strength is 115, of which around 50% are with PhD, and the rest are on the verge of completion. More
than 1200+ research papers have been published in leading international journals with high impact factor and more than
1000 papers have been presented in international conferences. The department is functionally divided into three broad
areas of specialization: (i) Design (ii) Manufacturing and (iii) Thermal. The department also offers Doctoral programs in
these three areas of specializations. The National Board of Accreditation has accredited the Mechanical Engineering
programme for six years, from the year 2021 to 2027. The B.Tech. – Mechanical Engineering program at the
Kattankulathur campus is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.
The department offers Semester Abroad Program for our UG students in which they will be given the opportunity of a
lifetime to spend a semester at some of the best universities in the world, such as – Carnegie Mellon, Northeastern
University, SUNNY Buffalo, University of Wisconsin, UC Berkeley, George Mason, New Hampshire, Lille Catholic
University, University of Western Australia, Western Ontario, Queen’s University and many others.
Vision: To impart knowledge to our students in an ambience of Humanity, Wisdom, Intellect, Creativity of Innovation,
in order to nurture them culturally and Ethically rich professionals with bright future.
Mission #1. To impart quality education to produce mechanical engineers and enhance their skills to become world
renowned professionals.
Mission #2. To establish Centers of Research Excellence to inculcate research acumen in faculty and students on the
areas like; machining, biomechanics, bio-fuels, composites, and energy.
Mission #3. To provide state-of-the-art education and training programs to the faculty and student fellowship.
ABOUT THE FDP
We live in the age of data, where everything around us is connected to a data source, and everything in our lives is digitally
recorded. To intelligently analyze these data and develop the corresponding smart and automated applications, the
knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI), mainly, machine learning (ML), is the key. Various types of machine learning
algorithms such as supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and reinforcement learning, exist in the area. Besides, the
deep learning, which is part of a broader family of machine learning methods, can intelligently analyze the data on a large
scale. ML usually provides systems with the ability to learn and enhance from experience automatically without being
specifically programmed and is generally referred to as the most popular latest technologies in the fourth industrial
revolution (Industry 4.0). The applicability of machine learning techniques in various real-world application domains,
such as agriculture, medical diagnosis, robotics, computer vision, cybersecurity systems, smart cities, healthcare,
e-commerce, and many more. The ultimate success of a machine learning-based solution and corresponding applications
mainly depends on both the data and the learning algorithms. Hence, this FDP is devoted to enhancing the knowledge of
Machine learning in real-world or multi-disciplinary engineering applications through lectures from eminent
professionals.
Program Outcome
Program Outcome 4: Conduct investigation of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods
including Machine learning analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid
predictions for the particular applications.
• ML tools – SVM, Random Forest, Decision tree, KNN, Naive Bayes Classifier & K-Means Clustering
