Medium and Techniques

‣ A MEDIUM IS THE MATERIAL THAT ARTISTS USE TO CREATE

THEIR ART.
‣ THE PLURAL OF MEDIUM IS MEDIA.
‣ ONE PIECE OF ART CAN BE MADE OF ONE MEDIUM OR
SEVERAL MEDIA.

EXAMPLE:
‣ OIL ON CANVAS
‣ TEMPERA ON WOOD
‣ INK ON SILK
The Artist and His Medium
‣ Artistic medium is a term that is used by artists and art critics
to refer to that out of which a work of art or, more generally, a
particular art form, is made.
‣ Ink, glass, watercolor, oil paint, tempera, bronze, and marble .

The Artist and His Technique

‣ Technique is the manner in which the artist controls his
medium to achieve the desired effects. Apparently, artist’s
differ from one another in technique even if they use the same
medium.
Medium of the Visual Arts
‣ Visual arts are those arts that are perceived with our eyes. The
most common visual arts are painting, sculpture, and
architecture.

Painting
‣ Painting is the art of creating meaningful effects on a flat
surface by the use of pigments.
‣ Different mediums are used in painting.
‣ The materials of the painter are pigments applied to wet
plaster, canvas, wood, or paper.
Mediums of
Painting
Watercolor

Watercolor as a medium is
difficult to handle because it
is difficult to produce warm
and rich tones but it invites
brilliance and a variety of
hues.
Fresco

This is painting on the moist

plaster surface with colors
ground in water or lime
water mixture. The colors
dry into plaster, and the
picture becomes a part of
the wall. Most Frescos must
MICHELANGELO’S be done quickly because it’s
“THE CREATION OF ADAM”
an exacting medium
Tempera

‣ Tempera paints are mineral

pigments mixed with egg yolk or egg
white and ore. They are often used
as binder due to its film forming
properties and rapid drying rate and
corrections are difficult to make.
‣ Usually done in wooden panel.
‣ Advantage of tempera is its
luminous tone, the colors being
clear and beautiful.
Pastel

Pastel sticks or crayons consist of

powdered pigment combined with
a binder. The exact composition
and characteristics of an
individual pastel stick depend on
the type of pastel and the type and
amount of binder used. It also
varies by individual
manufacturer.
Oil Painting

Oil painting is one of the most

expensive art and one of the
oldest mediums still regularly
used in art. Moreover, pigments
are mixed with linseed oil as a
binder and applied to the canvas.

LEONARDO DA VINCI’S
“MONA LISA”
Acrylic

Acrylic is a medium used

popularly by contemporary
painters because of the
transparency and quick-drying
characteristics of water color
and the flexibility of oil
combined.
Mosaic

‣ Mosaic art is a picture made of

small pieces of inlaid colored
stones or glass called “tesserae”.
Which most often are cut into
squares glued on a surface with
plaster or cement.
‣ The pieces are usually solid and
long-lasting, which is a unique
SANDRA BRYANT’S
feature.
“AUTUMN LANDSCAPE”
Stained Glass

Stained glass as an
artwork is common in
Gothic cathedrals and
churches. This is made by
combining small pieces of
colored class which are
held together by bands of
AUGSBURG CATHEDRAL,
LATE 11TH CENTURY
lead.
Tapestry

‣ Tapestry is an artwork that

uses fabric consisting of a wrap
upon which colored threads are
woven by hand to produce a
design.
‣ Hung on the walls of palaces
and in cathedrals on festive
occasions.
CHARLES LE BRUN’S
“HISTOIRE DU ROI”
Drawing

‣ Drawing is done on paper

using pencil, pen, and ink,
or charcoal.

‣ Shading can also be used

to make drawing more life-
like and realistic.
LEONARDO DA VINCI'S
HEAD OF A WOMAN (LA
SCAPIGLIATA)
Bistre

‣ Bistre is a brown pigment

extracted from the soot of wood,
and often used in pen and wash
drawings.

‣ Frequently used in conjunction

with pen and ink drawings as a
wash.
REMEMBRANDT'S
“YOUNG WOMAN AT HER TOILETTE”
Crayons

Crayons are pigments bound

by wax and compressed into
painted sticks used for
drawing especially among
children in the elementary
grades.
Charcoal

Charcoal is used in representing

broad masses of light and
shadow. Like drawing pencils,
soft charcoal produces the
darkest value, while the darkest
produces the lightest tone.

LEONEL CUNHA'S
"THREE"
Silverpoint

The artist has a technique of

drawing with silver stylus on
specially prepared paper to
produce a thin grayish line
that was popular during the
Renaissance period.
Printmaking

‣ A print is anything printed on

a surface that is a direct result
from a duplicating process.
‣ Advantage: making many
copies of the original artwork.
‣ Woodcut, engraving, relief,
intaglio, and stencil process.
Printmaking: Woodcut
‣ This is made from a piece of wood. Woodcuts can
be identified because of their firm, clear and black
lines.

Printmaking: Engraving
‣ This is the art of forming designs by cutting and
corrosion by acids.
‣ The lines of the design are cut into a metal plate
with ink and transferred from the plate to the
paper. Example, "The Enraged Musicians".
Printmaking: Relief
‣ Relief painting involves cutting away from a block
of wood or linoleum the parts of the parts of the
design that the artist wants to be seen, leaving the
portion of the third dimension.

Printmaking: Intaglio
‣ Intaglio is a printing process in which the design or
the text is engraved into the surface of the place and
the ink is transferred to paper and an incised line
can be easily noticed on the artwork.
Printmaking: Stencil Painting
‣ It is a process which involves cutting of the design on
special paper cardboard or metal sheet in such a way that
when the ink is rubbed over it, the design is reproduced
on the surface.
