What I need to know
What’s New
Invertebrates are classified into eight larger groups: Poriferans, Cnidarians, Annelids,
Mollusks, Echinoderms, Nematodes, Platyhelminthes and Arthropods each of which has
certain characteristics.
Look and study figure 1. These are some of the animals without backbone.
Do you know how are they classify? And what are their distinguishing characteristics?
Let’s explore and do the activities in the next page.
1
What is It!
Invertebrates come in all different shapes and sizes. Some can be seen only
through a microscope. Invertebrates are classified into eight larger groups:
Poriferans, Cnidarians, Annelids, Mollusks, Echinoderms, Nematodes,
Platyhelminthes and Arthropods. Each of which has certain characteristics,
QUESTIONS:
1. What is an invertebrate?
2. What kind of invertebrate is an ant?
3. How many percent of all animal species
on Earth are invertebrates?
4. How many jointed legs an ant has?
5. How many classifications of
invertebrates?

ACTIVITY 3
Classification of Invertebrates and Its Distinguishing Characteristics
Directions: Read and study the paragraphs & figure 3, then answer the
questions below.
Additional Facts
• Invertebrates are ectotherms (cold-blooded): they warm their
bodies by absorbing heat from their surroundings. Most invertebrates live
in water or spend at least some part of their life in water.
• Some groups of invertebrates live on land. Common examples
include worms, insects and spiders. These invertebrates need to have
special structures to deal with life on land.
• Most invertebrates change form as they grow, going through a
. process known as metamorphosis.
4
-two body openings
I -simple nervous system
-examples: earthworms and leeches
N ANNELIDS
-jointed legs
V -more than one body section
-exoskeleton
E -examples: corals, sea anemones and jelly fish
CNIDARIANS
R
-soft-bodied with external or internal shells
-have a foot or tentacles
A -most have shells
-examples: oysters, squid and snails
MOLLUSKS

1. The eight large group of invertebrates are Poriferans, Cnidarians, Annelids,
Mollusks, Echinoderms, Nematodes, Platyhelminthes and Arthropods
2. Water
3. They do not have a backbone.
They are multicellular. They have no cell walls, like all other animals.
They reproduce by two reproductive cells, or gametes, coming together to
produce a new organism of their species.
4. Metamorphosis
5. They reproduce by two reproductive cells or gametes to produce a new
organism of their species.
