Chapter 1
Executive Summary

“What comes up must come down, and what comes down will come back up.” A
quote that explains failure plays a big part in the journey of becoming successful in the
world of entrepreneurship. Throughout the years, studies have found that only 80% of
businesses operate in the 1st year and only 50% still operate after 5 years. Even, only
53% of entrepreneurs are happy with owning their own business. (“What percentage of
Entrepreneurs are successful? (2019)). Therefore, entrepreneurship is a complicated
line of work; it is the perseverance that defines a true entrepreneur; which is what Adriel
Benedicto Hario, a successful entrepreneur was able to achieve throughout his career.
Emerging from multiple challenges, Adriel Benedicto Hario is the founder of
Grinergi Indonesia. Every year, Indonesia's electricity needs increase by 7%. The latest
research shows that only 12% comes from renewable energy sources; the rest is
sourced from coal (55%), gas (26%), and oil (7%) ((Walton, Kate (2020). These energy
usage plumated Indonesia’s air pollution and if not taken care of, the country’s future is
at stake. Therefore, this issue struck Adriel’s awareness and he decided to focus on
operating a company in the Renewable Biomass Energy Industry. As mentioned, the
company manufactures wood pellets to replace fossil fuel energy. In hopes to satisfy
their Vision and Mission, Adriel envisioned becoming a leading company within the
country; whilst on a mission to cover basic local and international needs of energy with
manufacturing consistent products.
However, growing in an industry that is not yet accepted in a country like
Indonesia poses a huge challenge that Adriel Benedicto Hario must face to become a
leading position in the industry. Therefore, this paper focuses on thorough development
in the Entrepreneurial and business spectrum of the founder, Adriel Benedicto Hario.
Chapter 2
Background and Views

Born and raised in Indonesia, Adriel Benedicto Hario is the eldest of only two
brothers. Dan Hario, a well known professional photographer, explained that growing up
Adriel was rather surrounded in an artistic environment than entrepreneurial. Therefore,
school then became an outlook of developing his entrepreneurial skills.
Adriel Hario’s educational journey depicts a trait of curiosity. Earning a Bachelor’s
degree in Business Management, Adriel graduated from Prasetya Mulya Business
School. Even so, Adriel’s performance was hardly decent; passing grades were
obtained enough to complete most occuring modules. In the interview, he quoted an
Indonesian saying “Bawa 5 temen lo dan gw tau diri lo siapa”- translated “Bring 5
friends and I know who you are.” According to Adriel Hario, he argues that wisely
segmenting friends plays a crucial part in networking than education itself; when one is
surrounded by peers, he / she is replicating their images onto his / herself. Even so, this
issue derives from the industry he / she aims to pursue; one image can be positive and
negative to the other, hence, it is solely on his / her freedom to choose. Therefore,
Adriel made a decision to indulge in his personal, suitable area. Despite Adriel’s lack of
performance, he decided to focus on competitions on creating a business plan; Adriel
and his team was awarded 1st place and sent abroad to continue the competition. In
other words, creativity, exploration, and determination comes as Entrepreneurial
characteristics.
Chapter 3
Entrepreneurship Evolution

When asked, “what motivated you to be an entrepreneur?” Adriel answered, “it is

a call to be an entrepreneur” prior to discussing its current venture. Prior to venturing
into a new industry, Adriel believed that the essential key of becoming an entrepreneur
is to help those in need and that is to create a field for others to work. Other than that, to
be able to take a “calculated” risk is a success aspect in the career. Operating in
Renewable Biomass Energy, Adriel Hario attempts values in Underserved Markets
Driven; Indonesia consists of only 2% of companies venturing in the industry, meaning
results can be perceived in a long range rather in the current days (Indonesia Energy
Sector Assessment Strategy and Road Map (2020) . After turning a blind eye to multiple
changes made in its business model, Adriel was able to convince investors after nearly
2 years in an industry that could play a big future for Indonesia; it shows its tenacity and
passion. It is the capability of Execution Intelligence that Adriel persevered through
first-hand obstacles, depicting a success for the future of the country.
One of the greatest challenges Grinergi Indonesia faces is the loss of demand in
the midst of lockdown. Given the economic difficulties, the market lessened its purchase
to eliminate cost; Adriel Hario experienced major difficulties, going into telemarketing.
He explained calling approximately 20 clients, in an attempt to maintain relationships
while marketing its products. Despite the inefficiency, it resolved this temporary setback
that maintained the company’s sales before finding a new resolution, which projects
leadership upon Adriel’s stakeholders. Within the challenge, it was said that Grinergi
Indonesia had proposed an association within competitors with the aim to complement
each other’s market. Carrying a purpose to venture in the energy industry is a
technological invention emerging into the market, but particular output may be beneficial
or plunging. Upon other consideration, the possible major downfall is the lack in
obtaining Adriel’s place in the market; clients may be more invested in the competitor’s
products, those that are less in price than Grinergi Indonesia’s products. Even so, the
success falls upon Adriel Hario’s ability to withstand any challenges of a prospect he
created for the company.
Chapter 4
Key Lesson and Conclusion

Throughout the interview, it is visible that Adriel Hario is involved in the

innovation culture. When asked “what does it mean to be an entrepreneur?” Adriel
concludes that to be an entrepreneur means to have the willingness in every aspect of
his / her own business. He emphasizes the importance of acquiring calculated risk;
taking a risk that comes with precaution, and in Grinergi Indonesia’s case, countless
Research & Development were conducted in product, market, marketing, or in other
segmentation to prevent any major failures. Therefore, in an attempt to develop for the
longevity of Grinergi Indonesia Adriel Hario plans to manufacture solar panels on grid
powered by the company’s invention of wood pellets. Along the way, he does not only
prove those who did not believe but he continues to grow to fulfill the future of
Indonesia.
After conducting an interview, Adriel Benedicto Hario is a progressing
Entrepreneur. However, the measures that were taken came highly in success rather
than failure. To be able to construct a business model is to have leadership. Therefore,
a key lesson to be a successful entrepreneur is Leadership, Social skill, and Technical
skill. Hence, entrepreneurs are made and not born; it is the willingness to commit,
fulfilling needs not only for his / herself but rather for others. Other than that, to be an
entrepreneur is to not be idealistic; be straight on market’s need, advise a product that
is on demand or could create a change. And as mentioned previously, true
entrepreneurship is defined by his / her perseverance to strive in all circumstances
when creating a business. Lastly, the biggest advice Adriel Hario gave was to
understand that luck is made; it is a combination of preparation, attitude, and providing
opportunity. Those who are eager to become an entrepreneur must understand to
always be realistic but don't be afraid to dream big, don't become an entrepreneur solely
for profit; there should be an occurring reason where you can stretch.
I have learned that to be an entrepreneur is to make a change. An entrepreneur
doesnt only care for oneself, rather for what is around you. Through this interview, I’m
able to understand how I could become a better entrepreneur in the future and advise
major changes for the success of my business.
