Circuit/System Description
The intake camshaft position actuator oil pressure sensor, located in the cylinder head, is a 3-wire sensor
comprising of a signal circuit, low reference circuit and the 5-volt reference circuit. The engine control module
(ECM) supplies 5 volts to the sensor via the 5-volt reference circuit and provides ground via the low reference
circuit. The ECM monitors the signal circuit to determine the sensor voltage is within the normal operating range of
approximately 1-4 volts. When the intake camshaft position actuator oil pressure is high, the sensor voltage is high
and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. When the intake camshaft position actuator oil pressure is low, the
sensor voltage is low and the ECM senses a low signal voltage. The intake camshaft position actuator oil pressure
sensor is used by the ECM for variable valve lift performance diagnosis.

The ignition voltage is greater than 11 V.
Engine speed is less than 1800 RPM.
Camshaft Actuator duty cycle is less than 5 %
The engine run time is greater than 4 s.
P055C and P055D

DTC P0521, P0522 or P0523 is not set.

The ignition voltage is greater than 11 V.
The ignition switch is in the crank or run position.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P055B

The difference between the engine block oil pressure and cylinder head oil pressure is greater than 130
kPa (19 PSI).
The above condition is present for greater than 2.5 s.
P055C

The ECM detects an open or short to ground in the cylinder head oil pressure sensor signal circuit.
The cylinder head oil pressure sensor reading is less than or equal to 130 kPa (19 PSI)
The above conditions are present for greater than 5 s.
P055D

The ECM detects a short to voltage in the cylinder head oil pressure sensor signal circuit.
The cylinder head oil pressure sensor reading is greater than or equal to 949 kPa (137 PSI)
The above conditions are present for greater than 5 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

P055B, P055C and P055D are type B DTCs.

If P055B is active, low rocker arm lift is disabled and high lift is the default position.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

P055B, P055C and P055D are type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

A low oil level condition may set this DTC. The engine may require an oil change. Inquire with the
customer when the last oil change was performed. You may also monitor the scan tool Engine Oil Life
Remaining parameter. Advise the customer an oil change may be required.
Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft
actuator, or timing chain can cause this DTC to set.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Verify the engine has the correct oil level and pressure. Refer to Oil Pressure Diagnosis and Testing.

If the oil level and the oil pressure are not correct

Repair as necessary

If the oil level and the oil pressure are correct

Verify the difference between the scan tool Engine Oil Pressure and Intake Camshaft Position Actuator Oil
Pressure Sensor is greater than 130 kPa (19 PSI).

If not greater than 130 kPa (19 PSI)

Refer to Symptoms - Engine Mechanical

If greater than 130 kPa (19 PSI)

Verify DTC P0521, P0522 or P0523 is not set.

If any of the DTCs are set

Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle

If none of the DTCs are set

Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the
conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Verify the DTC does not set.

If the DTC sets

Refer to Circuit/System Testing.

If the DTC does not set

All OK.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition Off and all vehicle systems Off, disconnect the harness connector at the cylinder head B37
Engine Oil Pressure Sensor. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down.
2. Test for less than 10 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.

If 10 Ω or greater

1. Ignition Off, disconnect the harness connector at the K20 Engine Control Module.
2. Test for less than 2 Ω in the low reference circuit end to end.

If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.

If less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

If less than 10 Ω

Ignition On.
Test for 4.8–5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.
