Teachers Name: Casey Parry Course Title: Spanish 2 Semester: All

Course Summary:
This is the second course in Spanish instruction. It is designed for students with low intermediate skills in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing the Spanish language. Students will learn to understand spoken Spanish language and to communicate with appropriate verbal or written responses. The sounds of the language will be reviewed and practiced. Grammar and sentence structure will be taught in basic, everyday vocabulary. Cultural themes of the Spanish-speaking world will be interspersed and emphasized throughout the course.

Course Objectives:
A. B. C. D. E. Students will communicate verbally in the Spanish language on a low intermediate level. Students will learn to understand Spanish at a conversational speed. Students will learn Spanish basic to intermediate grammatical and sentence structures. Students will read materials written in Spanish on an intermediate level. Students will continue to strengthen their understanding of Spanish and Hispanic cultures.

Grading Procedure:
Students will be graded on their participation, daily work, and demonstrations of knowledge in the following areas: listening comprehension, pronunciation, reading, structure, writing, and vocabulary. The grades will be assessed in the following manner: Four common Assessments will be given throughout the semester these will be weighted as 40% of the final grade. The remaining 60% of the final grade will come from homework, demonstration grades and participation. Students should spend a minimum of fifteen minutes per evening practicing and reviewing the material they studied during that day. Speaking a foreign language is a skill and must be practiced to increase proficiency. All grades are reported as percentages. The following grade table summarizes the percentage points needed to achieve letter grades7 in this class:

Five (5) daily work or participation grades may be replaced with extra credit assignments if and only if the extra credit assignments are completed at A- quality or better. The extra credit assignments may be corrected until they reach an acceptable quality. These assignments are invariably longer and more involved than the regular day-to-day work in the class. Extra credit may not be used to replace demonstration grades. See the accompanying sheet for extra suggestions.

Make-up Procedure:
All work missed due to an excused absence may be made up without penalty. Students will be allowed a reasonable time, as described in the student handbook (minimum of one day per day of absence). If there are extenuating circumstances, see the teacher on the day of your return. Lengthy projects due on the day on which a student is absent, as a general rule, will be turned before the student is absent or on the day he/she returns. In the case that a student was in attendance when the work was assigned but did not submit it, the work can be submitted for correction and comment, but no grade will be awarded. Work corrected in class is due at the time it is corrected. Work submitted to the teacher for correction is due before 4:00 p.m. on the day it is to be turned in. All tests and quizzes must be made up outside of class timebefore school, after school, or at lunch. No make-up privileges will be given for work missed due to truancy.

Classroom Policies:
1. Demonstrate academic honesty in all of your class work in the following ways a. Do your own workdo not copy assignments or answers b. Do not allow others to copy your work c. Follow teacher directions about using notes on tests, quizzes, projects, test batteries, etc. d. Be truthful about reasons for missing assignments, tests, etc. Academic dishonesty will be handled in accordance with the Idaho Falls High School Academic Honesty policy. 2. Tardies: A student not in his or her seat and ready to go to work when the bell rings is considered tardy. In this class, we will follow the Star Valley High School tardy policy. No one will be allowed to leave the classroom except on an emergency basis. Display the attributes of an accomplished student as listed below: An accomplished student: Is committed to his or her own learning Knows what material he or she will be expected to learn and plans the best way to learn it within the confines of the course Is responsible for monitoring and managing his or her own learning (for example gets makeup work before an absence or immediately on return) Thinks systematically about his or her learning and learns from experience. Sees himself or herself as a contributing member of a learning community. Treat yourself, other class members, visitors, and the instructor with respect. Do the assignments on time and to the very best of your ability. All work will be done in pencil or in dark blue or black ink. Follow MLA heading and page formatting standards. Do your share in committees and learning groups. Seek help from the instructor as soon as you find yourself having trouble with any concept that we are studying or discussing. Create time in your schedule to get the help that you need
