FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION
1. Control
To control is to regulate one’s behaviour. Therefore, when somebody tells you “Stop!”,
basically the person wants you to perform the said act which is to STOP whether you
stop talking, stop moving or stop writing, or stop any action being performed at the
moment.
When a student who is always late in class is given reminders regarding the policy and
regulations of the school when it comes to attendance and punctuality, the behaviour of
the student is being controlled or regulated. The next day, the said student attended the
morning assembly and all his classes. Thus, the behaviour of the student was
controlled.
2. Social Interaction
Connectivity once started with a simple “hi” or “hello”. People communicate to interact
with other people. This is also used to create social relationships, strong bonds,
intimacy, friendship, or any relationship developed out of reaching out to other people.
Liza is a transferee, however, she never felt alone even during the first day of classes
because she reached out to her classmates especially her seatmate. Now, they are best
of friends.
3. Motivation
This communication function intends to encourage people to live life better. Simple
words such as “You can do it!” would matter a lot to somebody who almost lost
confidence to go on with the task. This communication function enables one to lighten a
load and enlighten the spirit towards a a desired output, a short or long-term-goal, or
even develop an inspiration to live a better life.
4. Emotional Expression
“Laugh and the whole world laughs with you” an old saying goes. This communication
function enables one to express one’s emotion. Be it love or hatred, joy or melancholy,
fulfilment or scarcity, all of people’s emotions are expressed according to how one
facilitates his feelings.
5. Information Dissemination
This function of communication enables to disseminate facts, figures, and other data or
information in which people consider before making decisions. Announcements,
implementing rules and regulations of a newly signed bill, company policy, memoranda,
and others similar to this are just a few examples in which people try to identify, weigh
out and evaluate before arriving at decisions and conclusions.
