Marketing Products

Creative packaging and labelling techniques

Every product that is available in the market has its own distinct packaging and
labelling. Packaging and labelling are important in marketability of the product.
In order to succeed in the marketing products, high quality of products should
be considered. Most companies invest time, effort, and resources on their product’s
packaging and labelling, to ensure that the products are designed appropriately,
attractive and distinct. Packaging and labelling are usually considered a part of the
overall “marketing strategy” too.

The three most important functions of packaging are the following: contain
and protect the product, promote the product and facilitate the storage, use, and
convenience of product.

Labelling provides the necessary information about the products such as its
contents, features, instructions as to its usage, and manufacturing information. It
promotes the product with the use of branding, and attractive, colorful marks.

Packaging is the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting

products for distribution, storage, sale and use. It is the activities of designing and
producing the container for a product.

4
Functions and Importance of Packaging

1. Promoting and Selling the Product. Attractive, colorful, and visually appealing
packages have promotional value. A well design package is a powerful selling
device because it helps the product stand out from its competitors.

2. Defining Product Identity. It is use to promote an image such as prestige,

convenience, or status

3. Providing Information. It gives customer useful information on direction for using

the product, its contents, product guarantees and potential hazards.

4. Expressing Customer Needs. When designing packages, companies analyze

customer lifestyles and create packaging that meets their needs for size &
convenience.

5. Ensure Safe Use. The proper packaging helps to eliminate potential injuries or
misuse of a product.

6. Protect the Product. The packaging protects product during shipping, storage
and display. It prevents from tampering, breakage and spoilage.

Common Materials for Packaging

1. Plastic
2. Metal/tin
3. Brick Carton
4. Cardboard

Types of Packaging

1. Primary packaging – the material encloses the product one by one or single pack.

5
2. Secondary packaging – is grouping or putting together the primary packages into
one pack.

3. Tertiary packaging – is used for bulk handling, warehouse storage and transport
shipping. The most common form is a palletized unit load that
packs tightly into containers.

Packaging Procedure for Finished Product

1. Sorting of products according to style, color and size.

2. Putting label and price tags.
3. Folding finished product
4. Packing finished product in cellophane.
5. Sealing the packed products.

6
Labeling is a process of describing the product inside the package in word or short
phrases. The following information should be included in the label of finished product:
brand name or trademark, country origin and physical and chemical composition.

Price Tag is a device attached to a commodity which states the price. It should be
visible, clearly written, with no alteration or erasures of any sort.

PRODUCT MARKETING

Product Marketing is the overall process of conveying a good or service to

customers. It includes defining the scope of the product line, identifying potential
markets for a product, determining optimal pricing for the market, encouraging
potential customers to purchase the product, and finding the best distribution methods
for delivering the product to customers or to sales locations. Advertising is essential in
product marketing.

Free Advertising

When you build a business, the first thing you want to secure is a customer
base. With a decent printer, an answering machine and an average computer, you
can put together a fairly extensive advertising campaign without having to pay for
space. The following are the different types of free advertising:

1. Flyers- The flyer should be brief and to the point, highlighting the services
you offer and providing contact information.

2. Posters- Most supermarkets, public spaces and malls offer free bulletin
board space for announcements and advertisements. This is a hit or miss method, but
you should try to make your poster reasonably visible and have removable tabs that
the customers can present for a discount.

3. Value Additions- This is one of the most powerful selling points for any
product or service. On the surface, value additions are very similar to coupons and
free appraisals, but they are aimed at increasing customer satisfaction and widening
the gap between you and competition

4. Referral Networks- Referral networks are invaluable to a business. This

does not only mean customer referrals, which are encouraged though discounts or
other rewards per referral. This includes business-to-business referrals.

5. Follow-Up- Follow-up questionnaires are one of the best sources of

feedback for how your ad campaign is going.

6. The Internet-It has a big impact when it comes to marketing and also one of
the effective and fast ways of marketing products. You don’t need to have your own
website (but if you have, much better). You can advertise your product on YouTube
and also by means of popular social media like Facebook, twitter and Instagram.

7
TECHNOLOGY-ASSISTED & OTHER MEANS OF PRODUCT MARKETING

What is your favorite social media platform? Can you name them? What are they?

1. Build Awareness

If people don’t know about your business, they can’t become your customers. Social
media boosts your visibility among potential customers, letting you reach a wide
audience by using a large amount of time and effort. And it’s free to create a business
profile on all the major social networks, so you have nothing to lose.

Define what you want to get out of social media to develop a social media strategy.
Do you want new customers to discover your services? Do you hope to bring more
local shoppers into your stores? By keeping your strategy specific, you can determine
which social media channels are the best fit for your business.

8
2. Communicate Authority

Customers are increasingly interest and more discerning about which businesses they
support. Before making a decision, they’ll do a quick search to browse your website
and social media.

Setting up robust profiles that you update frequently with relevant content will build
your brand’s authority and make sure you make a positive first impression through
social media, showing that your business is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and
approachable.

By showing what your business offers and values, you will establish confidence in
potential customers.

3. Show Authenticity

Customers aren’t interested in businesses that publish like corporate-style social

media posts.

Instead, let your brand’s personality shine through in everything you share on social
media. What does your brand voice sound like? How does it represent who you are?
Practice getting your tone just right, whether it’s casual and funny or formal and
friendly. Be true to who you are, not who you think you should be. Followers want to
see real people behind your social profiles.

4. Encourage Engagement

Social channels evolve, constantly releasing new features, and this rapidly changing
environment can be intimidating for some business owners.

But remember you do not have to do everything. Play with new ways to connect with
your audience and give yourself permission to learn as you go.

You can create engaging video content for social media with a simple setup—good
lighting, a smartphone, and a tripod. Also, do a test run before you go live to make
sure your internet connection or hotspot has enough speed to avoid delays and
interruptions.

5. Provide Support

Social platforms have successfully broken-down barriers between companies and

their customers. Now, instead of calling a customer service line, many people turn to
Facebook or Twitter to solve problems or find information.

Develop your reputation as a responsive, caring brand by offering support through

social channels:
 Create a system for tracking customer comments, questions, and complaints
on social media.
 Respond as quickly as possible to questions and concerns.
 Go out of your way to be positive and helpful.

9
 Listen to criticism and make customers feel heard.
 Know when to resolve public conversations in private messages.

6. Grow Affordably

Marketing costs add up, and not every business can afford huge campaigns. But you
can get a lot of value for your money with social media advertising. Your business,
regardless of size or budget, has an opportunity to grow your audience and reach your
objectives through ads on social platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

When building an ad campaign, know who you’re trying to reach and what goal you
want to achieve so you don’t waste any of your budget on unhelpful advertising. Avoid
overly sales ads and opt for content that educates or entertains (or does both at the
same time).

Social media is a crucial part of your business marketing, but it doesn’t have to be
stressful to manage. Take the first step, create a profile, and start engaging with your
customers.

Aside from Social Media Platform, there are also what we call online product selling
website. They are the website intended solely for product selling.
