Reflection on a Critical Event in the Timeline of CoViD-19 in the Philippines

For the past two or more years, our country is on a state of pandemic due to COVID-19. Our
word changes dramatically, people need to live a different life and must adopt to it to survive. The
Philippine government do every necessary thing to ensure the safety and survival the citizen by issuing
warning and preventive methods to COVID-19, but it can’t be denied that they also have done or didn’t
do things that can or can’t help. Our government lack of capabilities to test for possible COVID-19
infected due to limited resources even though they say that the government, or the DOH specifically, that
we have enough resources for testing of COVID-19. Due to this, the government related institution that
prevent the spread of the virus can’t act fast making the spread of the virus fast and too late to detect. In
this article I will talk about why the DOH say that they have enough resource for testing but still have the
test results came out late, why that instead of having guidelines on who and who don’t need to be tested it
should be that all must be tested, and the government hospital and private should have enough staff for
the testing make faster.

The DOH spokesperson Maria Rosario said that the country or government have enough
resources for the testing and having its result came out. But during the early pandemic, backlogs of testing
and test result have piled up leaving our country more vulnerable to faster rate of infection of COVID-19.
The government or the IATF should have made preparation for this kind of problem as they are the one
responsible of it especially the IATF as it is this agency’s job to prevent emerging infectious diseases in
our country. They should have enough manpower and materials to do its job effectively and prepared.
Because of this, people died even before confirming that they have COVID-19 or people infecting others
because they can’t know if already have the virus.

It also should be noted that the DOH that the spokesperson also said that the country don’t need
mass testing. I believe that we need to have mass testing and not when the people already show sign of
infection of virus. Due to this, the virus spread easily even if the people have followed protocols like
distancing and wearing mask and face shield. We should have mass testing from the start so to know early
who have the virus and be able to separate them from those that have been confirmed not infected. It may
be seen like a discrimination to those that have the virus, but it must be done as it concerns national
security and the health safety of the citizen of the country. Of course, discrimination to those that have the
virus must be not allowed, instead we or the government must help them immediately.

The Philippines is known to have supply many countries of health workers like nurses, med-tech,
doctors, or any related health job, but in the time of the pandemic our country suffers the lack of health
workers especially to the one that test covid-19. Because of this the test results came late, and the virus
spread fast and too late to response when confirmed. Our country, the government and private hospitals
and testing facilities for viruses should have or be able to have the test came faster. Just like what the
DOH spokesperson have that that the country has enough resources like testing materials for viruses but
still the test results came out late as there is not enough health workers to process those tests. This is
because many of our health workers especially those with experiences choose to work on another country
where the salaries of health workers are much higher than ours, this resulted on lack of health staff to
properly respond to the pandemic. Many of those that have stayed in our country are scared to be infected
but their salaries are not worth of the risk.

Our country should have fared better if the government have made decisions decisively and
prepared for such pandemic, the country should have done a mass testing immediately from the start of
pandemic even if the patients are showing or not showing signs of infection so to separate the infected
faster as we have the resources needed just like what the DOH spokesperson have said. Are heath workers
should have their salaries also increased whether in public or private hospitals where the government can
subsidies the private hospitals for the increase of salaries on the health workers as our health workers are
leaving the country to work on high paying country. Lastly, the government should really be prepared for
possible next pandemic, maybe start on having a reliable working health system and educate the people
on the importance of health.
