QUIZ 3 GED117

Oedipus rex is one of the most famous and well-refined works of Sophocles due to its outstanding
writing of the story, the progressions, plots, and twist, and the cultural involvement of the story is what
also made it famous that got the attention of the readers. Moreover, based on how the majority of the
readers view Oedipus, Oedipus is featured as a tragic hero who have fallen due to his actions which the
Greek gods like apollo have prophesized. The story has shown many tragic scenes in the stories and
different ethics that are related to the people’s beliefs about the Greek gods and the first concept of
that is the term called prophecy where people in Greece believe that the fate of one’s person has
already been written before they were even born. An example of that is when one of the characters told
Jocasta and King Laius that their son will kill his father and marry his own mother the moment when that
child was born and that is Oedipus. This shows many different historical and cultural events that
happened in the story.

Furthermore, based on my analysis of the story of Oedipus Rex the one Literary criticism or approach
that I think is necessary for the story is Historical criticism. Why? Because of the way we can look at it we
can also look on how it was written and what is the message of the story. However, I used a historical
approach because I didn’t just solely base on how Sophocles wrote his story but I also based on the
timeline era of the story of his works and when those significant events happen and when was the book
was written back on 420BC. The second literary criticism that was used was the psychological criticism or
approach because I think we can also analyze the message behind those events that happened in the
story or the psychological state of a character. Because based on the story when Oedipus has reached
the truth about his origin and the fulfillment of the prophecy he had a psychological breakdown that
causes him to stab his own eyes after finding out that her wife which is basically her mother Jocasta
killed herself.

The last literary approach that I think we can use mimetic criticism. Because we can also analyze the
meaning of wording, images, and texts of the story and the concept of the memetic approach is to
interpret texts that are written in one’s work. An example of that is the image that is shown where
Oedipus defeated the sphinx by answering her question correctly and saved the city of Thebes which
symbolizes heroism. Another example is when Oedipus trying to avoid the truth which symbolizes
blindness and arrogance.
