LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. Define art as contemporary in line with traditional and modern art
2. Categorize art as visual and performing arts
3. Appreciation of art through creating or performing a particular art

INTRODUCTION

Art is tool for communication. Whether it is a painting or a performance as long as it is a

venue for one to convey or express a thought, emotions, or aspirations; it is considered art. Every
artwork reflects the artist and his/her society. Art offers us the chance to learn and understand artists
and the regions where they belong through their works.
Contemporary art is defined as the art of the “now”. These are the artworks that are
produced in the present. It is difficult to define the actual starting point of contemporary art since
the present is in constant motion, and what we might consider as contemporary art today might not
be true in the future.
Take down notes! Do no forget to make your own copy of the important things you learned
here, and write them down in your CPAR notebook.

ACTIVITY

For us to know what makes art contemporary, we must differentiate art as traditional and
modern. Try to fill up the chart with words that corresponds with the idea of traditional art and
modern art. Choose the words from the box and write your answers in a separate sheet of paper.

CONTEMPORARY ART

Knowing the difference between traditional art and modern art, how can we define art as a
contemporary art? We have said in the introduction that contemporary art is the art of the “now”. It
can be best described as an art that manifests the face of the society TODAY. Art is made with
themes, and thus contemporary art mostly contains social issues and human experiences.
Contemporary art is existential in perspective – the art that exists in every beholder of the art and the
artists as well.
Search the internet and find yourself a more intimate definition of what contemporary art is.
Write your insight about contemporary art.

PART 1: FEED YOUR MIND

Art is one of the earliest and most basic form of communication. This is seen in the prehistoric
visual artworks like the cave drawings and other early artifacts. This is also evident in our folk songs
and rituals, The visual and performing arts are ways for people to express themselves and share their
individual insights to others. Through these arts, they catch other people’s attention, imagination,
and admiration.

Before we continue, how do you express art? What is your definition of art? Share your answer by
writing it in your answer sheet.

VISUAL ARTS is a term used to describe a wide array of artistic disciplines that are
appreciated primarily through sight. Visual arts include the different art forms and disciplines such as
fine arts, decorative arts, and contemporary art forms.

1. FINE ARTS
Fine arts are the artwork we readily associate with art. The term “fine art” was first used to
describe the art forms created primarily for its appearance rather than its practical use. As time
passed, this term was used to include artworks that came about from emerging technology and
artistic innovations.

In your answer sheet, guess the missing letters of the given examples of fine arts.

A. D__W__G B. P__NT_N_ C. SC__P_U_E

D. PR__T E. G R _ _ H _C ART F. CAL__GR_P_Y

G. A_C_I_EC_U_E

2. DECORATIVE ARTS
Decorative arts, also known as decorative craft, are artworks that are both aesthetically
pleasing and functional. While the fine arts are primarily concerned with beauty and aesthetics, the
decorative arts were not only beautiful but are useful as well. From the Renaissance up until the
twentieth century, many artists in the West consider the decorative arts as a lower version of art;
makers of these artworks were not considered as artists but rather as craftsmen. This attitude has
gradually changed, though there are still some who believe in the outdated distinction.

There are a multitude of examples of decorative arts, most common of which are:

A. TEXTILE ART E. EARTHENWARE

B. GLASSWARE F. METAL CRAFT
C. JEWELRY G. INTERIOR DESIGN
D. FURNITURE

In your answer sheet, copy and answer this:

Put a check mark ( ) on the line if the term is an example of decorative arts.

3. CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS

There are new and unusual art forms that could not be easily recognized between the fine
arts and the decorative arts, these belong to the branch of visual arts called contemporary art
forms. Contemporary art forms include recently conceived art styles and techniques that are not
easily categorized with the previously mentioned forms (fine arts and decorative arts). These partially
include:
A. Assemblage E. Digital art
B. Collage F. Land art
C. Installation art G. Conceptual art
D. Performance art
It should be emphasized that there is a difference between contemporary art forms and
contemporary art.
Contemporary art is defined as all art works that produced in our present lifetime. These
artworks can be expressed using traditional art forms such as paintings, sculptures, pottery, etc. or
can be produced using new art techniques such as installation, assemblage, etc.
There are numerous and still-emerging forms of contemporary arts. The list is continually
expanding with new art forms being invented due to the development of technology.

In a bond paper, create a short/brief report or research on a contemporary art form. It may
be an art form not mentioned in this lesson. The report should include the art form’s characteristics,
history proponent artist/s, and a picture (1) of an example artwork of the form.

PART 2: FEED YOUR MIND

PERFORMING ARTS
When artists use their voices and/or their body movements to communicate artistic
expression, this is an example of performing arts. Performing arts come in many kinds, but all are
meant to be enacted in front of a live audience.
Performing arts are often categorized into three types: music, dance, and theatre.

1. MUSIC
Music is a universal form of art. It is defined as the manipulation of sound and silence. It
blends the different elements such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, and texture to create sound.
It is performed by utilizing different instruments, vocal techniques, and styles. It can be performed
live or recorded and can be prepared in advance or improvised.
Music comes in a variety of music genres, with each genre having its subcategory. Here are
some of the most common music genres:

SMALL INSIGHT

CONTEMPORARY ART in the Philippines

The Philippines is home to many contemporary arts. Its art is as rich and as diverse as its
culture. It would be difficult to categorize all the different art forms found in the archipelago due to
its sheer number and variety.
Artists, including contemporary artists, are influenced by many factors such as RELIGION,
EDUCATION, and ENVIRONMENT. The way they were brought up and the culture they were raised in
would indisputably have an effect whether consciously or not, in their art.
Artists would often look at their surroundings for inspiration for their art. Their art would reflect
the traits of their city and showcase the cultural traits of their province. The celebrations in their town
or the history of their city would, in one way or another, mold their psyche and technique.
A few decades ago, the regional differences in art were quite distinct, and it was easy to
identify a cultural product from one region to another. These regional differences could readily be
seen in our decorative arts and crafts (fabric, jewelry, pottery, etc.), our music, dance, and
indigenous theater.
At present, these regional distinctions in the arts are not as apparent. With the help of the
Internet, Filipino artists are more connected with each other. They share tips, techniques, and
processes with others through video and tutorials. Artists exhibit their works and create groups and
communities through social media accounts to communicate their advocacies. This interconnection
has resulted in artists inspiring each other from all over the archipelago. This has also resulted in an
integrative art that everyone can relate to.

PART 1: FEED YOUR MIND

CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS

Contemporary visual arts in the Philippines are classified into three: Fine arts, decorative arts,
and contemporary art forms.
Fine arts – type of visual art that are most frequently associated with arts such as paintings,
sculptures, and drawings.
Decorative arts – category of visual arts that pertains to artworks that are not just
aesthetically pleasing but functional as well, examples include pottery, furniture, metal crafts, etc.
Contemporary art forms – artworks that are result of the use of new techniques, technology
and mediums. This art form cannot be easily categorized between fine arts and the decorative arts
11

and hence results in different classification all together. Common examples include installation art,
digital art, virtual reality, etc.

FINE ARTS
Let us start with Fine arts. See reference in our Facebook group, check the album entitled
“CPAR Fine arts and Sculpture” and review each image and copy them in your CPAR notebook.
After viewing the group album, answer the following questions and write your answer in a separate
sheet of paper:

1. What are the two classification of fine arts?

2. What are the themes under the painting category? Define each.
3. What can you say about these themes? Tell us what makes these themes congruent
to the contemporary Philippine art.
4. What do you think is the reason why sculpture is under the fine arts category?
5. How do you see the significance of sculpture in contemporary Philippine art?

DECORATIVE ARTS AND CRAFTS

The decorative arts and crafts of the contemporary times stem from the traditional
indigenous crafts found throughout the country. Some of you might wonder why these traditional
and indigenous products and process are included in a discussion about contemporary art. Many
artists of today, uses their cultural artistic heritage, and decorative arts processes in their
contemporary artistic expression. Hence it is important to discuss these to be aware of these types of
traditional art.
See facebook group album entitled “CPAR decorative art” for your reference.

Upon checking the “CPAR decorative art”, in your answer sheer, create this table and fill up
the information needed for each cell.

CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS

Many contemporary art forms cannot be easily classified and categorized following the
traditional definitions. Some contemporary art forms blur the distinction between the disciplines and
genres. Some are products of new technological advancements and cannot be categorized using
the outdated definitions, hence the need to classify them under their own heading as contemporary
art forms.

CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS

Filipino is a race that is bursting with talents. Not only do we excel in the visual arts, we are
also considered to be a source of world class performers. In diverse field of the performing arts,
whether in Music, Dance, or Theater, there will always be Filipinos that attest to our country’s artistic
giftedness.
MUSIC
Filipinos love to sing. No celebration is complete without a karaoke or videoke machine.
Contemporary Music in the Philippines is a product of our indigenous traditions and the colonial
influences. Though the country is geographically located in the East, our music is heavily influenced
by the West. This is no doubt due to being under centuries of Spanish rule and almost half a century
under American control.
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the types of indigenous music found in the country were
instrumental and vocal. Musical sounds were created by various instruments such as flutes, shell
trumpets, drums, and gongs. Vocals were performed by individuals or as a group. The singing styles
differ from one ethnic group to another. Though many types and examples of indigenous music
have been lost, there are still a number of local music that exist due to the preservation efforts of
many artists and of the government.
During the Spanish colonization, parallel with the visual arts, the Spaniards promulgated
religious music. The different religious orders believed in the power of music to convert the natives
that is why the friars received musical training in Spain before travelling to the country. These friars in
turn taught the Filipinos music whose pedagogy were based on the Western musical traditions. This
resulted in music that is a combination of both indigenous and western aesthetics. Musical forms that
were born from this period were religious hymns and chants, orchestras, bands, and ensembles such
as the rondalla. Other than the various stringed instruments of the rondalla, favored musical
instruments in homes during the Spanish colonial times were the piano and the harp. Young ladies
were often asked to play these instruments to entertain guests. Musical entertainment was also
enjoyed during the various stage plays, dances, and operas.
The Americans through the public-school system taught children simple hymns and Filipino
songs rendered in a western style or beat. Schools also became a venue to study other musical
instruments such as the cello, violin, etc. These schools produced musicians that would later become
leading figures in the development of Filipino contemporary music such as Nicanor Abelardo, Felipe
Padilla de Leon, and Francisco Santiago. Unsurprisingly, music that were made during this time are
mostly imitation and assimilation of mainstream western music, adopting its style and melodic
structure.
The mid-twentieth century Filipino music, though still influenced by foreign music, eventually
developed a more ‘Filipinized’ flavor using vernacular in lyrics and creation of wholly original
14

compositions. This technique of combining western musical form with Filipino sensibilities is the most
popular and common style employed by many contemporary music artists.

CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS

You have learned and distinguished the differences between the traditional arts and
contemporary arts. According to Dedal (2017), traditional arts is learned from family or community
members passed among generations while contemporary arts can be found anywhere, such as
school, streets and the like. It is diverse and technology-oriented and with social concerns pertinent
to the person or the world.
To further study its differences, read stated on the table below.

Cinema

Cinema is the well-known form of arts which

is also a performance and the action can be seen on screen
While it started early 1900s cinema as it spread in the regions
gained acceptance from the people.

The Advent of Cinema in the Philippines

During the last decade of the 19th century, in 1896, a Spaniard by the name of Pertierra,
prepared to launch his first movie show in Manila at Christmas Time. The venue was to be at Salon de
Pertierra, which he established nine months earlier as the Phonograph Parlor on the ground floor of
the Casino Espanol at Calle Perez, off the Escolta. But for some reasons still unknown to this writing,
Pertierra failed to make his presentation despite several published announcements to this effect. The
show kept being postponed until the New Year.

Finally, on January 1, 1897, the first four movies namely, Un Homme Au Chapeau (Man with a
Hat), Une scene de danse Japonaise (Scene from a Japanese Dance), Les Boxers (The Boxers),
and La Place de L’ Opera(The Place L’ Opera), were shown via 60mm Gaumont Chrono-
photograph projector at the Salon de Pertierra at no. 12 Escolta.

Other countries, such as France, England, and Germany have their claims to the introduction of
publicly projected motion picture but the corresponding credit should have been given to Mr.
Pertierra and the centennial anniversary of the first movie shown in the Philippines should have been
commemorated on January 1, 1997 (https://ncca.gov.ph/about-ncca-

Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan

In April 1992, the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Treasures Award was
institutionalized through Republic Act No. 7355. Tasked with the administration and implementation
of the Award is the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the highest policy-making and
coordinating body for culture and the arts of the State. The NCCA, through the Gawad sa
Manlilikha ng Bayan Executive Council, conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the
land, adopts a program that will ensure the transfer of their skills to others, and undertakes measures
to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill pride among our people about the genius of the
Manlilikha ng Bayan.

First awarded in 1993 to three outstanding artists in music and poetry, the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng
Bayan has its roots in the 1988 National Folk Artists Award organized by the Rotary Club of Makati-
Ayala. As a group, these folk and traditional artists reflect the diverse heritage and cultural traditions
that transcend their beginnings to become part of our national character. As Filipinos, they bring
age-old customs, crafts and ways of living to the attention and appreciation of Filipino life. They
provide us with a vision of ourselves and of our nation, a vision we might be able to realize someday,
once we are given the opportunity to be true to ourselves as these artists have remained truthful to
their art.

As envisioned under R.A. 7355, “Manlilikha ng Bayan” shall mean a citizen engaged in any traditional
art uniquely Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached such a high level of technical and artistic
excellence and have been passed on to and widely practiced by the present generation in his/her
community with the same degree of technical and artistic competence.

HOW DOES ONE BECOME A MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN?

To become a Manlilikha ng Bayan, an individual or group candidate must:

1.
a. Possess a mastery of tools and materials needed for the traditional, folk art and be a
maker of works of extraordinary technical quality;
b. Have consistently produced works of superior quality over significant period;
c. Have engaged in a traditional and folk art which has been in existence and
documented for at least fifty (50) years;
d. Command respect and inspire admiration of the country with his character and
integrity;
e. Must have transferred and/or willing to transfer to other members of the community
the skills in the traditional and folk arts for which the community has become
29

nationally known.

QUARTER 1 MELC 5 - Evaluates Contemporary Art Forms Based on the Elements and
Principles

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. Gain knowledge in basic elements and principles of art;
2. Students be able to evaluate art; and
3. Appreciation of art through creating or performing a particular art.

INTRODUCTION

The elements and principles of art and design are the foundation of the language we use to
talk about art. The elements of art are the visual tools that the artist uses to create a composition.
These are line, shape, color, texture, and space.

The principles of art represent how the artist uses the elements of art to create an effect and
to help convey the artist's intent. The principles of art and design are balance, contrast, emphasis,
movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/variety. The use of these principles can help determine
whether a painting is successful, and whether or not the painting is finished.

READINGS FROM THE MODULE

Traditional way of looking at art, namely the visual arts, suggests that there are five basic elements
of an art work – line, shape, color, texture and space. You might find form singled out as a separate
category, defined as a three-dimensional alternative to shape.

Saying that the line is the most essential of all art elements
somehow comes naturally. After all, it is usually the first and the most
pristine outcome of our contact with writing tools, pens, pencils,
crayons, etc, and typically the first thing we choose to use in order to
32

represent the reality around us.

ELEMENTS OF ART - SHAPE

The Way We See Different Shapes

A shape is two dimensional, it has height and width but has no depth. We
can easily identify the shape of most objects without having extra visual
information.

Space in Art
Space is often illusively recreated in a painting or a drawing, realistically or
in a distorted manner. Space in Art refers to the three-dimensionality of
sculpture and architecture. It also refers to the sense of depth in a two
dimensional artwork.

Three dimensional
space (real)
Two dimensional
space (illusion)

COLOUR

Two qualities that strike us in everyday life and serve as an

inexhaustible source of inspiration are color and texture, both of
which have been studied, both in arts and science, for centuries.
Color is the light reflected off objects, perceived in different hues
depending on the wavelength.

Texture and the Materiality of an Artwork

Texture is the quality of a surface, which is a sensation
perceivable by the skin rather than the eyes.

The Principles of Design

The principles of art represent how the artist uses the elements of art to create an effect and to help
convey the artist's intent. The principles of art and design are balance, contrast, emphasis,
movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/variety. The use of these principles can help determine
whether a painting is successful, and whether or not the painting is finished.

Balance refers to the visual weight of the elements of the composition.

It is a sense that the painting feels stable and "feels right." Imbalance
causes a feeling of discomfort in the viewer.

Contrast is a principle that is used is different ways in Art. The purpose of contrast is to create a
statement, to entice the viewer and to create attention. Negative/Positive space is an example of
contrast.
Contrast is achieved through

• Materials
• line
• Shape, form and size
• Value
• Colour
• Textures
• Time and style
• ideas

Emphasis is when the artist creates an area of the composition that is visually dominant and
commands the viewer's attention. This is often achieved by contrast.

Movement is the result of using the Rhythm is created by movement implied

elements of art such that they move the through the repetition of elements of art
viewer's eye around and within the in a non-uniform but organized way. It is
image. A sense of movement can be related to rhythm in music. Unlike pattern,
created by diagonal or curvy lines, either which demands consistency, rhythm relies
real or implied, by edges, by the illusion of on variety.
space, by repetition, by energetic mark-
making.

Pattern is the uniform repetition of any of the elements of art or any combination thereof. Anything
can be turned into a pattern through repetition. Some classic patterns are spirals, grids, weaves. A
popular drawing practice is Zentangles, in which an abstract or representational outline is divided
into different areas, each of which contains a unique pattern.

Unity/Variety You want your painting to feel unified such that all the elements fit together
comfortably. Too much unity creates monotony, too much variety creates chaos. You need both.
Ideally, you want areas of interest in your composition along with places for your eye to rest.

government of the Philippines, has categorized Filipino arts into traditional and non-traditional. Each
category are split into various arts, which in turn have sub-categories of their own.

weaving, carving, folk performing arts, folk (oral) literature, folk graphic and plastic arts, ornament,

the tradition of the past and experiment with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the
nature of materials and functions of art.

Since the early 20th century, some artists have turned away from realistic representation and
the depiction of the human figure, and have moved increasingly towards abstraction. In New York
City after World War II, the art world coined the term “abstract expressionism” to characterize an art
movement that was neither completely abstract, nor expressionistic.

Contemporary artists working within the postmodern movement reject the concept of
mainstream art and embrace the notion of “artistic pluralism,” the acceptance of a variety of
artistic intentions and styles. Whether influenced by or grounded in performance art, pop art,
Minimalism, conceptual art, or video, contemporary artists pull from an infinite variety of materials,
sources, and styles to create art.

READINGS FROM THE MODULE

The GAMABA Awardee

In 1993, Ginaw Bilog received the ‘Manlilikha ng Bayan’ Award by

the GAMABA or the National Living Treasure Awards. The term ‘Manlilikha
ng Bayan’ refers to a (Filipino) citizen or group of citizens engaged in any
traditional art uniquely Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached such a
high level of technical and artistic excellence.
The National Living Treasures Award (Gawad sa Manlilikha ng
Bayan) was institutionalized in 1992 through Republic Act No. 7355.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts, which is the highest
policy-making and coordinating body of the Philippines for culture and the arts, was tasked with the
implementation.[2] This is in line with UNESCO's criteria of Living National
Treasures.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Living_Treasures_Award_(Philippines))
When Bilog received his award in 1993, he was dressed in typical Mangyan garb of loincloth
and a blue type of jacket, wearing as well an easy smile. This same image of him was seen at
Luneta by students and other visitors at the Dayaw: Philippine Cultural Communities Arts Festival held
at Rizal Park, Manila from December 3 to 9 in 2001. He was among the estimated 400 traditional
artists, craftsmen, scholars, and cultural practitioners from 38 cultural communities, including the
Aeta, Aklanon, Bagobo, Bicolano, Cebuano, Gaddang, Ilocano, Ivatan, Maguindanao, Tagalog,
T’boli, and the Yakan brought together for the festival, freely interacting with visitors, showing them
how engraving the “ambahan” onto the skin of bamboos was done.
On June 3, 2003, Ginaw died at the age of 50 because of a lingering illness. Before he died,
he had established the School of Living Traditions (SLT). An SLT is one where a living master/culture
bearer or culture specialist, in this case, Bilog, imparts to a group of young people (from the same
ethno-linguistic community) the skills and techniques of doing a traditional art or craft. The
establishment of the SLT is in response to the UNESCO declaration that there should be two
approaches to the preservation of cultural heritage: one is to record it in a tangible form and
conserve it in archives; the other is to preserve it in a living form by ensuring its transmission to the
next generations. The SLT addresses the second approach.
The Filipinos are grateful to the Hanunoo Mangyan for having preserved a distinctive heritage
form our ancient civilization that colonial rule had nearly succeeded in destroying. The nation is
justifiably proud of Ginaw Bilog for vigorously promoting the elegantly poetic art of the
surat Mangyan and the ambahan.
