1 Scope

This standard is intended to simplify drawings. It specifies general tolerances on linear and angular
dimensions, and on coaxiality and symmetry with four tolerance classes as follows: f (fine), m (medium),
g (coarse) and sg (very coarse). By selecting a specific tolerance class, the customary workshop accuracy is
taken into consideration.

General tolerances as specified in this standard are used for cold or hot stampings made from flat steel
products, and apply wherever reference is made to this standard in drawings or other relevant documents
(e.g. delivery conditions).

General tolerances for parts made by fine blanking (see VDI 2906 Part 5) are not covered by this standard.

If, as an exception, this standard is also applied to parts made from semi-finished products other than flat
products, or from materials other than steel, this shall be agreed separately.

This standard is to be applied in conjunction with DIN 6932 on design rules for stamped steel parts.

Technical delivery conditions for stampings are specified in DIN 6930-1.

Guidelines for general tolerances indicated on existing drawings are given in Clause 5.

3 General tolerances

3.1 General

The general tolerances specified in this standard take account of the particular aspects of stamping practice,
including allowances for die wear. All dimensions (thicknesses and angles) refer to the nominal size and not to the
real, subject-to-tolerances dimensions. In the case of blanked stampings, the tolerances apply to the cut band (see
Figure 1).

Imprimé pour METASEVAL DIN 6930.2 Octobre 2011

DIN 6930-2:2011-10

If smaller tolerances are required or larger tolerances are permitted and are more economical, these shall be
indicated separately.

Key
1 Actual size: Length or diameter 5 Break band
2 Height of cut surface 6 Depth of burr
3 Drawn-in band 7 Thickness of workpiece
4 Cut band

Figure 1 — Determining actual size (notation)

The position and size of the drawn-in band, break band and burr may affect the performance of the stamping.
In such cases, an agreement shall be reached between the manufacturer and the purchaser, details of which
are to be entered in the drawing. In the case of stampings produced by nibbling (see DIN 8588) the actual size
is the dimension measured over the peaks of the waved surface (see Figure 2).

Key
1 Actual size

Figure 2 — Determining the actual size of stampings produced by nibbling (notation)

The actual size of a stamping may possibly be influenced by the thickness tolerance of the flat product used.
The fact that this thickness may alter during bending or deep drawing shall also be taken into consideration.

3.2 General tolerances for flat stampings

3.2.1 General

Flat stampings shall only be made from flat products by cutting (using a shearing or blanking tool). Cutting
methods are defined in DIN 8588.

3.2.2 General tolerances for linear dimensions of flat stampings

The tolerances given in Table 1 apply to all linear dimensions including the diameters of flat stampings, except
for the radii of curvature, which are specified in 3.2.3. In cases where dimensions are affected by flatness, the
measuring methods and measuring points for flatness shall be subject to agreement between the
manufacturer and the user.

3.2.4 General tolerances for angular dimensions of flat stampings

General tolerances for angular dimensions of flat stampings apply irrespective of the actual linear dimensions,
i.e. the angular deviations are permitted for workpieces with either maximum or minimum material sizes. The
tolerances do not affect tolerances of form of the legs or faces enclosing an angle. Tolerances are specified in
Table 3.

3.2.5 General tolerances on coaxiality and symmetry of flat stampings

3.2.5.1 General

DIN EN ISO 1101 gives explanations of the terms "coaxiality tolerance" and "symmetry tolerance" and specifies
the corresponding indications on drawings.

3.2.5.2 Coaxiality

The coaxiality tolerance applies to the nominal size of the largest of the form elements under consideration.
Thus the coaxiality tolerance is given by the difference between the upper and lower tolerances specified in
Table 1 for the selected class and given product thickness.

EXAMPLE Concentric arrangement of outer and inner contours of a pierced disc (see Figure 3).

Table 1.

3.2.5.3 Symmetry

The symmetry tolerance applies to the nominal size of the largest of the form elements under consideration.
Thus the symmetry tolerance is given by the difference between the upper and lower tolerances specified in
Table 1 for the selected class and given product thickness.

For a product thickness of 1 mm and a class g tolerance, the following symmetry tolerances are given in
Table 1:

Symmetry tolerance for hole axis in the longitudinal direction: 1,2 mm

Symmetry tolerance for hole axis and mid-plane of notches in the transverse direction: 0,8 mm

3.3 General tolerances for stampings made by forming

3.3.1 General

Stampings produced by forming are understood to be those which have undergone at least one forming
operation (e.g. bending, deep drawing) and which are therefore not flat. In cases where dimensions are
affected by flatness, the measuring methods and measuring points for flatness shall be subject to agreement
between the manufacturer and the user. As a rule, stampings produced by forming also exhibit features
produced by cutting.

NOTE Stampings produced by forming may also feature flat (cut) form elements whose dimensional tolerances are
not affected by the forming operation, e.g. because they are located at a sufficient distance from the formed workpiece or
are manufactured after the forming operation. However, as it is not always possible for the designer to determine in
advance when manufacturing will produce such results, such cases have not been dealt with here; instead, reference is to
be made to the tolerances for flat stampings.

In cases where tolerances for particular form elements on stampings produced by forming are too large for the
required function, suitable tolerances shall be specified individually. This may also apply to dimensions across
elements manufactured by different processes (i.e. tolerances between an element produced by bending and
one produced by cutting).

3.3.2 General tolerances for linear dimensions of stampings manufactured by forming

The tolerances specified in Table 4 apply to all linear dimensions, including the diameters of stampings
manufactured by forming, except for the radii of curvature, which are specified separately. The nominal sizes to
be considered may also have been produced either by cutting or a forming operation (see also Note to 3.3.1).

3.3.4 General tolerances for angular dimensions of stampings manufactured by forming

General tolerances for angular dimensions of stampings manufactured by forming apply irrespective of the
actual linear dimensions, i.e. the angular deviations are permitted for workpieces with either maximum or
minimum material sizes. The tolerances do not affect tolerances of form of the legs or faces enclosing an angle.

For angles produced by bending, the tolerances specified in DIN 6935 for cold bent angles apply for all
tolerance classes.

NOTE Because the present standard also covers hot formed stampings, the tolerances for angular dimensions
specified in DIN 6935 also apply to such stampings.

3.3.5 General tolerances on coaxiality and symmetry of stampings manufactured by forming

The coaxiality and symmetry tolerances apply to the nominal size of the largest of the form elements under
consideration. Thus the coaxiality or symmetry tolerance is given by the difference between the upper and
lower tolerances specified in Table 4 for the selected class and given product thickness.

4 Indication on drawings

Where general tolerances as specified in this standard apply, the following indication shall be made on
drawings in the box provided for this purposes, e.g. when a class m "medium" tolerance is specified:

5 General tolerances on existing drawings

General tolerances as in this standard apply to new drawings. It is recommended that existing drawings be
amended by substituting previous tolerance indications by ones in accordance with this standard. If this is not
possible, and if the following statement is retained (which applied prior to 1983)

"Tolerance as in DIN 6930"

then the tolerances specified in the previous editions of DIN 6930-2, DIN 6930-3 and DIN 6930-4 apply.

Figure 6 — Straightness of strip

The straightness tolerances are based on a minimum ratio of strip width b to product thickness s of
b : s = 25 : 1 (see also Figure 6). For sections bent from strip, the tolerance n given in Table 6 applies for each
longitudinal axis of the section.

6.3 Twisting of strip and sections

The twisting (ail) of strip cut by shears and sections bent from strip shall not exceed 0,5° per 1 000 mm length
(see Figure 7).

For strip, this requirement is based on a minimum ratio of strip width b to product thickness s of b:s= 25 : 1.
